So driving into Orillia to do a job we pass by this place that wasn't open called "The Shack" and…read moreman did it appear as one. After finishing up mid afternoon it's time to grab some food so looking at ratings on here and elsewhere I see "The Shack" has a decent rating vs how many people have had it. Ok, why not... I'm willing to give places a try. Although there isn't any place to eat inside it was a nice day and they have some tables outside so we order. I ordered the jerk chicken and about 5 minutes in the cook/owner says it doesn't look how he expects and that he doesn't want to serve it(thanks for the honesty!) and recommends the ribs instead so I go for those. They are quite nice and well cooked bbq short ribs. The jerk I was told is only mildly spicy anyway so no loss there since I like the traditional way. The two sides I got, roasted potatoes with very garlicky garlic sauce was good but I could tell they were day old. The other was corn bread and it was nicely done as well. While everything was made the day before it was still quite good, fresh would have been great but it's worth going here. My wife got the smoked chicken and said it was very good as well and it tasted good all throughout rather than just the skin. All in all give it a shot, place does t look good but the food is.

But the food was a bit of a let down. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out over cooked. It wasn't burnt or anything but it was closer to well done than medium rare. My wife ordered the grilled octopus. It had a weird consistency throughout. The edges did have some nice charring to it though. I wanted to avoid going to a chain restaurant but you're better off going to one of the chains and skipping this place.

You have to call ahead for reservations, it appears the locals love this place and its easy to understand why, if you're from the area the hostess seems to know everyone on a first name basis and they all get along (staff and patrons) quite well. With our greeting however, not so much. As soon as we arrived, before even stating our name the hostess told us we were late for our reservation, when in fact we were ten minutes early. When we were finally seated, it was next to a giant spider web. We'd asked to switch seats but were told they were fully booked (understood to not switch seats, but a giant spider web should be removed from the seating area). At each table, without asking they place a giant bottle of water (will get back to that later) so we poured 2 glasses for ourselves. Facebook photos showed an expensive surf n turf dish which was served on a black platter, we pointed this out to the waitress and asked if we could be served this dish exactly like the photo (on the platter), was told yes but we received the dish on a white plate. Not that big of a deal if it were say a burger or sandwich, but as this dish alone was over $50 it was a disappointment. Both the chicken and lobster were overcooked, and when we got the bill we realized the water bottle was $5.

I was craving for the shrimp patties and the only good ones were usually downtown. I found Galina's Bbq via Yelp, so I knew I had to get some to try. I got the whole chicken dinner and I was AMAZED at the portions! For under $50, they legit packed the rice and potatoes to the top! Everything was super tasty but the shrimp patties could had been better if I reheated it in the oven. The chicken was super moist and the potatoes were so delicious. The rice was a bit too salty though. Service was great; the waitress told me her aunt opened this restaurant more than 10 years ago. The restaurant was clean and spacious, but definitely not super big. I would definitely come back for more!!

We arrived for a late lunch on a Sunday, the dining area was empty so we got to pick of tables. We ordered two appetizers, three entrees and a drink. The meal started out well, with some bread, butter and preserved olives. It was lovely to have something to nibble on while waiting. 30 min later, the appetizer of chirizo sausage arrived. It was set alight table side, and we enjoyed the crispy hot sausage. Unfortunately, it took another 30min for our entrees to arrive. My chicken dinner was not even warm, the veggies were overcooked and cold. The only thing hot on my plate was the potatoes, which were delicious. After such a long wait, it was disappointing to be served cold food. Also, our second appetizer never came and we had to remind the waiter not to bill us for it.

I had their Bifana sandwich, a Portuguese style grilled pork with caramelized onions on a fresh bun. It was a rustic sandwich with good flavour. My friend had the Chicken Caesar Wrap and that looked and tasted good. Of course, we couldn't be in a pastry shop without trying their delicious looking pastries. A pineapple topped bun caught my eye with its bright yellow colour. It was delicious and I ate the whole thing! My companion had a selection of pastries, mostly chosen by her young daughter. They were good, too! Tina's Portuguese Cuisine shares the space with them, offering more substantial meals. They specialize in Portuguese chicken and other favourites, with catering available. My friend tried their Shepherd's Pie. It was a generous serving that resulted in leftovers. While I usually prefer a more substantial meal for lunch, this food was good. I'll definitely come back for their fresh breads and pastries!

My friend suggested visiting Caldense as we were in the neighbourhood and it was a good experience! I got the Chicken Caesar Wrap, some pastries, and my friend got a pork sandwich and pineapple square. The wrap was pretty tasty, loaded with ingredients, but slightly too oily for my preference. The wrapper was similar to a thin pita, it was small and barely wrapped around all the ingredients. It was under $10 (I believe $7.50+tax) and well worth the price! Some of the treats we got were unmarked with no name or price to go with them. We ended up getting a macaron (birthday cake), lemon tart, double chocolate square, and a nutella lobster tail. They were not mind-blowing but still pretty decent. The bakery is cozy with a few tables to eat in, but it was split with another restaurant! It wasnt easily distinguishable and was quite confusing came time to order as it was our first time visiting. The left side is for Caldense, and the right side served Portuguese food. After ordering, there was no number or ticket, but they called out the order. We sat on the other side and I didn't hear it, but they came around to where we sat, very considerate as I was taking care of my young daughter as she was already eating her own food.
