We waited 40 minutes for this pizza...
Aileen B.

We were in a bit of a hurry and asked about how long we'd have to wait from ordering to getting a pizza and the host said 15-20 minutes, so we decided to stay. Upon entry you'll notice people wearing winter coats while eating in the dining room--it's that cold. We waited for the waitress to come to our table for about ten minutes and ordered our pizza right then, telling her we were in a bit of a hurry. While we waited 40 minutes for our burnt pizza, we noticed workers standing around eating pizza over the pizzas that were being cut for customers, with one of them wiping his mouth repeatedly and never washing his hands. There was a family simply waiting to pay their bill for at least twenty minutes and two different people from their table went up to ask for it about 5-10 minutes apart. There was a line of people waiting at the carryout window, looking bored out of their skulls because they'd been there so long. When we asked to talk to the manager when we saw our burnt pizza, our waitress said he was too busy to come over because he's the one making the pizzas. I told her he needed to come over anyway. My husband ended up taking the pizza up to where he was, and they came back to the table together. The manager apologized and explained that he'd had to send a cook home for reasons he couldn't share, and was very sorry for the wait and the condition of the pizza after the wait. He was genuine and we felt bad for him because he was visibly stressed. He offered to remake the pizza, but we didn't have the time. He did not charge us for the pizza. He said he'd talk to his staff about eating in the kitchen in sight of customers. Our waitress only came to our table three times in an hour: to take the order, deliver the pizza, and refill water once, and had not been trained on how to interact with customers. With training and a dedicated staff, this location can return to it's heyday via word of mouth, but they have a few things to fix first.

Dynamit shrimp and lemonade
Kim K.

At edge of mall, decent food. Fast and attentive service by Brendan. The dynamite shrimp appetizer makes a nice meal for one person. The mini butter cakes were quite fresh and good: an Oporto try three of four possible flavors. The bacon and maple was actually tasty: remind a pancake breakfast with a side of bacon. Prices a bit much for what you get: but this I'd expected nowadays.

I added a long- standing favorite. Chicken piccata. The staff is always amazing, as well. Shout out to: Carlos, Brianna and Gloria, but the whole team Is amazing.

We celebrated our 10 yo daughter at CPK in Briarwood. She and her friends had a blast! They got to make their own pizzas, got a sneak peak at the back of the house (kitchen tour). It was def a cool experience for the kiddos. All the staff were lovely, engaging with the kids during the kitchen tour. Our host, Phil, was amazing, very patient, attentive, and made sure we got everything we needed. He guided our kiddos through the pizza-making process till the end. Surprisingly, not many people know that CPK offers a birthday party package full of fun! Parents of my tiny guests were amazed- if you're looking for a stress free birthday party, let CPK take care of it. I highly recommend this experience.

Pizza with very little basil if any
Peter H.

I ordered a pepperoni and basil pizza from California Pizza Kitchen in Ann Arbor using GrubHub. Every time I order a pizza using GrubHub they put a ton of each topping all except for basil (see attached photo). When I dine in I don't have this issue ever. I called to complain and I mentioned to the manger that they skimp on the basil and they really need to add more. They do not offer basil as a standalone topping. So If I want pepperoni and basil, I have to order a pepperoni, mushroom, sausage basil pizza and select to remove the mushroom and sausage. I said to the manager, I'm deleting two toppings. I'd think they could add a little more basil than 5 tiny pieces, each the size of my pinky fingernail. He said it doesn't work that way. Well, then how does it work? I deserve more basil than that. I don't understand why they are rationing basil so tightly. I've ordered from them dozens of times and every time the pizza comes looking like the photo. It's incredibly annoying and the prices are higher on GrubHub. The manager said I can call when I place an order and and ask them to add more basil. I shouldn't have to do that. Each topping should come with some sort of minimum standard rather than all other toppings but basil being plentiful. I feel cheated and taken advantage of.

Sausage-Pepperoni-Mushroom on cauliflower crust
Paul W.

Been years since I went to a CPK, and things have obviously changed. Power Bowls. Cauliflower crust pizza. Crunchy Thai chicken salad. CPK has always had some adventurous combos, but they're clearly making an effort to stay abreast of culinary/dietary trends, and in my experience so far, the results are delicious. Being that I've been forced in to the low-carbing set, we got a cauliflower crust sausage-mushroom-pepperoni pizza. I wasn't really sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised to see the crust resembled...a real pizza crust, crunchy, with texture very similar to that of a wheat crust. The flavor was slightly different, and I'm sure that texture resulted from the addition of starches of some kind, so I doubt it's especially low-carb, but once I had a bite I wasn't going to quibble about that. The pizza wasn't a meat and cheese bomb. Toppings were spare, but very flavorful. The Italian sausage in particular was excellent, savory and rich but not greasy. Did not miss the armor plating of mozzarella you get on a lot of chain pies. We split a large Caesar salad on the side, which I'd say was just adequate. Lettuce was a little limp, dressing wasn't standout. I'd opt for a different salad next time. But, more likely when we return, we'll check out the power bowls. Service was very good. We were seated quickly, and the food came in less than ten minutes. I'll admit I tend to steer away from chain restaurants; perhaps it's the Ann Arborite in me. But I will occasionally break form for this place.

When I was a freshman in college in Chicago 17 years ago, my idea of haute cuisine was the California Pizza Kitchen near the Magnificent Mile. I took everyone who visited me there for dinner. Looking back it's pretty funny given how many delicious non-chain eateries there are in Chicago but at 18, new to the city, and pre-Yelp I didn't have a very good handle on these things. These days I don't always seek out CPK but when I do I don't mind it. I'm a big fan of what I call "the mall date" (it's exactly as it sounds) and often that entails a bite at CPK or PF Chang's as part of it. This particular location at Briarwood is a good one compared to the rest of the locations in the chain. It's clean, food is prepared as expected (and relatively tasty), service is fine, and it's usually pretty easy to find a table. The menu itself is varied and it's easy to find something for meat eaters, vegetarians, and picky kids too (making it very family friendly). The lunch menu is also pretty nice in that you can combine pizza, salads or soups in any combination for a nice variety. I recently had the baked potato soup and the pepperoni pizza and it was the perfect cozy lunch on a cold fall day. It's not my go-to choice in town but if I'm in the mall it's definitely one of the places I'll make a beeline towards for a reliably tasty meal.

Always do it well. I have eaten at this chain in multiple locations and it is always consistent. Not just a pizza joint.

Didn't know you could mess up a salad. The chicken was overcooked and the wait staff were more i to their phones than the service.

Mostly that it's a bit overpriced for the portions. They do have vegetarian options but not a lot. It's one of those cases where you can pay $20 for a plate of vegetables and expect that to be a full mean but if you eat meat or fish you're getting something a bit more substantial. I was hesitant to come for just dinner and order à la carte for that very reason. So instead: we came for the vegetarian tasting menu. They offer a vegetarian, vegan or pescatarian (as well as regular Meat) tasting menu on Wednesdays and Thursdays only and it's 5 or 7 courses. We did 5 which was plenty. It was a very vegetable-forward meal but it was a good way to try their menu. I do wish they had more vegetarian protein offerings but again, the flavors were fantastic. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive and was able to explain each dish with detail. I'll def come back but I hope they offer some protein options like beans or tofu or something for their herbivore friends!

My…read morefriends and I arrived 10 min before they opened for brunch and there was no wait, though the restaurant filled up quickly behind us. The space is rustic and simple, with fresh cut flowers on the tables. A majority of the walls were occupied by floor to ceiling racks of wine, as that is their award-winning product. Their brunch menu changes weekly and is extremely tight and cohesive. My party ordered the entire food menu sans olives (2/3rds of us don't like them), and two plates of the potato pelmeni. My thoughts below: Amaro Apertivo: mocktail based on the namesake dessert wine. This tasted like candy but not too sweet, and we enjoyed it a lot. Lovage soda: Google told me that lovage is an herb that tastes like citrus and celery. I am a huge fan of drinks with a twist, and I'd say that celery is a pretty big one! Crisp and not too sweet, the citrus flavor definitely balanced the Celery, and both flavors kept the soda fresh and crisp. This was great paired with the rest of the herbaceous menu and balanced out the richness of some later dishes, though it's not necessarily something I would enjoy by itself without appropriate accompaniment. Pickled egg, fried shallot, dill: I had only heard of pickled eggs in the context of strange British food on YouTube, so I was a little hesitant about this dish. The concept of an egg floating in vinegar brine is a bit off-putting, but once I powered through that mental roadblock, I found myself enjoying this bite. The egg is perfectly cooked with a slightly jammy yolk, and the shallots added a much needed crunch. Dill enhanced the pickled taste while cutting through the richness of the fried shallots and yolk. Sourdough focaccia, whipped butter: Never in my life have I ever made focaccia this tall. This focaccia was raised by a loving family and nurtured to develop a golden, non-greasy, crisp crust protecting its tender, pillowy innards. The classic sourdough tang is a novel addition to each bite, and cuts through the creamy, whipped butter to keep me wanting more. I could eat a whole pan of this alone, but we had many more plates to sample. Saucisson sec salami, pickled carrot: This is a simple, charming, carb-free mini charcuterie; place a slice of salami, some of the mozzarella (next dish on this list, below), and its oil atop a pickled carrot base, and you are in for a perfectly balanced treat. My favorite part of this dish is the fact that the salami was incredibly savory, and not too salty. The more you chew it, the more the flavors express themselves, so be sure to chew slowly and thoroughly! The crunch of the crisp, dill-pickled carrot and the soft chewiness of the mozzarella give each bite a lot of good contrast. Mozzarella, green garlic oil: Fresh, hand-stretched mozzarella is something that even I, a notorious cheese-hater, can't say no to. It is not sharp or funky at all, nor is it too salty. Most of the flavor comes from the green garlic and olive oil smothering each bite. Fresh and floral with a little bite, this was delicious with the salami and carrot above. Potato pelmeni, asparagus green adjika, sour cream: Given the portion size of the previous dishes (small, tapas vibes), we were not expecting the platter full of double carb heaven that met our eyes. And we ordered two!!! This is a gorgeous dish with plump, quarter-sized pelmeni nestled in a vibrant green asparagus and herb sauce with a dollop of sour cream on top. This was a classic comfort dish with a verdant twist! The pelmeni were stuffed full of creamy potato, and the dough was cooked perfectly al dente for a satisfying, pillowy bite. The sauce was homey but packed with zippy flavor and tender asparagus. The major feedback I have for this dish is that it was way too salty, to the point where the flavor was a tad too sharp because of it. Lettuces, radish, pumpkin seed, caraway vinaigrette: It was through this dish that I found out what caraway tastes like and through this dish that I figured out that I'm not a caraway fan. The lettuces were bitter and when combined with the slightly medicinal caraway taste, wasn't for me. The crunch of the radish and the nutty pumpkin seeds were great in this dish though! Fennel cornmeal biscotti, rhubarb compote, cream: This was a single biscotti with generous dollops of compote and cream. We were quite full when this dish was set in front of us, so I was frankly relieved for the small portion size. The fennel in the biscotti paired wonderfully with the tart rhubarb, and the rich cream rounded things out nicely without tipping into cloying territory. The savory cornmeal complimented the fennel and provided additional depth of flavor. A great small bite to end on! Overall, Spencer's strong fundamentals allow them to take risks with in-season local produce. Some things worked for me and some didn't, but I would love to come back to see what they can create next!
