Not knowing what to expect really, I knew I'd be open to the lecture part of the workshop but had no intention to participate in the physical exercises, as most people, I feared looking awkward performing the exercises in front of people I didn't know. It was Joy's emphasis that anyone taking the workshop feel safe and was in a safe environment that made me rethink my decision, which eventually put me in the mindset I needed to be in and feel in order to engage in the class, freely. That was a significant reason I retained the information I learned and shared with my family and my manager at work. This workshop opened my eyes and mind to a lot of scenarios I never thought about and am now aware of. It also gave me a good feeling that I was learning self-defense techniques she learned as a police office. It left such an impact on me that I find myself automatically observing my surroundings wherever I go. I realized people I work with would benefit from this class, as well, so the company I work for signed my department up to take Joy's self-defense workshop, in October. I purchased a black LE and also took the class since I am not experienced with firearms nor am I comfortable to own one. Yet with a Byrna, it's less intimidating to use with far less legal ramifications, especially living in CA. Unfortunately the San Diego range intro class I took was not informative enough for me due to my lack of experience. I kept looking for other options through the Byrna website and found 'Peace of Defense' by my sister in WLV. I called and spoke to Hezi and then set up a demo to bring my LE. Hezi was so calm and clear in his instruction all throughout, and he was very patient with our at times repetitive questions. I got to shoot in the Bryna demo area and felt comfortable with Hezi's reminders as I prepared and began to use launcher. My sister was also so impressed that she purchased the new CL to add to her weapon collection and has already arranged private and group classes with Hezi for firearms. I inquired if Hezi had a laser in stock and he did so I purchased and he nicely calibrated it for my LE. This was a major reason I chose to try out Level 3. A bit over a year later, kempo class has become an integral, invaluable part of my weekly routine. The exercise and practical self-defense lessons were things I was expecting, and have paid off in spades, but so too have the unexpected benefits of fun, stress relief after a long day at work, and new friendships. And you couldn't ask for a more down-to-earth, encouraging, respectful teacher than Sensei Perlman. Tang So Do is a Korean style Martial Arts but this school is no different, the values, tradition, culture and patriotism is integrated in the lessons they teach. Yes, I too learned this way at Shotokan, an Okinawan Karate and has similar instructional styles and practices, that dates back centuries. I've never seen Christian so respectful, measured and focused during his lessons here, he is attentive, laser focused and seems to be breathing and absorbing every aspect of GM Flame's instruction. During my visit, the classroom was full of students, different belt levels and skills but the most important here, is its inclusivity and highly- interactive styles of teaching. The Black Belts are also actively supporting the instruction but having them engage each other in sparring and hand to hand takedowns was enlightening and inspiring to watch. Meanwhile, I hope that they find a better and bigger landscape to teach these skills and practices to our children, they need a bigger space to be able to comprehensively inculcate the skills and talents this school is trying to articulate. Overall, I had fun and watching them engage each other, took me back to my old Shotokan days, where I would do the same routines and still enjoys watching the weapons being used and the tactics that built personal values and self-confidence of our children.
