What a yummy way to begin our vacation in Bar Harbor! We stopped in for dinner on a Friday evening after checking into our hotel. We did not have to wait to be seated. I was happy with the variety of options available for the kids and for me (a vegetarian). I was also super geeked out that there was an appetizer on the kids' menu (I would later learn that this was a Maine thing...not so much in Ohio). My 2 year old was thrilled with her tray of fruits and veggies. It did not come with a dipping sauce, but our waiter brought her some ranch dip. My 7 year old ordered a hot dog, and he was fascinated by the flauta that it was wrapped in. I had the greens salad as an appetizer (delish) and the sweet potato quinoa cakes as my meal. They were good, but I would have liked more of the avocado lime purée on them. My only complaint is that our waiter never asked if we wanted anything other than our water. I ordered myself a coffee and an apple juice for my daughter upon ordering our meals, which he never delivered. We didn't complain, and he was a good server other than that. read more

This place was amazing, and so worth the wait! I am truly amazed at how fast the turnover time is for tables, and I realized it was because the food came out so quick. I ordered the Canadian Bacon Eggs Benedict and an Iced Chai with Almond Milk, and my order came out in literally 5 minutes. It was deicious and such a good price & portion ratio! Got there early. I ordered eggs Benedict with their special homemade sauce. It came with a smidge of sauce on each egg. I had overheard the next table complain so I also ordered extra sauce which eventually came (a bit late). When I got the check, they tacked on 1.50 for the extra sauce - but had never mentioned it to me. Not to mention - it wasn't all that special. Came for breakfast after watching the sun rise on Cadillac mountain. Cute place. Two of my kids had the French toast which they devoured and my other daughter made her own scramble which she loved. My wife had the monte christo sandwich that had a ham slice that was almost half inch thick. I had the burrito with sausage. It was awesome and I loved that they gave me enough guacamole to cover the entire burrito. Portions were huge and we definitely could have split some of the dishes. With every dish over $10 this was a pricey breakfast. My wife and I were disappointed with the coffee thinking we would get at least Duncan quality for the price. What an unexpected fantastic treat in Bar Harbor down a random alley, and one of the nicest servers ever. Turned down a random alley to find this place. Quite spacious and well decorated interior. Varied menu with some nice surprises like fried halloumi. Good mix of seafood and other meats for main entrees. Cocktails were also excellent. Among the appetizers the fried halloumi was excellent (Mainly because I haven't seen halloumi in many places - but I found the watermelon a bit odd). Cauliflower hummus was excellent as was the bread with other random spreads. Vegetables and mashed potatoes were actually my favorite parts of the entree. Halibut was the special for the day that I tried. It was good but a bit dry. Excellent aioli sauce though. There was this random Nacho dish that was an appetizer which was pretty boring compared to everything else. Biggest standout thing of the night was our server who was so genuinely nice to us. Was making jokes as well as describing the wine and fish very well to us and it all seemed very natural. Really made the experience great. My wife and visited for breakfast on a Thursday morning and it was very busy. We didn't have to wait for a table, luckily. The café was tucked away down a side street and away from some of the crowds and drama of Bar Harbor. The café exudes ambiance and you'll feel like you're in a library eating breakfast based upon all the bookcases and shelves of books. My wife ordered the cranberry French toast with a side fruit salad. I ordered the scramble with onions, peppers, and mushrooms. It came with roasted potatoes and toast. My wife enjoyed her 4 triangles of nicely dipped French toast but couldn't eat the fruit since the first couple of pieces she had tried tasted like the fruit had gone bad. Did we send it back? No. My scramble was good. As coffee snobs, we would say the coffee was good. The service was very good and friendly. Very attentive. The prices were very reasonable. Super disappointed to write this. Went to Cafe this Way many times over the years and loved it. However, I had not been back for several years since about 2015. Made it a special point to get there on this year's trip after not getting there last year. Raved about it before we got there. The location is nice, went early so there were ample tables, I believe they expanded their indoor / outdoor space. However, food was not good. Eggs meh at best, corned beef hash was basically inedible and how is that even possible? They didn't refill my blah coffee unless I flagged them and it wasn't crazy busy or anything. Just super sad.
