If I can give a negative star review, I would definitely give this place a -5 star. We got a groupon from a friend and tried to place our order several times on the phone and email as well. Finally got a reply from them, the lady told me that we can pick up our order at another location a week after we placed our order by noon. Now I'm at the pick up location @3pm and they said they don't have my cakes!!!! So we got no cakes for our BBQ party!!! Nice!!!!Tried to call their NUMBER several times, nobody picked up!!! Surprise surprise!!!! Dear owner, if you can't do what you promised. Please don't even offer multiple location pick up!!!!! For those who are trying to get the deal off Groupon, please be aware!!!! One star is too high for this business, but I had to pick something so I could write a review. This is the first negative review I have ever written for a business. It's not really my thing to go online and bash a business, but if my effort can save someone else from having their money ripped off by these people, then my time will be well spent. I signed my son up for a week of baking camp with Caked Up this past summer. It seemed ideal because the location was at a school a couple of minutes from my home. I paid $320 for the camp. When the first day of camp arrived I took my son to the location and was puzzled to find out that there was no baking camp happening at the advertised location. I called the phone number on the camp brochure. The person who answered said that the camp had been switched to a location that would have taken 45 minutes to get to during rush hour traffic. Since we had no notice of this change and the new dynamic conflicted with other things that were scheduled for that week, I asked for a refund for the camp. I would never have signed my son up for this camp if I had known it was going to be so far away. The person on the phone said they would contact me at the end of the day. She did not. I left phone messages and sent emails to the business to proceed with getting a refund for the camp. They never responded. I disputed the charge with my credit card company. Today, I received a letter from the credit card company recharging me for the camp indicating that this business is saying that they "sell baked goods and charge the customer before delivery." So, from the paperwork I have, it seems like they are lying about the transaction. I will now have to resubmit the camp brochure and all the email correspondence to get my money back. These people should not be able to use credit card machines. It lends their business a legitimacy that they do not deserve. I have never, NEVER dealt with such dishonest people. Save your money and the aggravation and find another business for your baking or baking camp needs. read more

I placed an order, paid, and received a confirmation, but did not receive the order, or any response the day of, and day after with at least 5 calls and emails to them. Horrible way to run a business. I will slam it on any review site that I can and I hope they go out of business. read more

I had my son's first birthday at Kidville, and Kidville works with Caked Up, so I found out about this bakery through Kidville. I requested a lion cake. They sent me a few different images, and I picked up. And requested some modifications (sent them images I found online). They did an amazing job putting the cake together. Never received a confirmation, and didn't expect the cupcakes to arrive after the big snow storm came in and my street was not yet plowed. BUT to my surprise, the correct order of cupcakes came on time to my house. Valerie did the most fantastic cake for my granddaughter's Sweet 16 birthday party which was held in a bowling alley in Gaithersburg. We told her my granddaughter was a nut about all things British, and Val created a British flag made out of cupcakes! The cupcakes were delish, a couple of different flavors; she lined them up, and did the flag design topping over all. The convenience was that there was no cake to cut - the teens and guests just pulled off their cupcake in its individual wrapper. I never saw cupcakes disappear so quickly! The bowling alley manager was very impressed and took her aside to discuss a business arrangement with her, since he hosts a lot of parties at the bowling alley and caters the dinners and or snacks/pizza but could use the services of someone who could offer special occasion pastries, etc. I would use her again and again.. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Doesn't listen to what the customer wants and then tells you that you said something completely different. I called Valerie who is the owner of Caked Up and told her exactly what I wanted and probably repeated myself about 20 times to make sure she understood what it was that I wanted. I wanted a back ground color and I wanted another color to be make "21" I did NOT want a 2 and 1. I wanted enough to have so in the middle was "21" with the back ground cupcakes to fill in the space. She said she DID understand. I told her if she needs to make more cupcakes to complete the design I wanted to just let me know but that it was alright to do so. I asked her if she could layout the cupcakes after she made the 2 dozen and put the design together if it didn't make the design then she could make more. I went to pick them up this morning and she only made me 2 dz and I told her that was not enough to make the design that I wanted and that I had given her permission to make more and why didn't she call me or just make more. She said that I wanted a 2 and a 1 and I told her that I clearly did NOT want that and I went over it with her about 20 times and if she didn't understand then she should have clarified it with me. I called her a few times in fact and at anyone of those times I called I went over it again and again exactly what I wanted. She had many opportunities to clarify it with me if she didn't understand then she should have asked me. Also at first she thought I wanted "each" cupcake to have the design "21" and that would be an extra cost of $10.00. I told her NO I just wanted enough cupcakes to have the back ground be white and the "21" be hot pink. I asked her when she made the 2 dz if she could lay them out on her counter and see if it was enough to have the back ground and the "21" stand out. She said she would lay them out and let me know if I needed more. This morning she said that she told me that would be the extra 10.00 charge. The only time she mentioned the extra charge was when she thought I wanted a design on "each" cupcake. she never said anything about the charge after I told her I didn't want each cupcake decorated. I could have ordered them from another bakery but she sounded so nice on the phone. My daughter wanted to cancel the order and said we could just get the cupcakes at the Giant, which is what we should have done. It would have been a lot cheaper. After I left picking up the cupcakes I ran around to a few Giants and other stores to see if I could get more but the giant didn't have what we needed as it would not have gone with the ones I bought from Valerie so my daughter did NOT get to do what she had wanted to do for her best friend who is turning "21". Also I told her that one of the cupcakes leaned over on it's side and she said that was not her fault. I know it's not her fault but GOOD customer service would have been to say she would give me another one or to be sympathetic but she was very rude. When I called her up and said how disappointed I was she was very rude and had ZERO customer service skills. She should have said she was so sorry and to give me 2 dz more cupcakes to help out but she insisted that I said I wanted a 2 and 1 which I did not say and repeatedly said that I did NOT want that. I do not usually take the time to write a review but I felt it was necessary because of her attitude and how rude she was on not trying to help me out and fixing the situation but in being confrontational with me and saying that I was wrong. I don't even know what the cupcakes taste like as I gave them to my daughter in a bag to give to her friend just the way she gave them to me and not how I wanted them to look. Valerie is amazing! She has done all of my family's events for years. The things she makes are always delicious. I love the various cake & cupcake decorations she is capable of doing. By far, she is the most talented baker I've ever met. As an added bonus, her boyfriend does full meal catering. My father's 70th was completely catered by the both of them several years ago. Everyone is still talking about the ribs.I wouldn't have anyone else but Valerie do my events. read more

I ordered a dozen cupcakes from Caked Up through Groupon in December 2013. I thought I'd give it a try since it sounded like a good deal on Groupon. Boy that was a mistake. The proprietor of this cupcake shop (Valerie) promised to have my order ready at a certain hour and day. Well, when I went to pick up my dozen cupcakes during the hours she said they'd be ready, they were not. Caked Up does not have retail stores of their own. The proprietor, Valerie, has her products placed at certain stores in the DC metropolitan area and the stores give her a shelf for refrigeration. I went to one of these stores for my cupcakes (called Potomac Adventist Book and Health Food Store (in Silver Spring, MD) at the time that I was supposed to for pick-up, but the food store staff said that my cupcakes were not delivered by Caked Up. I was quite disappointed, obviously. The Caked Up owner Valerie totally dropped the ball and failed to have my order ready in the hours she said she would. And when I spoke to the Potomac Adventist staff, who have worked with Caked Up for product placement in their store, she mentioned to me that this wasn't the first time Caked Up failed to deliver on their cake orders. Valerie, if you're reading my review, take it seriously. Your professional reputation is on the line. I gave you my telephone when we spoke on the phone (I also wrote you a couple of email messages with my contact info, which you never responded to when I found out that you missed my order.). If you weren't going to meet the deadline, you should have called to let me know that you were not going to meet the deadline. It would have been disappointing, but that's better than wasting my time. Totally unprofessional. I've told others that I know to never order cakes and cupcakes from your bakery. From the sound of other reviewers on Yelp, it sounds like there are several others who are pissed off. Finally, I tasted your cupcakes (that arrived 4 days late). They weren't good. The cupcakes were dry and they tasted similar to the cupcakes that I can get from Safeway's bakery department. The ingredients you used tasted of low quality. I'm writing this review to tell my experience with Valerie Smith who is the owner of this bakery caked up. She is the most rudest business woman I have ever had to deal with. She doesn't know how to treat customers with respect. She had made two deliveries to me and both of them were not as it was originally committed. She has really poor communication skills. I needed to order a dozen cupcakes for Mother's Day and she just did not respond to any of my emails and phone calls about the questions that I had before placing the order and even after placing the order. She called me after I have been down to her kitchen and talk to the owner of the kitchen that she's renting. He had called her immediately after I left and then she called me and start accusing me that why am I going around and trying to track her down. She started yelling at me and telling me to stop trying to track her down. She kept saying her policy is to respond in 48 hours but her voicemail also says that if your order is for this weekend she will respond immediately. She complained that I'm being difficult and she's accommodating me a lot when in fact she had kept changing delivery plans. I will not recommend this business to anybody and this is my first time reviewing any local business because I am that frustrated.
