I found California Turf and Landscape through Angie's List and was honestly shocked by their estimate. They quoted us $6,669 for a very small landscaping job around our pool. Our backyard is minimal, and there was very little actual work to be done. A huge portion of that quote--over $5,000--was for labor, which they claimed could be completed in half a day. The really high price didn't sit right with me, so I did my homework. I went directly to the sources for the materials (rock, sod, mulch), and the total cost came to just $717. California Turf and Landscape marked those materials up dramatically. I also got a second opinion from another licensed professional, who quoted us $1,950 total and flat-out said the original quote was wildly inflated. This $1950 included installing sprinklers and a cement walkway!! I'm extremely glad I shopped around, because this felt like a blatant attempt to overcharge--especially on labor--for a straightforward, small-scale job. If you're a millionaire and you don't care what the cost is and willing to pay it, then that's one thing. But if you're a homeowner on a budget, I strongly recommend getting multiple quotes before even considering this company. If money is no object to you, fine. But if you care about fair pricing and transparency, look elsewhere. read more

I chose California Turf & Landscaping after requesting quotes from three local landscaping firms. They were very responsive during the bidding process. They were able to begin work within a month of signing the contract. Their team of landscapers worked steadily to transform my backyard. They added new drip irrigation and a lawn alternative called Kurapia which looks like clover when blooming and requires very little water here in Fresno. We used Cal Turf for regular landscaping services and their quality and service was terrible at best. They constantly and carelessly damaged our sprinklers and irrigation systems and refused to repair them afterward. Even after paying for them to get repaired they would break them again, or fix them incorrectly. Our contract required Cal Turf to provide annual seeding and fertilizing which they never provided. I also caught their meth-junkie foreman (Hector) dumpster diving for valuables on the job. (It's no wonder the edges of our lawns never looked sharp and explains why stuff went missing from around here.) I sent an email and made a call to the owner sharing our concerns, but there was never a response or return call. We were eager not renew and ended our contract after a year. We felt liberated from Cal Turf's abuse when we found another more trusting landscaping company. Stay away from Cal Turf. read more

Cal Turf added concrete, root barriers and turf to our backyard and we are very happy with the entire process and end result. Decomposed Granite installation was not done properly. In speaking with other contractor's it wasn't layered deep enough. Soil can be found right under the top layer. Business owner was responsive, but did not rectify the situation to my standards. read more

Tony came out and had some great ideas for what we could do with our backyard. He didn't hesitate to share, and he didn't charge a design-fee like some landscapers do. We discussed the ideas back and forth, and he drew up a quote that we accepted. The hardest part was waiting until we came up in the queue to get the work started. Gilbert is then the go-to guy who organizes all the moving pieces. He took the time to discuss specifics with us to make sure we got exactly what we were hoping for. At each step he would come out, inspect the work, and check in. After our initial re-grading of the yard was done, we unfortunately discovered that the drainage put in by the builder nearly 30 years ago was woefully inadequate. Gilbert quickly drew up a new plan to fix the drainage and drafted a second estimate so that work could continue right away. Gilbert helped us pick out the flagstone and artificial grass that we wanted. He also made sure that all the "little things" we hadn't considered were taken care of. His crew went the extra mile with some finishing touches that weren't even included in the estimate, just to make sure we were happy and content with the final product. He took all the measurements etc. He promised to get me a quote in a week time, but never followed it through. I contacted him again, he promised to get it in another week. Very disappointed with Jeff and his California Turf and Landscaping. In April of 2017 I received a bid for landscaping for $1920.40 from Jeff's company. Unfortunately unseen circumstances came up and couldn't do it at that time. So I contacted him again in August of 2019 and few days later received a bid of $4,420.42 for the same landscaping. We had this company come for an estimate last fall after moving to Madera. Mitch was very approachable and sent us an estimate. We spent $9,000.00 to redo our small backyard. They planted a hedge, built a raised vegetable bed, took out some poles, and placed bark with plants, and a flag stone pathway. Unfortunately there were some significant concerns that became evident. Flagstones cracked. Supposed compact sand wash away. We have tried since December to get them to come and make it right. Update- the repairs were made in 6/19 and we were very pleased. Just completed artificial turf and concrete install in my front yard. NOT MUCH WENT RIGHT. My yard was demo'd before I got HOA approval. Not once was i given an appt time for any work, just showed up on my doorstep at 7 am. My 7 fully mature, manicured boxwoods were taken out in error, even though they were part of the blueprint. "Compensated" with 7 immature 5-Gallon boxwoods. Artificial turf was melted 3 times before they figured out the problem, which I was originally blamed for. The final install piece now does not match up with the rest of the turf. The blueprint does not match the install. The concrete was installed higher than the bottom of my gate, so I will have to have my entire fence raised to put the concrete through when I redo my back yard. No answer was give about this. Not disgruntled, just very disappointed. I trusted the professionals to do a job that I have no knowledge of, and i was let down. I am now looking at other companies to fix the mistakes. read more

Mitch worked with my budget and was extremely flexible to new ideas. His expertise helped shape my vision for this new backyard. The results were nothing less then amazing! My backyard is gorgeous and the work was completed beyond my expectations. The scheduling between Mitch and Gilbert was lacking and I had to intervene in order to insure my project contained all the aspects I arranged during the concept stage.
