I love this little cafe! They have amazing coffee and pastries as well as some breakfast & sandwich varieties. There are a few places to sit up front and a few in the back, not more than 4 at a table space-wise. Service is always excellent. read more

I'm new to the area and have been systematically checking out all of the local coffee shops looking to find "home," and Cafe Oranje has hit the mark for this Dutch gal! I popped in this week to pick up a new supply of coffee beans, and to my surprise, they offer freshly roasted BULK BEANS here, which means NO WASTE! I am so happy to have found this option. I've been enjoying the coffee for a few days now and I'm happy with the flavour profile of their espresso blend, and am looking forward to trying other offerings on future visits. I was also delighted to find that they offer a large selection of planet-defending VEGAN food options. I will definitely be back to support this cafe as often as possible - it's always important to support our local businesses, but with COVID ongoing, it's now mission critical. Easy to award 5 stars to this place. If this place was where I lived I'm sure I'd be in all the time. It's situated on King St. in the international village in Hamilton. It's a nice cozy place which goes back a little distance for more seating than you may expect from when you first enter. It's very much a cafe, with specialty coffee, soups and sandwiches and many baked goods. A HUGE distinction about this place is the coffee is locally roasted, and the baked goods are also prepared locally - and naturally are very fresh. Naturally, the place also distinguishes itself by being a Dutch cafe, with virtually item being Dutch-based. I was at a two day training only a block away and decided to check it out. I saw the advertised lunch special for $10 which included coffee, and two lunch entrees. I opted for the soup and sandwich. The sandwich, which I'm happy to report is on the menu, was smoked pork, with goat cheese gouda and appelstroop (apple butter) on a dark rye - and then pressed. I'm sure it's already evident that these pair perfectly, and it's only that much better when you try it. The soup of the day was cauliflower and kale. That may sound healthy, but perhaps not much else; I'm happy to report that it was well-seasoned and had a great thick, creamy texture. The drip coffee was honestly the best I've had in recent memory. Being a sucker for date bars, I couldn't resist that either. Massive portion, and probably the best I've had. Day 2 I was back again and got the exact same thing. Soups of the day was different, but also a winner with a pumpkin-squash soup. This time there were four of us, and each was raving about the place. Very friendly and sincere staff too. Great value and quality. What's not to love? read more

Cafe Oranje is in an interesting spot in Hamilton. Parking kind of sucks and it's on a one way street so it makes it even a bit more difficult - but it is really so cute and so worth getting there in any way possible! Very cozy. The interior is clean and modern - nice design. A little bit of a Dutch vide going on. There are some sweets, pastries, vegan treats and other types of treats. They also have a bunch of different drinks from ice tea, chai, coffee and frappes. I opted for an iced coffee with almond milk (yes, they have milk alternatives) and a vegan nanaimo bar. The nanaimo bar was just the right amount of sweet and tasted very similar to non-vegan sweets! I loved it! The vanilla iced coffee with almond milk had a nice amount of sweetness and the coffee flavour was really tasty. I didn't stay in to eat, but there are a few seats to stay in, or you could work if you wanted! Not a lot of space but just enough for a little cafe. I wouldn't say this is the best cafe in Hamilton but it is definitely a contender. I do enjoy the vegan options and the alternative options - I feel like a lot of cafes are moving in this direction - glad Cafe Oranje joined in this movement. I'll definitely return to try more treats and some other types of drinks that aren't coffee related! read more

If this spot were a person, it's kind of like a sweet old Dutch woman met an NYC hipster and they fused into one person. Maybe that's a little insane, but I feel it's highly accurate. And I bet you'll agree. I've worked here a couple times (ideally at those two awesome spots at the front window, with the cheery orange stools and ample people-watching possibilities) and it's been lovely. Music isn't too loud or overwhelming, and there are plenty of outlets for our second selves - sorry, I mean our computers. There are some awesome vegan options for both lunch & dessert, and they have both almond milk and soy milk under the counter which is always a nice surprise. Just ask! (The soy milk was a little less smooth than other brands, but it didn't really ruin my coffee or anything.) Cafe Oranje is exactly why I'm proud of Hamilton's coffee scene. They clearly weren't afraid to change things up for the caffeinated crowds of Hamilton, and I'm so glad they're offering us this elegant & cheerful Dutch experience! read more

Great concept. I wanted this place to be great but it fell short. Coffee was good but the food was a disappointment. Kroketten heated up on grill? Stroopwaffles were a disappointment. Service was lacking. My wife's cappuccino seemed to be prioritized behind the five people that came in after us. Not worth the trip for a good coffee but if the food was better and more authentic I would reconsider. read more

I travel across the country year round and visit a lot of coffee shops. But I'll never come to this end of the province without going out of my way to visit cafe oranje. I love it. This is a coffee lovers coffee shop. Coffee is made with the pour over method or you can order the typical specialty coffees. Brewed or pulled to perfection. Lattes had good strong espresso and milk was steamed excellently with perfect microfoam and a flower drawn on top. Incredibly fresh and robust beans from various regions. I got to pick which region I wanted my beans from and there was a careful description of the different qualities of each region. They change them out regularly so it's always fresh. Service is polite and friendly, very quick and prices are cheap. A regular must-stop for those who like their coffee done right and can't tolerate the Tim hortons style fast food. read more

I really wanted to love this place. The decor is gorgeous! Unfortunately, the coffee was awful. The soy milk was, well, I'm not sure, maybe it was off? I had an iced soy latte, which I could not finish because of the taste. My husband had a cappuccino, which was very pretty but tasted very bad. The coffee beans were stored improperly which meant the coffee itself was stale. I wanted so much for Hamilton to have something nice, especially because it's right next door to an amazing bookstore, but this coffee shop is not it. Went in for just a coffee the past Sunday and the second i stepped in, more than just the coffee smelled good, tempted me to get their sweet treats but also they have amazing deals for their sandwiches, devoured the Van Gogh. I have been here so many times I cannot count. The coffee here is outstanding. I drink espresso -based coffee (Americano/cappuccino) and Cafe Oranje probably makes the best Americano in the city. I have had coffee at almost all of the other eminent coffee shops in Hamilton (I.e. Detour, Mulberry st) and Oranje definitely is on par or above. I have had high quality coffee in almost every major city in Canada (my job requires me to move) and if someone asked me for a recommendation in Hamilton I would say Cafe Oranje. Also, the prices are very reasonable. Finally, the staff are lovely and welcoming. Prices are very reasonable for top tier coffee and pastries. I also get the same sandwich every time. I believe it's the smoked meat, Apple stroop panini. It is a delicious salty-sweet sandwich that goes very well with coffee. I would not however, opt for their breakfast platter as its a little pricey for some hastily combined items. I am surprised by other less favourable reviews as this Cafe for me has been consistently above average to excellent. I must be missing what other reviewers are saying about this cafe or maybe I'm a bit more discerning than your average visitor. The coffee here is great. There's a great vibe from the staff and specialty coffees are poured perfectly with seemingly nothing shy of loving care. The food, however, left much to be desired. Sandwiches, while tasty, were half-filled and didn't feel worth it. Dutch pastries tasted as though they'd been sitting around a while. The small seating area felt cramped despite not being so; something just didn't feel right about this place. read more

One of the best coffee shops in Hamilton! The espresso here is amazing with beautiful latte art as a bonus. The staff was very friendly and the cafe had a good amount of seating. Delicious food and super friendly and accommodating staff. I will definitely come back when in town. The pork, Gouda, appelstroop sandwich was great! it was cold, one of the outlets did not work, and the floor in the back seating creaked a lot when people walked by to use the restroom. just don't draw or paint back there and you'll be okay. coffee wasn't great, but i've also had not had a good cup of coffee once here in hamilton or toronto. we had 3 sandwiches and they were also just okay, but not bad. read more
