'The Only' bakery is one of 'the only' bakeries I would avoid when scouring the Nelson food scene…read more This place has many things going against it, irrespective of the goods available: it is just down the road from Nelson's coffee mecca Oso Negro, it is run by an old curt Eastern European woman, it is hidden and squeezed into the bottom floor of a residence, and the decor resembles that of a walk-in clinic. The Only is supposed to specialise in bagels, but the selection and presentation were poor. The bagels looked more like Russian bublicks, which are larger than North American bagels and are often oblong. I did not even want to spend $1.50 on one of these bland looking creations, and I think this was a good call after watching the one other customer eating a cheddar bagel. He looked unimpressed, and kind of disturbed. He kept looking at it and poking it, as though contemplating whether it was worth the caloric intake. I did, however, have an americano and a date square...both of which were just below average.

So on the chance, I phoned them and asked them to create from a selection of the best of the Charcuterie with a few baguettes and deliver them to my daughter nearby. Clare (the manager/owner) did us proud with a selection of wonderful cheeses, pates, sausages and baguettes plus a fois gras mousse than my daughter described as "EPIC" The result is my distant family think I am an OK Dad and Charcuterie Totoche are my new best friends. But the server who has tattoos seems to be unapologetic and impatient with my child with special needs. I was trying to minimize her episode of stimming. My child was lying on the floor beside our table. I was keeping an eye on her to avoid any accident. She could have been compassionate but started a scene instead of helping to suppressed what could have been a more controllable situation. I was told "if you want to run around, you and your daughter can go out. the hallway is big". My daughter wasn't even running. She was just calmly lying on the floor. We decided to leave quietly without finishing our food, paid full price. We were not raised to act in an unprofessional manner just like what this nasty lady did to us. No parent or child should be embarrased in public by people who lacks compassion. It's not an excuse she doesn't know my child situation. Kids will always be kids, regardless if they are normal or not. She should not be in this kind of business! She doesn't know how to take good care of your guests!
