Come here for the drinks or for their attempt at Latin / Mexican bar food and bring some good company to boot. This is one of those places where a good time depends on who's drinking and who's not. The place has plenty of seating on the inside and quite a section for outdoor action. Folks can smoke and drink as they please outside with no problems. On the inside they have TVs galore, usually broadcasting Mexican soccer / futbol games. The staff is not pretentious and they have provided good service each time I'm here. Don't be nervous about trying to say the words on the menu, chances are the nearly app Nepalese staff might have trouble saying it too. Let's one thing straight: the "Mexican" food here is close to an abomination. Anyone coming here to get their fix of sopa tortilla or the next great mole poblano will be sorry they did. The bar is stacked with versions of bar friendly Mex, which includes nachos, quesadillas, and tacos. Most of the aforementioned is incredibly mediocre, but being that HK is not blessed with quality Mexican fare, the food at Tequila Jack's is hardly a surprise. Do however, indulge on their themed nights. On Saturday nights for example, is steak night for $108 each. It is a 10oz steak with some fixins like fries, veggies, and corn on the cob. I'm usually not terribly crazy about cheap steak but theirs is a slight exception. My steak has been cooked perfectly each time and the marbling / fat actually melts in your mouth. I have been here since the prices were $90 and the steak has been one of the only highlights food wise. On the drink front, they have a legit array of Mexican beers along with a stellar selection of tequila. It's probably the most abundant collection of tequila I've seen in the hood. The prices per shot aren't cheap ($140?) but if money doesn't matter as much the drunks are in their own league at TJ's. Lastly, if you're sitting outside at night: Watch out for our furry friends running around. They have caused quite a stir in the past. And *do not* feed them.

Fish tacos were fantastic...warm, great fish, light batter, good sauce, sweet and salty...they were really delicious. The nachos fell a little flat for us. It was the chip. Nachos are all about the foundational tortilla chip! The toppings were good, but it appeared that once the nachos are made, they must pop them in the oven to melt cheese and meld all the ingredients together. Subsequently, when they do that, they suck the moisture out of the chip. The chips were limp, thin and a bit dry. If they fix the quality of the chip, these would be spectacular, they would survive being in the oven part better. A great nacho chip needs to be a touch salty and bit heartier. We will go back and try maybe the burritos and/or enchiladas. There was someone at the table next to ours that ordered a salad with shrimp on top and it looked really good. We live on the other side of Hong Kong, so this will not be a regular stop for us. But if you were seeking out Mexican food, this was as authentic as I have seen yet since moving here.

The Diabla 2.0 with vodka, raspberry, tamarind and habanero failed on the taste as well as the liquor content. It might as well have been a bland mocktail.  We got the Mexican street-style corn and nachos to share. The corn was good - your usual Mexican corn on the cob with anejo butter, spiced mayo and parmesan.  The nachos were corn chips topped with vegetarian chili con carne (the carrots caught my attention) and the usual fixings of guac, sour cream, cheese, onions and cilantro. Let me get the negatives out of the way first. I was disappointed in the burrito. It was bland, beans were hard and undercooked (why were both refried beans and black beans in my burrito in the first place?), and many of the ingredients that should normally be standard inside the burrito were of extra cost as a side item (really, salsa is extra for a burrito?). That said - everything else was amazing! The high notes: The grilled corn on the cob! OMG Fantastic! The tacos were delicious. We ordered the 5-set, and picked one of each - pork, beef, chicken, shrimp, and fish. I can definitely say you can do without the seafood varieties, they were overcooked but edible since the flavors were incredible. Pork shined the brightest. I will say their soft taco shells (a true Mexican no-no) were likely not made in-house, they were a bit more chewy than one would hope... but it's easily forgivable. On the other hand, the free chips and salsa that started the meal were likely in-house made, and delicious top-to-bottom. I especially liked how fresh their salsa tasted. The margaritas were also sweet and tasty. I think I preferred the traditional lime over the guava, mango and wild fruit options. All could have used a bit more tequila (or maybe I'm just a lush), but then again it was happy hour so I can't complain. The best item on their menu might be... drumroll please... their nachos‽ Yes, the most non-Mexican item was also their most spectacular. How the heck did they manage to get a little of every topping onto every chip? That feat of perfection is a rarity in the USA, and it actually makes a big difference. Now keep in mind, nachos are a staple on every bar/pub menu across America, so one would more likely call it Tex-Mex than Mexican. But who cares, it was freakin' delicious at Caliente!!! The Nachos were definitely the highlight (I know, not the most authentic Mexican dish). But they really pay attention to the detail with the massive mound of nachos: every single chip was at least partially covered in melted cheese and had easy access to the other toppings. This means the cheese and toppings were not just sprinkled on top, but added layer by layer. I'm not sure if I found even a couple of naked chips.
