La Havana 59 - Cuban Oxtail

Visited La Havana 59 for an early Mother's Day dinner because Rumba Cubana was super packed. The…read moreparking lot was pretty full, but there was no wait for a table. All the menus are tablets, and you can switch between English and Spanish. Frustratingly, there was no Cuban sandwich available on the dinner menu. We got an appetizer sampler to start. Most of it was fried foods, so it was decent. For an entree, I got the fish filet in garlic sauce. The fish was tender and the sauce was flavorful. I also tried the oxtail. Some of them were tender and other pieces were quite chewy. To finish the meal, I ordered a cortadito but got a cortado instead. You'd think a Cuban restaurant would know the difference.

The parking lot was packed so I expected there to be a wait but was pleasantly surprised when our party of 5 (plus a baby!) was seated right away. The place is lively and a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. There's a stage/dance floor in the middle so I can imagine it can turn kind of clubby later in the night. Interestingly, the menus are all tablets and while really cool at first, it got annoying when a couple of our menus started to glitch. High tech but also leaves more room for failure. The service was friendly though and decently quick. We ordered a few appetizers and they came out in a reasonable amount of time. We got a sampler, croquettas, and a tamal. Everything tasted great so I had high hopes for our entrees. I went with the Mother's Day Special Relleno (stuffed) Salmon. It was a little overcooked but still really tasty. I believe it was stuffed with some crab meat and cheese. I also really liked the sauce that covered it. My dad got oxtail and it was seasoned very well but the oxtail pieces were cooked inconsistently. Some were soft and came off the bone very easily while others were tough to the point I had to use my hands to gnaw the meat off the bone. Everyone else's dishes were pretty good too. All in all La Havana 59 seems like a solid Cuban spot. I'd come back.

What an excellent spot!…read more I've been here a few times - both for just drinks and most recently for dinner. The vibes here are excellent - the space is beautifully decorated, clean, and the outdoor patio is gorgeous, especially in the summertime. The cocktails are all extremely creative and delicious (although I do think a little on the weak side). The last time I was here was for a birthday dinner. We were a large party of 8 women, and all the staff was very accommodating towards us. The food/drinks came out quickly, and they even gave my friend a big ol' birthday celebration complete with a firework candle and a light-up sign. The food is pretty decent - Spanish and Hispanic mostly, with a Caribbean flair. Standouts were the coconut shrimp (which came on a clothes hanger), the steak and tostones, and the ropa vieja. The only real downside of Don Coqui is the price of everything. The bill (with a 20% tip added for a large party) was just shy of 600 dollars, and this was for a table of appetizers and cocktails. Also, the valet parking for 15 dollars is wild, especially when there is a free lot available mere steps away. if you're feeling a little bougie, this is a great spot to grab a drink and get some great photos!

Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly regarding Don Conqui. First, the location is spectacular…read morewith stunning views of upper Manhattan and the Hudson River. While there is valet parking at $15, we opted to park right outside the entrance in the Target parking lot. The location is truly special In the distance you can see the George Washington bridge and one feels like on vacation. When making reservations you can request an outdoor seat which is highly recommended if the weather is good. The only downside were the occasional jet skis buzzing close by. Also, the music outside was not as loud as inside and one can have a conversation without yelling. Enzo our server was very polite and attentive. Jay the manager came around to check on us a couple of times. The food ranged from ok to vey good. The rice in both entrees was a little dry and in need of a bit of seasoning. The dessert (coconut flan) was awesome in terms of presentation and taste. Despite the awesome location, good service, and generally good food, the bill was a little pricey for what we had. I would have given it another star. Even though it's located poor of the way, we will be back and recommend it.

Authentic Spanish cuisine from a family that takes pride and puts love into every dish. Starting…read morewith the bread, oil and olive course, next the beautiful salad. Then the appetizer- we had the shrimp with garlic sauce, the chorizo and the grilled octopus. All 3 as if we were in Spain. Entree's all were accompanied by vegetables rice and chips. We had the cod, red snapper and halibut. Then we split a chicken Piaya - the house specialty. Having had piaya in the past it seems to be overwhelming rice but this was not. Great balance of ingredients sauce flavor and rice. We tried a couple of the sauces on the side for the fish and while excellent- they were not necessary as the fish was excellent on its own. We also enjoyed a flan for dessert and cafe and cappuccino. Considering the amount of food we had and leftovers I thought the price was quite reasonable. All servers and matre di were dressed in formal black and white and the room was a formal dining area. Truly enjoyable. We'll be back!

It was a large salad. Very tasty. Could have been more chilled. It was cool at best. I ordered the Paella Marinera. It was huge. Definitely shareable. Came with a half lobster, muscles, clams, and squid. It was really tasty. I usually have a pretty big appetite, but I could not finish it. After dinner, we order the flan and the pumpkin cheesecake. Both were good. Service was excellent. Multiple people handling the table and very attended. I highly recommend. Well visit next time I'm in the area
