What a sweet spot this is! We split the Madone with a side salad paired with Happy Mountain Honeydew Kombucha... it was fantastic. Ever since we moved to Bellingham (5 years ago now) I have felt that downtown Bellingham lacked one thing particularly - a good, clean (as in not dirty, messy, gross), downtown coffee shop that was not part of a larger corporation. I like working on my laptop in coffee shops, but it is something I have mostly stopped doing in the last year or so because of the options. When the signs for Primer went up, I was hoping that it would work out. However the combination of limited seating and no WiFi (at least initially), plus the just OK coffee, dashed my hopes. Then I found Velo. I was a little leery at first. I'm not really a biker. I wasn't sure how the space would work with the balance between bike repair and cafe. My first coffee there was not great. But they have really won me over. Everyone who works there is wonderful. The place is clean (not to be underestimated), well lit, with soothing colors, and consistently good music. The coffee is excellent. The affogato particularly so. They offer good pastries. I particularly like the cookies. Also the meat and cheese plate is good. I've never tried any of the other food offerings. Going there has convinced me to start biking again. In fact Andrew (the owner/the person behind the bike repair counter) talked to me about my bike - a free hand me down from a cousin - and based on my opinion transformed it into the commuter bike I actually wanted, at a very affordable price. read more

Welp this place is everything I hoped for and more. Adorable set up, fantastic coffee, great service. The bartender showed me the bike repair area which is situated in a room with seating next to the counter. Very clean with nice photography. There is a good amount of outdoor seating where you can drink a glass of wine or beer from their great selection. You can get a dollar off beer or wine if you ride you bike on Thursday which is great. I will be here next Thursday to have a glass of wine and get my bike checked up on! First of all, the owners are lovely human beings, you walk in and feel welcomed. I've gone here twice now. Once just for coffee. I had an americano. The shots were perfect. The flavor was amazing. The second time I got a latte and the salad. The latte, again, shots poured beautifully and the milk was steamed perfectly. Not too hot and was very smooth. I drank every last drop. One of my new favorites. Very impressed with the service- fair prices, speedy, and accomodating. Their menu is great, a wide and fresh selection, everything looked good but I went with the hummus plate to share, as I wasn't very hungry. Hummus, tapenade, goat cheese, greens and crackers (they have gf crackers/bread upon request). Paired with a bitburger pilsner, it was a light but satisfying start to the day. Cafe Velo is a very welcoming, community-oriented business. The owners Kim and Andrew are quick to remember costumers' names, and seem to love bringing people together. Their cafe/bike repair business model is brilliant, too. Small repairs can often be done while you enjoy one of their signature sandwiches on the patio with the various doggos that frequent the joint. My favorite sandwich is the vegan Ventoux. We had just finished visiting the City Hall Museum and were on our way to the Lightcatcher Museum. On the way, we stopped here to split a sandwich and get a beer. We had an Alger on rosemary bread which was ham and Gruyere in a Panini press. They did not stint on the cheese nor the ham! Russ had a Trumper beer and I had a Portland cider. We sat outside on the dog friendly patio. The food was delicious. My cider was amazing. We started talking to some lovely natives with an old black Cairn girl named Xena. The interior was lovingly built and detailed by hand by the owner-operators, and it's flush with cafe pastels, blonde wood finish, and black&white floor tile. They'll listen and talk with you about travel, coffee, booze, bikes, and probably a bunch of other things worldly cats like to chat on. I love visiting Café Velo when I'm in Bellingham for a Chai latte and pastry. Kim and Andrew are the owners and friendly faces that greet you as you walk in the door. They have put a lot of hard work into creating an awesome spot with a great selection of drinks and a simple but tasty food menu. They have a small bike shop as well so you can enjoy a beer while your bike gets a tune up. How cool is that! My co-workers and I are super happy having Cafe Velo nearby. The coffee/snack/food/beer options are all top notch and served with a warm friendly touch. The space is modern and inviting, but placed neatly in one of our historic buildings. Of course, half the fun is that they offer bike repair. Great coffee spot. Very friendly without being cloying. Excellent coffee. Always playing video of old bike races so that's obviously cool. Just a solid place. It is owned by a wife and husband team and they are just great. You can often get your biked worked on while drinking VERY well made coffee which is a plus. The dont have a lot of parts for sale there but they can order you anything you like and install it for you. Their labor rate is excellent and they are very fair with calculating the time it takes. I now plan on buying all my parts HERE and having them install them rather than going to one of the other shops in town. Just a great experience. read more
