Stopped by this nursery after driving past it numerous times on my way home and wanting to see what they had, and lo and behold, they had the hydrangeas I've been looking for! I was pleasantly surprised because they can be pretty hard to find this time of year since they're usually more available in the spring. I've specifically been wanting to plant them before winter so they have time to establish their roots and hopefully thrive next summer. They had quite a few to choose from, and all of the plants looked really healthy. The guy at the front was also super nice and helpful. He helped me carry and load all of the plants into my car, which I really appreciated. The prices were reasonable and seemed pretty on par with what hydrangeas are going for around the Bay Area. Overall, really happy I stopped by and excited to get these planted in my garden! read more

They routinely close early. Posted business hours mean nothing. Thankfully, there's another nursery nearby. read more

Large nursery located off the highway. We went on a semi rainy day and that staff were so nice. Two of them walked us around to show us options based on the criteria we had. They offer discounts based on volume. Since I went in winter the plants weren't as colorful or lively I bet it's much nicer in spring or summer. read more

It's a little of the beaten path but worth the drive. They have a great selection and all the plants/trees are well maintained and healthy. Found this beautiful "Tahoe Gold" mandarin tree - supposed to be a prolific producer of sweet fruit within the East Bay climate. read more

We went on a nursery tour today and this was stop #2. We loved the selections of the different types of yucca plants here. The ones they had at the entrance were very nice and about $150which is a reasonable price for the size. We ended up finding a dwarf olive tree which was $20 cheaper than what we had found in San Jose. So that was exciting. They have lot of different kinds of trees and shrubs. While there, the employee told us that they would be getting more flowers in the next couple of weeks and because of the storms they have been a bit delayed in blooming and being ready for sale. I would be interested to return to see what kinds of flowers they bring in. They did have rose bushes and rose trees which ranged from $80- $110. read more

I can't tell you the number of times I have driven by and never stopped. We stopped on a day that no one was there when it opened, so we had the place to ourselves! We finally did it because I was looking for a plant for the front yard and we walked in and there was what I was looking for! We asked for recommendations for ground covering and was recommended one that would complement our new plants. We were impressed by the selection to the point that it was overwhelming. We'll definitely come back here for more plant inspiration/future purchases. The driveway is one way in and one way out, so share the road. There is plenty of customer parking. read more

This nursery is located very conveniently right next to the 680 freeway in Sunol. There are two nurseries located almost next to each other this is the second one that is further back on Calaveras Road. This nursery has better prices than the other one closer to the freeway on Calaveras and it has a very large selection of local trees. They also provide discounts if you buy a larger quantity of plants of the same size. read more

I needed (4) pink jasmine plants and was delighted to find them at Calaveras Nursery. I hadn't been to this nursery in a while and was really surprised at their variety and beautiful selection of plants/trees, how well kept the plants were and the excellent service. They loaded my vehicle and my large bag of soil which was much appreciated. I will definitely be back! read more

This place is alright. Been here several times. I went today - it's not a close/quick drive from my house - and as I was entering they were closing shop early. Despite telling them I knew exactly what I needed and would be in/out rapidly, they said they had somewhere to go and wanted to leave. So I went next door to Lisa Arnold instead and got what I needed. read more

This is a really nice, large nursery. Many of the plants were very well labeled with detail care instructions, but there were also large sections that were not labeled at all. However, just ask someone and they are very nice to answer your questions. Minus 1 star for sparse succulents section and indoor plant section. This is a great place if you need a lot of plants because they have bulk discounts. read more

I wanted to buy my first bonsai tree and the Bonsai club recommended I check out Calaveras Nursery, where they said most of their members go. It wasn't because of Cobra Kai that I wanted a bonsai tree;), but I do wonder if there will be an uptick of desire for bonsai trees because of that show! The club recommended I start out by getting a bushy and full juniper with a really interesting trunk. The members usually get a junket with a twisted trunk or a fat trunk and the more footage is good as it indicates vigor. When I called the nursery to make sure they had junipers in stock, Dylan answered and was very kind answering all my questions. I came today to the nursery and Dylan was amazing! He showed me many different junipers they have and even helped me choose one bonsai that had a thick trunk. He also showed me the bonsai that he worked on and they were incredible! You can even buy the ones that he has worked on and I've added those photos here. Just looking at the ones he worked on made me smile! I would definitely recommend checking out this nursery if you're looking to get started with bonsais. read more

Good selection of trees. They carry cone types that are not usually available at the big chain nurseries. The staff is knowledgeable. Only down side is this place is located in a very open area so when it is hot, you get scorched. So bring a large brimmed hat and sunscreen. read more

Extremely positive experience, owners were super helpful and friendly. We purchased the most beautiful pistache tree to replace a huge shade tree or neighbors removed leaving our home full sun all day! The 24inch box was perfect for us very very well priced and they helped us load it onto the Home Depot flatbed I rented. I will definitely be going back. After hours and day and weeks of research online for the best full sun trees to grow in our area I went to this nursery and they carried every single one! They know what grows well in our area vs carrying items that are tempting and gorgeous and then die in the heat. Can't say enough if you need really large trees this is the place read more

THIS IS A PUBLIC NURSERY. For many years I thought this was only for contractors. It's mainly a public nursery with great prices. This nursery is an Awesome place. Highly recommended. Damien and Adam always do their best to make sure you're happy. Thank you for making my visit enjoyable. read more

This is a fantastic nursery. It's located in the middle of nowhere, and pretty easy to get lost - so be sure to download directions from their website. This is the place you see while driving 680 through the sunol grade. We made the hike here, as their prices are WAY better than our local nurseries. They're not set up as a pretty little garden shop, they're more like the Costco of plants and trees. They have a large, almost overwhelming variety to look at. This is the place to go and get a mature japanese maple (about 5 varieties), or some border shrubs that you need to buy a bunch of. They supply many of our local nurseries - so here you're really getting straight to the source. The staff is friendly, patient and helpful. I say patient, because I was completely overwhelmed. I went in thinking I knew what I wanted... and then as the options unfolded I was crippled by all the options. I was dazzled by the flowering magnolias... (see my photo). Borrow a truck, make the trip - but set aside enough time to meander the place and really see all of your options! read more

Great selection, great prices and very helpful staff! Love their location with ez fwy access!

I needed some help (okay, I need lots of help!). I killed two Japanese maple trees in my backyard last year because of the drought. I grew up in the east bay with pine and oak trees on our property--who knew trees needed so much care and feeding (particularly water)? I bought 2 green Japanese maple trees last year from Calaveras Nursery last year and they were very helpful. The trees are doing very well. I need two more (another tree that did not get enough water is not recovering and I need to replace some really sad-looking bushes in my front yard)). I just called them and again, the guy on the phone was very helpful. I will be swinging by to buy them as soon as someone lined up to remove the old trees and plant the new ones. read more

Disappointing. I was shopping wholesale nurseries for a client and stopped in to check the availability of certain plant materials and pricing. I guess they have plenty of sales because the person who walked me through the inventory wasn't very helpful. He told me that they "rarely" do wholesale orders. (?) He told me I would have to have an order in the "thousands" to get wholesale pricing. Too bad. I did have that order but I'm going to another vendor who is responsive and eager to fill my order. Got customer service? Nope. read more

I had great hopes for this place - I had really wanted to give this place 5 stars. The owners are courteous and helpful and the place is a gardeners dream come true. I did want to bring to light one big issue that I had with this place. Almost a year back I had ordered Carex Pansa - a kind of native grass that is used in native gardens. I was in the process of switching my lawn to all- native plants. I ordered some saplings from a local nursery in the south bay and the rest from Calaveras. My transaction went smooth and I brought home the 40+ 1 gallon containers with what was sold to me as Carex Pansa. This is a grass species, so it is really hard to tell if it is the right variety or not. Besides you trust your nursery especially when you are paying that kind of money! A year later, the Carex grass from my local nursery is growing as expected. The ones i purchased from Calaveras, is a complete disaster. It is not the right species of grass- it is not native- it is not drought tolerant and it has completely ruined the landscaping I had planned. I am so terribly disappointed and feel cheated, after all the trouble I went through. I will need to spend gobs and gobs of money to pull out the stuff that Calaveras sold me and plant the real Carex pansa. Besides, my goal was to save water and Calaveras nursery REALLY messed this one up for me. So, dear unsuspecting buyers - watch out- make sure you are taking home what you really want to take home. read more

If you are shopping for a tree, especially a crape myrtle, make this your first stop. After shopping all over the East Bay, I finally ended up at Calaveras Nursery in Sunol. My obsession to find two more crape myrtles took me to nurseries in Pleasant Hill, Concord, Clayton, Brentwood, Lafayette, and Livermore. I made the mistake of settling on a tree from one of these nurseries that ended up looking more like a 5 gallon tree in a 15 gallon bucket. Kinda felt like Charlie Brown when I took the tree home. Intent on finding the perfect tree I kept searching and finally decided to make the hour drive to Sunol. Upon my arrival it was worth every minute of the drive. I can honestly say that after looking high and low for a good crape myrtle the price and selection at Calaveras Nursery rivaled any of the other stops I made. I was a bit heartbroken to see such a large selection after already purchasing the Charlie Brown tree. Shortly after my arrival I was quickly greeted by Adam who was extremely friendly and very helpful. He did an expert job tying the branches and squeezing the tree into my little vehicle with no damage at all. The quality of the tree was superb especially after visiting the nursery right next to Calaveras, where I left feeling a bit hopeless in my search. The trunk of the crape myrtle was straighter and thicker than my previous two purchases from other nurseries. I can't say enough good things about this nursery and I'm kicking myself for not coming here first. My only regret is not having enough room to plant another tree. read more

Came here for the first time by chance about a year ago. They happened to be having an annual clearance sale and just about everything was 30-50% off. We left that day with lots of plants and smiles on our faces. Since that day we have returned many times. There regular prices are good and it also seems like they have pretty frequent sales. The employees are very helpful and the plant selection is great. They have lots of trees and shrubs in all different sizes. This really is not your typical nursery. Don't expect to find gardening tools, or specialty fertilizers. They sell plants...and they have a TON of them. I would recommend this place to anyone; especially if you are starting a large landscaping job. You can get large plants at great prices. WARNING...this is not a hoity toity nursery. There are 3-4 guys who work there and they all seem to be cool, down to earth guys. They know about plants and can lift heavy pots. Don't expect this nursery to be hosting a tea party anytime soon. read more

Uhm Yelp we need 100 stars for this business!!!!!! First off! Adam!!!!!! His name is so perfect its like adam & eve of garden he is extremely & genuinely helpful & honest!!!! This is a fresh review as we head back home to Lathrop. We drove 1 1/2 hr with traffic to get trees from them. I love the selections this is my 2nd visit. The first one was just to look around but this is my first time to actually buy. We were in a hurry so we only got 4 trees. But will be definitely back for more next time to do our slope! Highly highly recommended! Thank you Adam till next time! read more

Just bought a purple lilac and a Santa Rosa plum. These folks take good care of their stock, and they know their plants. They're just starting to go dormant, the Santa Rosa is about 5 years old and topped. The nurseries thrive in this area of the Sunol Valley, and this one is worth checking out if you are looking for acquisitions to your garden. Good variety, well laid out, caring and knowledgeable people. I'm partial to this area, it's history to San Francisco Water. There is a water temple on SFWD Sunol Valley Headquarters (the office once was General Vallejo's summer home). The valley once served as a giant filter bed, a supply for the Spring Valley Water Company. San Francisco still gets water from the head waters of Alameda Creek before Alameda gets it. The Town of Sunol's supply is from Hetch Hetchy Dam, and local sources behind Calaveras Dam and John Turner Dam, treated at the Sunol Filter Plant. No shortage for water, Sunol Valley nurseries never go dry. read more

I've always had decent experiences at Calaveras Nursery. One of the guys there (sorry, don't know his name) is quite helpful, not sure about the rest. CN has a nice selection of plants/trees and many plants I've purchased from them have done well in my yard. Small area of improvement: I sent an email to them with a small plant list and did not receive a response (don't have email listed if you don't check it...maybe a spam box issue, but not a huge deal.)
