Did a trial here for my kid. He tried out their competition class for teens. Some places won't allow non-members to try out their competition class as it is by invite only. My kid competes regularly. This location was very accommodating, which I appreciated. Upon arriving, they give you a loaner gi so no need to bring your own. The facility is very nice, split into two large mat areas with giant windows on the end with great views. They told me they just started their comp class so now is the time to join if you are in the area. My kid didn't get serious until his first competition. It kind of sets a goal for them so they don't just go through the motion. Met some nice parents in the process, I would definitely recommend trying them out if you are interested. read more

I'm compelled to post this review to help other parents considering the Jiu-Jitsu program at Gracie Barra in Simi Valley. I encourage parents to please read the fine print, no matter how appealing the sales pitch. I signed my son up in early 2025. At first, the program seemed great. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu art form taught at Gracie Barra in Simi Valley is excellent, and the coaches there are motivating, patient, and great with kids, no doubt this was our positive experience. What I didn't appreciate was the sales pitch and, more importantly, the cancellation process. We were told the membership was month-to-month, with no contract, and that we could cancel anytime. Based on that, we bought gear and enrolled our excited son. Over about half a year, he attended roughly 8 classes. Due to family circumstances, including welcoming a newborn in December 2025, we could attend only about once a week at a stretch. We take full responsibility for this. When we asked to cancel, management said makeup classes weren't possible. We decided it wasn't financially practical to pay full monthly fees for something we couldn't fully use. That's when the issues began. Only one staff member could process cancellations, and we had to wait nearly two weeks to meet with them. The meeting became an almost hour-long sales pitch to stay enrolled. A temporary "pause" offered 20% off $250 for three months, but during the pause our son wouldn't be able to attend any classes. We declined. Then we learned there was a cancellation clause requiring two extra months of payments--contradicting the signup claim of no contract. We ended up paying October, November, and December 2025, even though we didn't use the classes, effectively paying to exit a "no-contract" arrangement. We paid the fees and since then only receive texts trying to re-enroll, which we've declined. As business owners, we value ethical customer relationships and flexibility for families under economic pressure and what we received from Gracie, Simi Valley was quite the opposite. This review isn't to bash anyone or name names. (As you can tell in the review we didn't mention anyone by name). It's awareness for parents considering Gracie Barra Simi Valley: please read the fine print carefully, including Tablet terms so gracefully handed to you for quick signatures. A two-month cancellation requirement or a discounted freeze that blocks class usage are risks I wish we had foreseen. My aim is to warn hardworking families to read the fine print before signing up, not to attack or deter. The economy is tight right now, especially for middle-class working families in California, where the cost of living has risen considerably. Instances like this don't help when companies squeeze every dollar without fully considering the hardworking parent/s. Blessings to all. read more

We came in to meet the team & my son sat quietly watching the class while we talked details. By the end of the intro appt, he was eager to jump in. We've been here for about 4 months now & he's been doing great! The staff friendly & helpful. The instructors are fun & super engaging for the younger ones. I recently had a very disappointing experience with Gracie Barra. When I signed up, I was never informed about a 60-day cancellation notice or that I would still be charged for those 60 days after canceling. The manager later claimed that she did mention the 60-day cancellation notice, but I can say with certainty that if I had known I would be charged the full amount for 60 days, I absolutely would have taken note of that. It's not something I would have overlooked. It wasn't until the required cancellation meeting that I was told about the 60-day notice. Make sure you schedule and attend your cancellation meeting as soon as possible, because every day you delay means more money in their pocket. Bottom line: BEWARE and read ALL the fine print. They also told me they would "see about giving me a discount," but that never happened. I had clearly explained that finances were tight, which was the main reason for canceling and that I wouldn't be able to re-enroll until next year. Despite that, they still charged the full amount. "Being charged $500.00 plus a cancellation fee is a significant loss for me, especially given my situation." What's especially disappointing is that I truly respect the coaches and the quality of instruction. The staff on the mats are wonderful, caring, and dedicated to the students. Unfortunately, the business side feels focused more on money than on fairness or integrity. I would never return or recommend them because of how this was handled. I expected more honesty and compassion from an organization that presents itself as family oriented. I do take full responsibility for not reading all the fine print. I highly recommend avoiding distractions (like watching your child on the mat for the first time) as your listening to their pitch and signing their contract. read more

I was initially a little worried about his transition to a sport he had no experience or knowledge in but the professors and coaches have done an amazing job at making my son feel welcome and confident! Life (and Covid) got in the way and I couldn't make it out until a month ago. I'm kicking myself that I didn't do it sooner! Everyone at GBSV couldn't possibly be nicer, more welcoming, more accommodating, or more supportive. I'm an older guy, almost 60, and they made me feel like family from my first minute there. Coach Luis, Coach Jason, Professor Andre, Duda, everyone ... you're amazing and I love my time there. The owners and staff have done a superb job of building a culture where not only do they take care of everyone and help guide them on their jujitsu journey but the other students are just as helpful and supportive. I drove by this facility one day after shopping in the plaza. I wanted my son to get involved in Martial Arts. Was so happy that it was so close. Called right away and Duda picked up the phone. Se was so pleasant and inviting. We took our first trial class and my Son fell in love. Not only the sport itself he liked but having great coaches makes a huge difference. Every single one of them are so loving towards each child and make sure they feel comfortable on the mat. They take time to talk to parents, if need be and also with kids. This school literally has something for everyone. It's not just a typical franchise school. Professors Andre and Luis are incredible teachers, with passion, humor, warmth, and some interesting life lesson or observation to offer after every class. It makes perfect sense to me, because they are both barred lawyers who decided that the office life wasn't their style, so everyone at the school gets to benefit from their sensitivity and intelligence. And believe me, they are both very attentive to the little important details of things. Besides that, what I love about the school is the culture. Everyone has been really kind, supportive and friendly since I joined a few months back, even as I've struggled to shake off the rust and discouragement, as it's been 10 years since I've practiced. There are also some very tough colored belts with some great technical skills to roll with, very avid competitors, but literally no one seems to have a chip on their shoulder, which is rare for any martial arts school. The kids classes are always stacked with teachers, too, so they make sure the kids are safe, which is incredibly important. You can almost always count on at least 3 instructors per kids class, and there are often more. Bottom line: if you're looking for a BJJ school to call home, or even just interested in trying out the fastest growing, most accessible and arguably most effective martial art in the world in a "family friendly" environment, this school is by far your best bet in both the Conejo and Simi Valleys. read more
