I feel remised hat I never previously wrote a review. My wife and I married I married in Key West back in 2011 and had our wedding cake from here. It was AMAZING! Half was Margarita cake with coconut filling and the other half was marble with fudge filling. To this day, people talk about how it was the best wedding cake they've ever had. Planning a destination wedding, I really didn't have much to go on besides a whim. I was looking at two places, which both had equally great reviews AND their prices weren't that far off. It was hard. But I went with Cakes by Karol solely based on a frosting option that she had over the other place. Having said that though, we were NOT disappointed! I didn't ask for anything too difficult so I felt pretty confident it would turn out ok, when in fact it turned out great! The cake was simple but pretty and it was delicious! We ordered the almond cake with the almond buttercream topped with toasted coconut - going for that whole 'Almond Joy' feel. Even with all that almond flavoring it was not overpowering and the cake was the perfect moistness. It was so good and the best choice that we could've made by chance. :) read more

Service: Wedding cake Cake: The bake was absolutely beautiful. Just as it looked in the picture, but better in person! I ordered a 2 tier of almond joy and key lime, and they were both delicious. The cake was moist and flavorful, but not overly sugary as many frosting and fillings are. Convenience: Ordering a cake with Carol was very easy. I was able to do everything remotely with great ease. Carol was very responsive and answered my MANY MANY questions in a timely fashion. Customer service: WONDERFUL! Carol text me the day of, to let me know that the flowers from the baker were not enough to make it look like the photo. Since I was not able to coordinate more flowers in time, she offered to use some leftovers she had from another cake and it looked beautiful! Ordered a small cake for our wedding in Key West. Went with this business due to all the reviews. Ordering process was simple. Picked up the cake, and it was beautiful. We ordered the white chocolate cake with strawberry filling and buttercream frosting. Unfortunately, the cake tasted like a spoonful of sugar. There was no flavor. The strawberry filling had dots of buttercream filling in it, which gave it a weird texture. I was very disappointed. Everyone agreed the cake was pure sugar. No one took more than one bite. We passed this place a hundred times... So when my boyfriend said 'I need cake' I said I know this place... The cupcakes are done so well. Not that strange dry cake you often get in places like this. The frosting isn't overwhelming, or so sweet you won't eat it all. We had red velvet and chocolate along with some home made vanilla ice cream. Just perfect! Our wedding cake was to die for. It was a rum cake, double layered with raspberry and coconut custard. The outside was chocolate custard with different colored edible sea shells. The entire cake was done VEGAN! Our guests could not believe it! It was a daunting task since it was a destination wedding and our previous arrangements fell through, but Anna was so incredibly patient with me and took the order although the wedding was only two weeks away. Cakes by Karol did our wedding cakes for our July 9, 2011 destination wedding in Key West. (We live in Texas) Karol is easy to work with and good at easing your mind when you are not sure exactly what you want. We had set up a visit a year ago for a tasting. We didn't realize that the bakery was closed on Monday, which was the only day that we could do it. I told Karol about this. She baked up some samples and sent fillings along with them, over to our hotel on her day off. And they were sooooo good. Hard to choose the two we needed. But we did. We chose red velvet with cream cheese filling and a vanilla with a strawberry filling. The cakes arrived on time and were gorgeous. They tasted exactly as we remembered, if not better. I used these people because of a recommendation from a restaurant, and their cupcakes were really good. This was for an event and they presented nicely. Sadly, though, they are rarely open to walk in traffic when you just gotta have a cupcake, and they really don't have anything there to sell anyway, if they were open to walk-in traffic. I think they're shooting themselves in the foot with this business plan, since now they have a more easily accessible Old Town location. I feel they deserve 5 stars for quality of what they did for me. However, since they've made it impossible to buy from them since, I knocked a few stars off. read more

I don't know how her cupcakes taste, but we did choose her to do our wedding cake. As this was a destination wedding, of the 4 bakeries we researched on Key West, we thought Cakes by Karol had the best variety of flavors, as well as the experience in doing the design we chose (I wanted a sandcastle-looking wedding cake). Well after a lot of back-and-forth, via email and phone, there got to be a bit of confusion on how it should look, so the color was not exactly as we expected. That could have been overlooked, excepted the flavors came out waayy too sweet. Even my guests, who had a choice between rum cake with strawberry filling or marble cake with dulce de leche filling, barely had 2 bites of their cake. And this wasn't just 1 or 2 guests, but almost 20 guests. (And trust me, they were hungry, as the buffet meant for 25 guests was completely gone). As the bride I barely got the chance to taste much food, but I did notice the vanilla buttercream icing was too sweet. For those that love it very sweet, then this is for you. I do give them credit for making a beautiful design on our sandcastle cake, even though after spending $500 it should have been correct. However, as for taste, I should have convinced my mom, who bakes as a hobby, to make my wedding cake in Key West. read more

I had a Key West Wedding on 2/17/2012 and orderd a cake one month in advance from Cakes by Karol. It was a simple vanila one tier cake with white roses. The filling I chose was custard and strawberries. The cake was horrible. It tasted old and the frosting was not fondant. It ruined dessert for everyone and I was very upset I paid $65 for that crap. The cake was hard and it was topped with nasty white frosting and laffy taffy of some sort. To top it off she put carnations on the cake instead of roses. Carnations are the cockaroaches of flowers in my opinion. I will never order from that bakery again. I Really wish I would have done a tasting prior to ordering. read more
