Burnt Portuguese Custard Tarts
Sarah I.

Who doesn't like any Pasteis de Nata, the classic Portuguese Custard Tarts? Caldense Bakery is famous for these sweet pastries. This location is in a nice spot in a strip mall, making parking convenient unlike a lot of the downtown branches. We had delicious coffees and all of us had a tart each, which were delicious. Service was good. We also picked up a box of 30 Pasteis de Nata to go. This cost just over $50, which is reasonable. The box was nicely sealed for us. When we got home and opened the box, about 20 of the pastries were burnt. Completely different to the ones we had tasted when at the bakery. This isn't acceptable. We live almost an hour away, so not exactly a pop-in for us. We were unable to serve these pastries for an event. My entire family are huge fans of Caldense, but this was the first time visiting this particular branch. This is conning people. You can't serve and display one thing in store and send home another. I'm extremely disappointed. No, we won't be returning.

I know what I am going to order even before setting my foot inside Caldense Bakery & Cafe. Francesinha is a Portuguese sandwich originally from Porto, made with bread, wet-cured ham, linguiça, fresh sausage like chipolata, steak or roast meat and covered with melted cheese and a hot thick tomato and beer sauce served with french fries. [1] Here at Caldense the Francesinha ($8.50) might not have the french fries but it is close enough to what they have in Porto. A triple deck sandwich topped with a fried runny egg and melted cheese! The sauce might lacked any taste of beer but it compliment the "sandwich" well. Tosta mista ($4.95) which is really a ham and cheese sandwich looked a little sad beside the Francesinha. The service here is excellent. Just order and pay at the cash and your sandwich will be delivered to your table. The server was like You not going to eat those sandwiches but I was ordering for my Yelp friend too! Until my next trip to Portugal to try the real deal, I am quite happy to enjoy what they serves here at Caldense. I will be back! [1] from Wikipedia

Caldense Bakery becomes a "Double-Double" Bakery with this -=TEN10th=- location. Not only congratulations are in order, but also Welcome to the City of Vaughan. Following in the path of Costa Verde, there's no lack of Portuguese presence. Shall we call this area with varieties of Portuguese Delights, Little Little Portugal[1]? In comparison to various other Caldense locations, here are some p-r-o-s... - New Furnishing, but of course - Back-of-house semi-booths have power-outlets - Friendly personable young Ladies [Big Yay] - Menu shown on LCD displays - Nearby LCBO [when you need fresh air] - Nearby Costa Verde Churrsaquiera - 5 : 3 0 AM opening hour [ IF I read correctly] Found myself brand new afternoon coffee-shop spot for Cappuccino($2.62). Pastel de Nata($1.24), anyone? Ahemm, both of those are MINE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [1] Hope this doesn't offend anyone, especially Portuguese men. My apologies if any. Please do send me a msg of what best to call this new cultural neighbourhood.

chicken salad to go

Nothing but good being shoveled into my mouth from Caldense bakery. As you walk into the shop, your eyes are directed to the sparkling show case of desserts. To your left is a rotating display of whole cakes. Further to your left is a hot counter for dine-in breakfast and lunches, another display case of fresh meats and cheeses, and shelves on shelves of Portuguese goods and (I assume) daily baked breads & buns. Run on sentence much? Today I stopped in for a dose of caffeine and picked up a chicken salad to-go. I love their espresso and I especially love their prices. Today's salad was to accompany my soup I packed for lunch. The small salad was actually quite large, leaving no room for my remaining lunch. I am not complaining. Note: there was no shortage of feta cheese on this bad boy. In the past I've picked up a DIY sandwich and salad. I drool over their sour dough buns with prosciutto and provolone. They've got a sandwich area where you can add lettuce, tomato, cucumber, peppers, sauces, etc., etc. I'm not sure how well advertised this is but if you ask politely, I'm sure it can be done for you too. Over the display cases are TV's that present their menu options. You can take it to-go or opt for table service. With Halloween quickly approaching, their interior is decked to the nines in ghoulish decor. With that being said, I can't wait to see how festive they get for Christmas. As a final point, the service is what keeps me coming back. I find every interaction to be a pleasant one. This is huge in my books!

great place to boost yourself with yumny egg custurds and good coffee. I enjoyed my latte and bakeries here

I have to say this was my go to bakery for Portuguese tarts. I live 45min from this bakery and make the drive. To my dismay, I had a large order for a function I was hosting and received nasty burnt tarts. I was really upset. Why sell burnt tarts? I called and was told to come and they would exchange them. I get there and because I threw 5 out they wouldn't give me the 50 that I needed for the function the next day....only wanted to give me 45. WTH!!!! You burnt the tarts and I have to spend more than 3hours driving back and forth!!!! To top it off....no apology or recognition that they sold me crap. Do not go to this bakery....choose another Caldense. The staff are dense and the manager cannot manage. (Guess why his other store had to close?) At least I got my money back. Never again

The first time I left without getting anything because I couldn't get service. I gave it another shot on a different day. There aren't prices listed anywhere. If you want bread, no one will help you. I decided to get one that was pre-cut and pre-packaged. I also waited a bit to order some cannolis. Even though there's a sign at the front saying that masks are required, most of the staff here do not wear masks. The bread here was okay. The pre-cut, pre-packaged bread was a little dry, but it was a good buy at $3. The cannolis were pretty good. I shell had a little bit of a brittleness to it, but it wasn't dry. The filling was quite good. I couldn't quite tell what it was, but the one with the orange-ish filling was my favorite. The cannolis are $2.50 each.

Located in one of Vaughan's busiest plazas full of food options, this Korean bingsu café stands out…read moreas one of the best dessert spots in the area especially if you're looking for something beyond bubble tea. As part of a growing chain with several locations across the city, this particular branch impressed us with both its quality desserts and genuinely friendly service. We came as a group of seven, and the staff went out of their way to accommodate us, rearranging tables so we could sit together comfortably. It's those little gestures that make a difference, especially when visiting with a larger group. Our top picks here were the Black Sesame Bingsu and the Tiramisu Bingsu. The Black Sesame Bingsu is a perfect option if you prefer desserts that are less sweet and more refined in flavour. The finely shaved ice is generously dusted with black sesame powder and topped with mochi, red bean, almond flakes, and a scoop of black sesame ice cream. The nutty, earthy notes make this one a standout. The Tiramisu Bingsu is just as delightful, with a mini slice of tiramisu perched on top and then chocolate powder, cheese, and a touch of espresso to bring out that classic tiramisu flavour. Rich and satisfying without being too heavy. The bingsu comes in three sizes: cup, small, and large. We went with the large size, which is perfect for sharing and they conveniently provide sharing bowls to make it easy. We also tried the Butter Bung Eo Ppang (a Korean fish-shaped pastry), opting for the salted butter & red bean filling. It was freshly made, warm, and a comforting and delicious side treat that we'd highly recommend trying if you want something a little different. Whether you're stopping by after dinner or looking for a place to chill with friends, this spot hits the mark.

Great Vibe, Disappointing Espresso (from an ex-Barista)…read moreStepped into this spot looking to grab some genuinely good coffee. As an ex-barista, I'm fussy--I hate spending money and not getting a quality product. Unfortunately, the coffee was a swing and a miss. I ordered one iced latte and one hot latte. In both drinks, the espresso was burnt. I actually watched the barista pulling the shots, and I could tell immediately. To make matters worse, the hot drink was barely a latte; it was essentially a cappuccino based on the absurd amount of foam on top. Plus, the milk itself was ruined. There's a certain temperature and texture for steaming milk, and this was clearly burnt milk that had been frothed way too aggressively. Aesthetically, the café is lovely--it's cute and a great spot to work from home. My recommendation? Skip the espresso drinks. Maybe try the matcha or a pastry instead. I definitely won't be back for the coffee.

I noticed this Chicha San Chen and wanted to check it out. Jason joined me to work off some of the ramen that he had devoured. I've been to the Chicha San Chen at CF Markville. This store is at least twice as big as that location. There were plenty of places to sit down and enjoy your tea. I had a couple of fruity sparkling drinks at the CF Markville place. I was going to ask the man behind the counter if he had them. Instead, he said that he'd be back and I could look at the menu. It was delivered in a not-now-I'm-busy tone. It was odd. It's the only reason why this place doesn't get five stars. I'm so glad that Jason was with me. He said that the woman at CF Markville suggested that he get the high mountain pouchong tea with lemon juice and konjac. I decided to go with this drink. I got this drink with less sugar and less ice. I paid with my debit card on my phone. I tapped and was done. It didn't take much time for this drink to be made. It was nice chatting up a storm with Jason as we waited. The moment of truth was here. My drink was ready. I took a sip. It was awesome! The foam tasted like lemon meringue. The tea was perfect with the lemon juice. The konjac was chewy. I haven't had konjac since I visited Song Tea eons ago (rest in bubble tea peace). I wish that this drink came in a larger size. I drank it too fast... haha! I had a great experience with my friend's recommendation. I like that there's lot of parking in this plaza. I'd return again for more good bubble tea. Maybe staff will be more cheerful then. (437)

It was cool to learn that Seara Bakery & Pastry offers Portuguese pastries and desserts in Vaughan…read more A recent Yelp experience brought me here. This bakery is located in a plaza with plenty of parking. I had no problem finding a parking spot coming from work. Sadly, all the Portuguese egg tarts (natas) were sold out when I had arrived at 5:30 pm. However, I did manage to get a pistachio loaf that looked yummy and ended up taking it home. I have had the following items at this place: - Iced latte - Portuguese vanilla custard-filled donut - Ham and cheese croissant My iced latte was awesome. The woman at the counter asked whether I wanted sugar. I declined it, which made this drink perfect. It was cold. The coffee was smooth. It had the perfect amount of milk. I loved it. My vanilla custard-filled donut came out next. It was cut in half, so I admired all the custard in it. It had sugar around it that was the only sweetness that I got from it. The custard had a mild vanilla flavour and had little sugar, which I appreciated. The donut was more on the egg side of things. If you don't like that eggy taste, it may not be for you. I personally loved how different it was compared to regular overly sweet donuts. My ham and cheese croissant had arrived. When you order a croissant warmed up, it gets pressed in a panini machine. It was different, but it worked. There was a single slice of ham and another slice of cheese in this croissant. It was yummy, but I was yearning for more filling. The croissant had a different type of flakiness when it was pressed to death. I used the washroom before I headed home. Staff here were constantly cleaning tables, chairs, and the washrooms during my visit. The women's washroom is a single stall and it was super clean. My pistachio loaf came up to $8. I paid with a debit card. I tipped and tapped. Done! There are nuts on top of the pistachio loaf, but not in the loaf itself. The loaf was closer to a pound cake, but without a whole lot of moisture. It also had a hint of vanilla or some other extract in it. It wasn't sweet, but it did require downing it with a drink. I ended up taking half of the loaf and making French toast out of it. It turned out nicely. I hope to return to get some natas. There were so many pastries that I want to try as many as possible. (245)
