I've never wrote comments like this before in my life even in a dirty Indian place. service was so shit you have to order everything at the front desk with a weird look korean worker staring at you like you are some sort of monkey. Noodles are not even cooked enough. Soups are taste less. a random piece of stone from bow river may taste better and softer. I tipped 15% at the beginning where I did not even receive any service yet but I have to bring my own noodle and plate to my table WTF? Come here if you are a sub and you are looking to be abused. Hand pulled noodles are delicious. The beef noodles soup had just the right amount of spice, beef was tender, and thick noodles were nice and chewy! I ordered the combo A which includes sliced beef and a salty egg for the man. I had the stir-fried noodles with beef and veggies. This was perfect for my little guy and myself . I have been wanting to try Calan for so long after seeing a post about them on Instagram, but just never got there until last night! The downtown location is cozy and clean (there is also another location on Centre Street N) with a decent amount seating space. There is no table service, a person orders and pays at the front, given an order number which is called when the food is ready. THE FOOD: noodles are prepared behind glass for all to watch, which is a big selling point of this place. I got the hand pulled flat wide noodles in the beef broth.The portion is huge! So much meat and the amount of noodles is bonkers! I took 3/4 of it home bc I couldn't finish it!! Re: drinks - there was a fridge with pops, not too much selection there. I don't actually know if the place sells alcohol bc I didn't see it? Ordering is kind of a confusing process, I actually pulled up one of their Instagram pics and just showed her what I wanted (or thought I did) and it worked out perfectly! We were so impressed with the original Calan Beef Noodle location we dined at two days ago that we came here with a party of four today for lunch. One guest wasn't familiar with the name but became excited when he saw the location, telling us one of his best friends who is from China comes here telling him, "this is where I eat when I want something as close to what my mom made for me when I was growing up." All I can say is, he grew up eating very, very well if it was this good. We opted for different dishes and can now confirm the breadth of what they offer is varied and all extremely well prepared. I had the #5 Hand Pulled Noodle with Minced Beef and Vegetable Soup with wide and flat noodles. Such a massive dish I could only eat half with the rest going to another in our party for lunch tomorrow. We also had #1 Hand Pulled Noodle in Beef Soup, and the two other dishes I can't recall. Sides of hot chili oil accompanied some of the dishes and was a great added complement. The consensus with all is that this destination is a keeper for the times you're looking for a hearty bowl of soup, noodles and more. We also opted for the tea eggs, equally lovely. If you come: Visa/Mastercard only, no American Express. Ample street parking in the neighborhood but nothing dedicated for just the restaurant. RATING: 8.5/10 - Calan Beef Noodle Calan offers a great big bowl of noodles for a very reasonable price. Each time I've ordered, I've had leftovers for lunch the next day. You get to personalize your order with your choice of noodles and sauce, but the funnest part is you then get to watch them pull the noodles. They're fresh with every order! I've tried the Hand Pulled Noodle with Stir-fried Chicken and Peppers and the Stir-fried Beef Hand Pulled Noodles. They're similar dishes slathered in sauce instead of dunked in broth. The beef dish is covered in a flavourful szechuan sauce (leaves a slight burn on the tongue), while the chicken dish was soaked in a curry sauce. Both hit the spot, but I'd have to give the edge to the beef. Calan is perfect if you're looking for a quick stop in (when time permits) or an easy pick up. Saw a post talking about this place on Instagram so I decided to try it out. I ordered the braised beef soup and asked for thin noodles instead of thick noodles. However, they gave me both thin noodles and thick noodles in the soup. I barely touched my soup and went to ask for another one upon realizing this mistake. When they brought my new soup out it was the same one they gave me before and they had just pulled some of the thick noodles out by hand and served it again. Is it just me or is that not normal for a restaurant? I was under the impression that if they got your order wrong they would simply bring you a new one, especially if you barely touched the one they got wrong. Anyway, I thought the soup was ok. The broth was delicious, the beef was very tender and good, but I thought that the taste of the noodles almost ruined the entire dish. Something about the noodles, whether it was the thickness, texture, or taste, just threw off the entire dish unlike any soup I've had at a Chinese Restaurant. The broth in the braised beef soup could be a meal unto itself! It's delicious. The flavour of the broth is deep and well developed...not that thin broth you find elsewhere. You can choose your spice level and the hand pulled noodles are so tasty! They have a nice snap to them when you bite them. The beef melted in our mouths and was also flavourful and delicious!
