This shop offers cake and beverages (confusingly at separate counters, though perhaps this speeds service during busy times). I discovered a robust cake slice selection. They had a couple of gluten free cookies of some sort, not much to satisfy anyone trying to avoid eggs or dairy. With that caveat in mind, the luscious texture of the slice I got delivered as expected, and I was glad I selected a seasonal apple flavor. You can get a slice sampler, as well as whole cakes if you order ahead.

This was my first afternoon tea experience, and I absolutely loved it! The interior is super cute and very warm and inviting. Steph served us, and she was kind, friendly, and attentive to us. The masala chai and jasmine green tea were delicious, and we were offered sugar cubes and oat milk with it. The assortment of sweet treats and savory bites were amazing. My favorite was the strawberry pavlova! I ended up purchasing more of it to take home.

So I purchased a 4inch UVA cake for my son. Let me start with the positive. I got the Golden Vanilla with Buttercream and it is absolutely delicious. I'm not an expert baker but (I think) this is French buttercream which I love. The vanilla cake had a amazing vanilla taste and while I do see why some would consider it dry, I find this true of most vanilla cakes unless the bakery brushes on simple syrup and I think it makes it too sweet. So cake and cake quality are 5/5 so why the 4/5? 2 reasons: price. For the 4 inch cake which says it feeds 2-3, for me I think this feeds 2 normal people. So that is 20 dollars per serving. I also paid extra for it to say Happy Birthday Anthony and from the picture you can see it doesn't. I assume it because it couldn't fit (it is such a small cake) but I didn't get a call to discuss if I still wanted the cancel the writing or if I was okay with substitution. I would have declined it since I didn't like it and just asked for the logo that was included. If it was free or the cake itself wasn't 40 dollars, again, I wouldn't have an issue but with what I'm paying for cake and paying extra for the writing, it was disappointing.

Since I can't respond directly to the owner, here it is. Duncan Hines was just an example that I have stayed away from for years. I love good dessert, not below average. Yes, that is subjective, just like everything in life pretty much about food. Your cake was as dry as the dessert. Plus ignoring customers who are standing there waiting to be served doesn't make you look good. We saw a person come, wait for a minute or two and leave, all without being greeted or served. Is that what you pride yourselves on? Honestly best of luck to you, hopefully this poor experience was just a one off but it was absolutely terrible.

The storefront is super cute, and I love how the cakes are displayed and that they are in slice form. We ordered the $24 5 slice graduation deal, and got the Strawberry Belle, Rainbow Carrot, Golden Vanilla, Classic Chocolate, and Wahoo Stout. The lady who put together our cake slices was very friendly and accommodating. While all of the slices had good flavor, the cakes were all very dry. The only one that I really liked was the Strawberry Belle, which was pretty moist because it was soaked with some type of syrup, but parts of the cake that weren't soaked were dry. The Classic Chocolate was probably moister than the other three, but was still on the dry side, and the rest of the cakes were super dry, with the Golden Vanilla being the driest. I thought the frostings themselves tasted good for all the cakes. I was debating whether to give this place 3 or 4 stars, but ultimately decided on 4 stars because although the cakes were dry, I liked the flavors and how the slices were presented, and the shop was quite cute. I wouldn't be opposed to trying this place again in the future to see if it was just an off day, but it isn't a place I feel inclined to come back to.

Cake Bloom is an aesthetic dessert shop on Main Street. Their desserts are very pretty and not too sweet, but are somewhat overpriced. The decor in the store is very pastel and has a very Instagram aesthetic. They also offer various knick-knacks for purchase. Street parking is available in front of the store but can be difficult to find.

This charming shop not only sells beautiful desserts, but a variety of unique kitchenware, and gifts that will surely add to the radiance of a home. As the name suggests, they are known for their artisan cakes, sold in the form of small rectangular slices. Each slice presents as a work of art, almost too beautiful to dig a fork into. My friends and I shared the 5 slice sampler. Though the slices look small, we struggled to finish our portion. We chose to sample the lemon, carrot cake, golden vanilla, strawberry, and violet chocolate. The flavor of each slice was so unique and like no cake we had tried before. The cake itself was perfectly moist, slightly crumbly and light. Some of the slices had extra spices and mix-ins that elevated the flavors, packing distinct, yet light flavors into each bite. The Violet chocolate seemed to have actual flower mixed into the cake base and frosting. My favorites were the vanilla, the strawberry, and the lemon slices. The shop owner and baker was so sweet throughout the visit. We truly got the sense that she loves creating beautiful desserts that bring wonder and delight to others. Cake Bloom is a must-visit for cake lovers and dessert lovers alike! I promise you won't leave without a smile of bliss.

This is seriously one of the coolest places to open in Charlottesville in quite a while. I know the owners have been making cakes for a bit, but the physical space is an awesome place to visit, whether you're commissioning a cake for a special occasion or simply a fan of sweet treats! Everything we had was delicious, and we had EIGHT pieces of cake. The 8-cake flight is a steal, with 8 full slices for $40. Our favorites were the Seasonal Citrus (lemon and blueberry), the carrot cake, and the limited-time Lady Grey! Seriously - you have to go in this Spring to try that one. The tea-flavored cake pairs perfectly with lavendar/lemon filling and buttercream frosting. I would eat this cake every day if I could. And the carrot is a classic, updated with delicious salted caramel frosting. But Cake Bloom is not just a cake bar, it's a "bubbles bar" as well. There were so many champagne options we were a bit overwhelmed, but the staff was very helpful and assisted us in choosing an excellent bottle for a reasonable price. We also had a pot of great coffee, essential for a brunch of cake and champagne! The rest of the menu looks delicious too! I can't wait to go back for a cookie tray and a milk flight. I didn't get a chance to try the lunch menu either, but I have heard wonderful things. I will absolutely be going back, and you should stop by too!

I've come twice now--once for a slice of cake and once for scrappy hour. The golden vanilla cake with ginger cookies n cream frosting was my favorite. Super moist and flavorful. Chocolate hazelnut: also good, as expected. Carrot cake: nothing special here. EVOO cake: my "scrap" was dry; not sure if this was a fluke. Overall, I feel like the slices are a bit overpriced for what you get, and the quality varies. The shop itself is cute --fun for happy hour!

I highly recommend the wine and cake pairing experience. Everything complemented each other perfectly. The cakes are high quality and quite creative. Just be careful about purchasing full bottles of wine. I paid about 2-3× as much for a bottle that would've cost less than $20 at Target.

Came here from Richmond for afternoon tea with a girlfriend and it was well worth the drive. They only do afternoon tea on specific weekends but this experience has prompted me to find a date to return to try their cake and wine pairings. The tea snacks were so delightful and I especially loved this experimental grasshopper tart that is not currently on their menu but I hope will be added after today. The service was friendly and the space itself is so lovely with great natural light and a cute shop at the entrance. Highly recommend this place. Wish it was closer to Richmond.

Cake Bloom is a cute cake shop to catch up with your gfs! You can have wine/champagne and have your cake too here :P They also have the cutest gifts and trinkets. The first time I stopped by was near when they were closing up shop so only a few flavors were left. The second time I came close to opening and had plenty of flavors to choose from. I like all the different flavor options but both times I visited the cake itself was dry...I was really hoping for a moist cake. The icing is good and the flavors themselves are tasty but the cake is too dry for me. A cute place to hang out and do a galentines (they had a tea set event going on!) though.

Susan at Cake Bloom made the most beautiful cake for my moms 60th birthday celebration. She was extremely responsive, and was able to accommodate this cake with just one week notice - Susan even delivered the cake to the restaurant we were having dinner at! Susan makes the best cakes, honestly. My wife and I went for a tasting, brought a few friends, and we all left with huge smiles on our faces. Susan uses many organic ingredients and has a strong sense of flavor combinations. There were a lot of options and we were happy to be able to choose different flavors for each tier. We ended up getting a lovely 3-tiered naked cake for our wedding and will be making some arrangements come anniversary time. read more

We contacted Cake Bloom for our wedding cake when we lost our original baker just a few weeks before our destination wedding in Napa. Susan replied quickly and luckily had availability. We ordered the Rainbow Carrot cake without ever tasting it and it was a fantastic choice. First of all, Susan is a very delightful & responsive person, to work with, and makes the most beautiful, delicious, fresh, and exquisite Wedding cakes, she is a true cake artist. For my Wedding I had a 4-tier pressed flower cake with a delicious vanilla Chantilly frosting. I chose to do a cake that was one part vanilla & one part chocolate. The vanilla and the chocolate cake had an incredible flavor. Both the vanilla & the chocolate cake had a fresh raspberry filling, and when put together with the taste of the vanilla Chantilly frosting & the edible flowers, well, it was just off the charts sensational. We celebrated my friend's 40th in Charlottesville last weekend and I had worked with Cake Bloom in advance to have a cake ordered and delivered to our airbnb. I listed my friend's favorite flavors and luckily they had a special flavor (Wahoo stout) available! We planned to have it be the last delivery of the day as we were on a winery tour and didn't know if the weather would be hot that day for a cake to sit outside. About 4 hours before we were expecting the cake, I got an email that it would be ready the next day! You can imagine the level of anxiety after a few glasses of wine! ;-) I quickly contacted them and we worked out the error and they were able to quickly bake and deliver the cake ON TIME! And EVERYONE loved and raved about the amazing cake. The birthday girl even said it was her second favorite cake (after her wedding cake)! Susan's rainbow carrot cake with sea salt caramel and cream cheese frosting is quite possibly the best cake I have ever had. We chose this cake for our wedding and could not have been happier. It was absolutely beautiful and tasted so good I can't even describe in words how good it is. Many of our guests told us it was the best wedding cake they had ever had. She uses organic ingredients and changes the flavors based on the season. My husband and I are already planning on ordering another one of her cakes for our first year anniversary. Reached out to Cake Bloom for my dad's 65th birthday. The experience was amazing, Susan answered all my questions and prepared the most amazing blueberry lemon cake for us! It was delivered to us in pristine condition and tasted AMAZING!!! We got a few of the little cake bites that she has as well, I think they're called bloomers just to have extra sweet bites for the party, the Guinness cake and the carrot was a HUGE hit for everyone at the BBQ. I usually just go to the grocery store for cakes but it was so nice to have someone like Susan make this birthday extra special for my dad. read more

Wow! I have sample tasted Cake bloom blackberry curd, raspberry velvet and carrot cake and experience of heavenly bliss is an understatement. Those cakes were freaking amazing! My taste buds were so happy with the fresh combination of the ingredients and at that point I was cake convert for rest of my every day. I have tasted every single flavor of each ingredient in the cake and all of them were light, fluffy and fresh and wanting me to want more. Fantastic and highly recommended! Cake Bloom did our wedding cake for 175 guests and a chocolate stout groom's cake that we served on Friday night. I can't say enough wonderful things about Cake Bloom and Susan!! Not only were both cakes delicious, but they were gorgeous. Susan's design for our cake was elegant and rustic at the same time, and she even sourced a redwood stump to display it on. Susan took the time to personalize every detail, from the flavors (rhubarb!) to the flowers (air plants, my husband's favorite)...it was so far from an "off the shelf" cake that you find at most bakeries. Everything was sourced from local organic farms (how amazing is that) and lovingly crafted into delicious cakes that our friends and family still rave about. I was lucky enough to book Susan for my wedding in San Francisco at The Cheese School. I had a basic vision of what I was looking for, but wasn't sure exactly what I wanted. Susan took my very remedial ideas and blossomed them into three GORGEOUS cakes, offering variety and an incredible visual display. Not only were the cakes just beautiful, they were delicious. I'm so glad that we chose Susan at Cake Bloom to make our wedding cake and cupcakes! We did the chocolate mocha (my favorite), the rainbow carrot cake (my husband's favorite), and the olive oil for our reception. We ordered a bit extra based on our guest count, but we had almost nothing to take home with us after - everyone loved it! Amazing! We contracted Susan to provide us with a cake to serve roughly 40 people at a baby shower last weekend in downtown Sonoma. The cake was beautiful, the price was perfect, and Susan was great to work with. We had multiple guests tell us how delicious the cake was. Cake Bloom is your Pinterest pins come to life, and deliciously. Susan really knows what she is doing and puts her baking first, while producing beautiful and creative cakes and desserts. We have used her for years for special events like birthdays and christenings and I hope to use her for my daughters' weddings (not too soon tho!) She will also make pretty and yummy mini cakes to give as a gift or for a small tea. Susan comes up with simple and sometimes unusual flavor combos that just work. She will even share her secrets for fillings (like rhubarb curd and boozy ganache) but I've never bothered making them because mine will probably never tastes as good as hers! Now that I'm thinking, she should put that curd in a jar and sell it with a spoon. Yum. But I think she mostly enjoys making the cakes. Very special. read more

What can I say other than fantastic all around! Susan's use of organic, local & seasonal ingredients & her knack for interesting & artful flavor combinations make for the best cake I have ever had. The first time that I tried her cakes I was struck by experiencing the nuances in flavor of each ingredient instead of just tasting an overwhelming amount of sugar. After attending many cake tastings for our wedding we knew as soon as we tasted Susan's cakes that our search was over. Her cake flavor combinations are so tasty, wonderful and subtle. Each bite will have you thinking about the different flavors/ingredients that went into it. Her cakes look as amazing as they taste. Simply on a different level than the others we tried. Our wedding guests loved all of her cakes (we had three flavors!). To top it off, Susan is professional, courteous, and a warm sweet person to work with. I can't recommend her enough! Susan's cakes are seriously the best cakes I've ever had in my entire life! Each different flavor is so simple and fresh. It's truly hard to pick a favorite, but for my rehearsal dinner before my wedding I ordered the Rainbow Carrot Cake with salted caramel and it was a hit! Not only are her cakes amazing, but Susan is so easy to work with and she definitely went above and beyond for us. Susan Williams and Cake Bloom truly are 'as good as it gets'. We did not want the typical chocolate or white wedding cake, nor did we want a frilly or overly sweet one. In the end we chose a lemon cake with lemon curd and 'naked' buttercream frosting, simply and gorgeously adorned with ranunculus. Susan brought the cake to the venue where we were having the wedding and added the flowers at the last minute, so they had that 'just picked' beauty and freshness. The cake itself was beyond scrumptious. There was not one thing about the cake or the service we got from Susan that I would have changed. A magical way to end our wedding meal read more

Founded in San Francisco, Cake Bloom founder, Susan Sweeney relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia in late 2019, before opening her first sister-owned brick-and-mortar bakery at 705 West main Street.t In January 2026 Cake Bloom moved locations to 120 10th Street to expand their production, event and workshop offerings. Cake Bloom has been featured in Brides, Refinery 29, Brit and Co, Gardenista, Style Me Pretty, 100 Layer Cake, Ruffled Blog, The School of Styling and Inspired By This, among others.

Meet the Business Owner: Susan W.

Owner Susan Sweeney began her culinary journey in Northern California where she spent fifteen years working in all facets of the food industry after graduating from culinary school. From private chef and catering work to marketing for an organic olive oil company, she honed her professional skills while discovering her passion for seasonality and the local food movement. In 2012 she launched Cake Bloom in San Francisco, where she baked all natural wedding cakes garnished with fresh florals from the Ferry Building Farmers' Market before relocating to Sonoma, where she drew inspiration and ingredients in Northern California's famous wine region. In early 2020, she got back to her southern roots moving to Charlottesville and launched a reimagined version of Cake Bloom, focusing on smaller scale birthday and event cakes in her fresh floral style-all available for local, home delivery.

Reunion has been a breath of fresh air - really good espresso drinks, pastries, and breads. To be 100% honest, Crucible's coffee is better, but their pastry selection is minuscule and they can feel a bit stuffy. Reunion's pastries are good, though I wish they had more French-inspired things like pain au chocolat, croissants, or even soft cinnamon rolls, but I feel they excel more at the breads side of baking. I got a mini sourdough loaf once and it was excellent! Service is always friendly and happy, and the shop itself is cute, but there isn't much space inside. I'm all for tables outside, but there's not much real estate there either, especially on a busy morning. I think a small adjustment to flow could make it easily sit a couple cafe tables inside without it feeling so crowded. I just miss the days of being able to hang out and have good coffee and snacks while doing some work on a laptop. Seems like most businesses would rather have you out the door instead. I have high standards for bakeries and cafes, and Reunion meets most of them. They're now my favorite place to go in the mornings in Staunton... if they're open. I would go there much more often if I could actually eat my breakfast there instead of having to get back in my car or sit in the blistering summer heat.

Cake Bloom's cakes have so much flavor and the textures are amazing. They are also very beautiful. I don't like cakes that have a bunch of fondant that's crazy colors and looks unreal. These cakes are amazingly beautiful with flowers on them. And the floral decorations are removed so easily without getting anything on the cake. Honestly, not sure I've ever had cakes this good. Cake Bloom makes beautiful cakes that are also delicious. Seems like that would be a no brainer, but it is actually really hard to find. I love Susan's clean, elegant, simple style.
