I've heard many good things about Caldense Bakery in Whitby so I had to drop in and try for myself. They specialize in a wide selection of fresh breads and pastries, while offering light meals. I had their Bifana sandwich, a Portuguese style grilled pork with caramelized onions on a fresh bun. It was a rustic sandwich with good flavour. My friend had the Chicken Caesar Wrap and that looked and tasted good. Of course, we couldn't be in a pastry shop without trying their delicious looking pastries. A pineapple topped bun caught my eye with its bright yellow colour. It was delicious and I ate the whole thing! My companion had a selection of pastries, mostly chosen by her young daughter. They were good, too! Tina's Portuguese Cuisine shares the space with them, offering more substantial meals. They specialize in Portuguese chicken and other favourites, with catering available. My friend tried their Shepherd's Pie. It was a generous serving that resulted in leftovers. While I usually prefer a more substantial meal for lunch, this food was good. Large assortment of bakery items, from breads to cakes, and macarons. This bakery is split with another restaurant serving Portuguese food. Left side isbfor Caldense. My friend suggested visiting Caldense as we were in the neighbourhood and it was a good experience! I got the Chicken Caesar Wrap, some pastries, and my friend got a pork sandwich and pineapple square. The wrap was pretty tasty, loaded with ingredients, but slightly too oily for my preference. The wrapper was similar to a thin pita, it was small and barely wrapped around all the ingredients. It was under $10 (I believe $7.50+tax) and well worth the price! Some of the treats we got were unmarked with no name or price to go with them. We ended up getting a macaron (birthday cake), lemon tart, double chocolate square, and a nutella lobster tail. They were not mind-blowing but still pretty decent. The bakery is cozy with a few tables to eat in, but it was split with another restaurant! It wasnt easily distinguishable and was quite confusing came time to order as it was our first time visiting. The left side is for Caldense, and the right side served Portuguese food. After ordering, there was no number or ticket, but they called out the order. We sat on the other side and I didn't hear it, but they came around to where we sat, very considerate as I was taking care of my young daughter as she was already eating her own food. read more

3.5 stars- Prices went up, macarons now $3 each! I still like them though. But some food items i feel like the recipe changed such as the ham and cheese croissant. It's not actually a croissant at all. There is a crispy topping and dense bread interior that I can't describe but it's not a croissant. Picked up many desserts for the long weekend, all the cheese cake was old, only one with strawberry was ok. Their bread is good but most was over cooked, burned. Asked about the corn bread & the girl tried to sell us non corn bread. The girl serving had no life in her, like she did not want to be there, no smile, lucky we got a hello. The other girl working with her was much better, I know it's the long weekend but do better. When spend $40, you expect the product to be fresh. I prefer to support small businesses. read more

Please go anywhere but here. Horrible Manager(Healther) and staff. As fate had it in store for us we committed cardinal sin by placing a custom cake order here. This cause 3 kids to suffer over night with food poisoning. When we tried to reach the bakery to inform them about this issue, with were greeted with a racist stereotyping where the owner was just concerned about his profits and didn't even bother to understand and discuss the issue. We were not looking for refund or any substitution (never could) but the fact that kids suffered was a major issue for us. Have reported this to Durham Food and safety (In the meantime hopefully if you unfortunately end up in this store, will pray for you not to suffer too bad.) read more

There is such a mix of quality with the products here that it can't justify more than two stars. Some of the cake slices and cheesecakes are delicious, but others are just too overly sweet, and for some reason plastered in what they call "whipped cream" but in reality is edible oil. Edible being used loosely... To me, for a bakery that purportedly makes good cakes, it is a crime to use edible oil. And until they change I will look elsewhere for such products. That being said, their savoury items are nice, I particularly like the sausage bread and ham & cheese croissant. A wonderful surprise in Whitby! This is a sure fire hit with the ladies who would like a cozy place for a cup of coffee or an afternoon tea accompanied by tasty assorted patisserie. The patisserie here is perfectly executed, which is not too sweet, hence allowing the different exotic flavors of sweet orange, almond, amaretto, chocolate, & cream etc. to come out. At first glance the patisserie reminded me of shiny gems as they sat in the store display case. When I tasted them they tasted freshly made, the sponge & creams were spot-on! Don't let the previous reviews dissuade you. One can't judge the place on the sandwiches alone, which by the way came to us in hot & freshly baked bread. This bakery was definitely welcomed by us into our neighbourhood! Who doesn't love a good bakery?! They have excellent Portuguese custard cups & are a great price! They have a lovely selection of cakes & naughty squares etc. Fresh breads, meats, and different hot meat patties. I went to pick up a birthday cake I ordered from them for my little girls birthday. When I arrived with my friend we saw it was the worst thing I ever saw in my life. I've made better cakes. When I complained to the people there and asked what this monstrosity was. They replied that's your cake take it or leave it. When I advised that I wanted my money back the management advised me to come with him in the back. He led us downstairs to a small basement. Before I knew what was happening We were overpowered and chained to a pole. Next thing I know the manager went over to a box and opened it. Inside was a man dressed in leather from head to toe with a ball gag in his mouth. He called him the gimp. He proceeded to chain him up across from us and then took my friend to a separate room. I was so scared. I heard grunts and screams. I could only guess what he was doing. I managed to free myself from my bonds, and knocked the gimp out with a 2x4 on the floor. I managed to escape unharmed. I said fuck it and left my friend as I still had to get to my daughters birthday party. So I have to say the service was horrendous overall and will never go back again. read more

Good place to have breakfast but if you're looking for some great Portuguese pastries, this place has a great variety to choose from.

We frequent Caldense bakeries all the time so the food is pretty standard all around. As a Portuguese customer we always try to support Portuguese establishments. Today though the customer service was horrible. We walked in and there was one large group of customers at a table and 2 customers waiting in line. We sat down at a table and waited to be served. No one even glanced to see if there was anyone waiting to be helped. 5 other tables of customers came after us and everyone was helped immediately. We waited at least 20mins. We had to go and ask to be served and the young lady who finally came had an attitude like we were inconveniencing her. We were actually ready to leave. Workers should ensure that they are paying attention to customers who walk in and ensure they check to make sure all seated guests are served in a timely manner. read more

A place like this in Toronto would be pretty good but being in downtown Whitby, it's probably the best place for food you can find. I've come here many times for their custard tarts and cakes. That being said, probably like it more than most since its similar to the sweets and pastries I had when I was younger. read more

On our way back from the library my friend and I decided to check this place out. It was cheap enough $1-3 per item, comparable to a Superstore/Metro bakery. Unfortunately the quality is about the same and the consistency even worse! All the tarts are cloyingly sweet. My face puckered up like it was anti lemon or something. I think they have something with sugar producers the way governments have deals with ethanol manufacturers, I don't know... all I know is unless you're having coffee with it, it's pretty tough to eat. Speaking of tough the steak in the "steak and cheddar wrap" was literally tough and falling apart. The canned mushrooms didn't exactly help the flavor either. The chocolate croissant had some cheap, bitter, and very grainy chocolate in it and was still as week old corn beard. All in all a terrible experience I do not hope to have again. read more

If you are tired of the chain coffee shop options come to Caldense Bakery. My only recommendation is for them to offer classic toast for their breakfast items as their rustic bread can be little dry for some people's liking. For the person who gave this place 1 star because their omelette came with black olives, this was no one else's fault but your mother. Either ask what comes in Veggie omelette before you order it or pick out any vegetables you don't like. Maybe you and your mother should stick to Tim Hortons where food comes frozen and workers just have to nuke it up. read more

I wanted a simple fresh baked vanilla cake for my birthday and so I decided to order a cake from here. Owner said that they make it fresh for you upon order. Everything sounded great! The cake I got was awful, completely inedible. It was super dry, and had no sweetness at all beside the icing. I never return anything but I would have preferred a box cake over the one I picked up. You know the fact that I ordered it last minute, I figured maybe they made a mistake or forgot an ingredient in error. This does not warrant a 1 star rating. But, the interaction with the owners and the bad customer service I got from them really upset me. Their argument was that "I returned a cake that was not whole! It had 4 missing pieces!" Um.. Yeah!!!! We cut 4 inedible slices out to which we threw away!!! Didn't think we needed to spit out what we tried or should have placed the pieces back in order to get a refund. Especially amidst a viral pandemic we didn't think it necessary to keep those pieces or return a cake in perfect shape! The male owner was completely rude, he wanted to refuse the refund on this premise. The wife or lady called me later after the refund to continue yelling at me over the phone because of the same reason. It was very unprofessional and uncalled for. The cake was 30$ no big deal people. You have lost a customer for ever and I will tell everyone I know that you guys are awful people who does not know how to take care of your customers! read more

Such fresh bread and amazing Portugese tarts. They sell out quick though so you gotta get them while they last. Prices are really reasonable for the quality. Never tried the cakes or pies but they always have some in stock and they look fantastic! I have never eaten in though, I usually take out. Would recommend to anyone who doesn't know it. I just read the review of the person Moshin A. and I cannot believe this is a legitimate review. I go to this bakery from day one they opened it. Sometimes even daily. 40% of the pastries is hit and miss but 60% of the daily consumed pastries such as Portuguese custard tarts, egg pastries and their big creamy doughnuts are the best out there. Love their soups that they make daily. They are home made and I love them. I do not think that their sweets are overly sweet. That is individual. Their buns and breads are awesome and if paired with the deli department you can't go wrong. I would definitely recommend it. read more

Nice fresh European style bread delivered each morning fresh. They are famous for their Portuguese tarts. A must have. Also they have a built in cafe where you can sit and ogle their pastries. Prices are decent. read more
