Oh, and pretentious volunteer kids talking about social programs at the top of their voices from all of 6 inches away from me. I have nothing against Cafe Moustache as a whole. It's an adorable place that's reasonably priced and provides a cute locale to get shit done. But it's hard to get shit done when you have two people having a pissing contest about who helps other more and who's done more research on homelessness and fundraising for those affected by some kind of horrible thing while you're sitting at a communal table. Have that pissing contest outside, kiddos. Some of us need to get shit done and drink coffee and not listen to any of the words you have to say. read more

I had a terrific time at this cafe, learning to knit with Carrie and Deanna, eating quiche with broccoli, and a 20 oz. latte. I inquired about the number of shots, there were FOUR. Imagine, a coffee and yarn neophyte, on four shots, with knitting needles. Well, the quiche was terrific and filling, while fluffy. The latte was also delicious, and I was awake for the next twenty hours. Great room, nice coffee and quiche serving people, and plenty of room for Deanna's double-hump camel outside, that she tied next to the greyhound I almost stole. I get that it's fun and kitschy to give me a latte in a mug that says "Mom" on it, but really? The barrista I had was rude, my drink tasted a little muddy, and there were hipsters EVERYWHERE. Like, it reminded me of that scene in The Birds where all of the birds were just sitting there and the protagonist was trying to walk through them silently, as it felt like every single one of them looked up from their MacBook when I opened the door. Just tried Cafe Mustache for the first time. I didn't have any cash so I ordered a $6 latte (Black Pepper, Fig Vanilla anyone? ya it was awesome, and big) to get over the credit card minimum, but I hear their black coffee's pretty great too. Anyway, I was there on a Sunday afternoon and the place was fairly quiet. I was easily able to get a table for two. They rely on a lot of natural light during the day, I didn't notice many lamps of overhead lights on in the seating area. But overall everyone was pleasant, customers and staff alike, and my drink was good, atmosphere was ok, just not overly special. But I'm sure I'll be back with cash to grab a regular cup of coffee and that delicious latte. read more

Bar side: Came here for a friend of a friend's show. Great venue. Decent priced drinks and a friendly bartender. Easily accessible by public transit. Considering it was night, I didn't really experience the cafe side of things. Cafe side: my friend and I did go on that side for a bit to play a board game. I can imagine it is a nice spot during the day as well. Board games was the main reason my friend wanted me over. And I'd be remiss not to mention the clean bathrooms. I'm big on clean bathrooms. It is very nice to have a coffee shop in this area which has seen so much gentrification, yet no cafe? So, I am very happy that Cafe Mustache is here just a short walk from the California/Milwaukee Blue Line stop. Like most places between the blue-line stops from Division-Belmont these days, the place is overrun with hipsters. Thank goodness, I wore my onitsuka tigers. Now I am happy that the suburban kids come-hipsters have made Humboldt Park-Logan Square-and now even Polish Avondale more commercially diverse since they are great consumers of things I like! The coffee shop is run by super friendly folks and my latte came with what looked like a leaf on the foam - nice touch. The inside is cozy. Sort of like hanging out in a friend's apartment. Old sofas and little tables fill the space. Everything looks like it came from rummage sales. Cool. The shortcoming? This place has grown too small for its britches which is great, but when I visited on a Sunday afternoon the place was jam-packed. The problem with Wi-Fi is that you get the all-day-I-don't have wifi at home crowd (get a cell phone with a built in Wi-Fi hot-spot the next time you visit mom and dad in Lake Forest), and for a larger cafe it is no big deal, but for a "cozy" cafe the $2.00 drink/4 hours of free Internet folks threaten to fill the place all day. I have not been back but we just barely found a couple of seats which opened up as we waited. We got our drinks to go just in case. read more

Read this review as a whisper. This place is so comfy. A lot of table seating and bar seating. I love that the menu offers not just coffee, but boozy coffee as well as beer, wine, cider and spirits. I visited a Friday morning and the people reading and doing work here were church mouse quiet. The music playing overhead was this great southern blues-y mix and it really added to homey ambience of the place. I didn't have any work to do, but just needed to kill some time and I felt perfectly comfortable reading my book while sipping my black pepper, vanilla fig latte and enjoying this delectable cranberry scone. The music here is either live or vinyl. They host a lot of live music events, karaoke, open mic, etc. Great space. read more

Cafe Mustache is a charmingly inviting, and cozy coffee shop located in a bustling part of town. Once you enter this establishment, you are greeted with an eclectic array of grandma's furniture coupled with a few modern nuances giving it a warm, lived-in vibe. Overhead, there plays a vinyl record of local artists and the scent of freshly ground espresso beans linger in the air. Around you, ample seating awaits with a few tables taken up by patrons either on their laptop doing work or others sharing a cup of coffee discussing their views of the world around them. It was a Thursday mid morning when I strolled through here in need of a cup of strong coffee. I ordered a large americano and the friendly staff member recommended a raspberry scone as a pairing. Both were delicious and reasonably priced. I looked further at the menu and discovered thoughtfully cherry-picked items from local distributers that I loved (i.e. bobtail creamery, paper moon bakery, and bleeding heart bakery)- to name a few. I couldn't stay for long because errands were ahead of me, but I could definitely see myself coming back and meeting a friend for coffee and conversation, utilizing the free wifi and doing some paperwork, or even grabbing a beer if revolution brewery next door is too crowded. I've lived in Logan Square for 11 years. I remember when the neighborhood had no cafes--not even Starbucks. So to have places like Cafe Mustache opening in the neighborhood is pure boomshakalaka. Mustache is simple, offering great coffee, some simple pastries and a friendly staff made up of its ownership group. The wifi works well and since the change the password daily, it really is just for its own customers that day. No neighborhood people siphoning bandwidth. The music is there but not blaring. I'm looking forward to this new cafe's bright future in the neighborhood. read more

I am a huge fan of Cafe Mustache, especially since New Wave has worn out its welcome in Logan Square, as far as I'm concerned. The atmosphere is nice. Both times I've been in here, it's been fairly empty and there's been plenty of seating to choose from. The music is loud but not annoying and the chatter from other patrons has been pretty quiet. There's plenty of seating at a table and free wifi if you need it. The coffee is cheap and the iced coffee/tea is very tasty. The sandwiches are also very, very tasty. The prices are right and they serve drinks and food in real cups and on real plates... yay! It's a bit out of the way if you don't live right on Milwaukee or California (or south of there), but it's worth the trek, especially if you're sick of the hipster hellhole on Logan. read more

There's a cafe when you walk in but a cozy bar area is right off to the side. While you won't find anything on tap, their bottle selection should work for you whether you're looking for a local craft beer or just a few Schlitz tall boys. What if you don't actually want to talk to the people you're hanging out with? Cafe Mustache has something for you too. Most nights they have some kind of entertainment on a stage near the bar. I have been terrified to go into this place. The name says it all. And I wasn't in the mood for self-importance. But, my goodness, I was way off. Excellent staff. The biggest thing I noticed is the space: it's big AND small at the same time. There is a lot of room but somehow the oversized furniture -- fun and 50s! -- seems to overwhelm the space. I am nitpicking. Because they had amazing chai, good selection of treats and bevs and good prices. The WiFi is free and the password changes daily. I noticed there's a board above the cream and bus tubs so look there. Also, if you are bringing your computer, make sure you have extra battery. Very nice, low-key independent coffee joint in the Square. We've really needed one of these in this particular neck of the woods for some time now, and my hopes were high upon seeing the signs up for this place. Did not disappoint. The coffee was tasty, the vibe chill, the service friendly. Yeah the wifi isn't the speediest, but whaddya want for nothin'? Plenty of seating in a comfy atmosphere, without the gargantua vibe of whatever that Filter doppleganger is a little ways north. Recently moved into the Logan Square neighborhood and was looking for my "to-go" cafe, and I found it real fast! Easily my most frequented spot in the area. Came in here one morning and grabbed and ice coffee and a quinoa and avocado wrap. Coffee was on point (no burnt Starbucks taste). The wrap was stuffed with lots of veggies, maybe a little bit too many but that was just personal preference. LOTS of outlets/surge protectors which is definitely appreciated at a cafe. Pretty quiet during the day with most people working on laptops. Wifi cuts off at 6pm and they have a daily password that is usually pretty unique. Now the main reason I fell in love with this place is for what I call "the weekend cure". I came here two Sundays in row feeling less than great with the gf and got the grilled cheese with the vegan chili. This is the kind of comfort food you need after a long weekend and it hit the spot immediately. The grilled cheese has 3 different cheeses and includes some nice peppers and onions to give it some extra flavor. Pairs great with the well-known vegan chili and is a great, low-key Sunday morning brunch. It also works for basically any other meal, but the kitchen does close at 3pm so watch out for that. Came here at night once as well and the bar is great to just grab a drink and chat with a buddy. Good local beers are available out of the can (little pricey) and they had a decent drink selection as well. I ended up here the other day, in need of killing some time. Since it was beyond cold outside I wandered in here and boy am I glad I did! I had the best hot chocolate I've ever had in my life. EVER! Their menu is pretty extensive, they also serve alcohol (and alcoholic coffee, because why not mix two amazing drinks in order to make something out of this world tasty). It's definitely a neighborhood spot, and one that suits this neighborhood quite well, but I would definitely come back! Also, I loved that they had a globe lamp and a ton of books just laying around. I've been living in Logan for almost a year now and visiting my boyfriend over here for about two years. As a coffee fanatic and someone who can't study/work at their home because it's a mess and it's tough to focus with all my stuff around, I am constantly on the look out for great cafés to hang in. CAFE MUSTACHE IS THE BEST. So many coffee shops have this pretentious, loftier than thou because I brew coffee, attitude with unfriendly staff and mediocre coffee/food. Cafe mustache has the nicest staff I have ever interacted with at a coffee shop in the area. They are always super upbeat and friendly and patient with me When I'm tired and can't decide what to order. Not only is the staff wonderful but the coffee is on point. Great coffee and bottomless cup for 3 bucks I am so in. I usually order a coffee with a shot of espresso(red eye) and it is sooo good. Now not only are the staff and coffee amazing but the food is stellar. I spent 13 bucks on a breakfast burrito at a coffee shop and was NOT disappointed. I would spend 13 bucks on their bacon breakfast wrap any day. It's absolutely delicious and literally put me in a good mood for the rest of my day. The grilled cheese is also to die for and I'm excited to try some more of the food in the future. This is super long I just really like this place. Also the decor is on point and they are always playing rad records on a record player which is always great because I prefer vinyl and there is nothing like the sound of a vinyl record. I just moved to Chicago and I've been looking for a really good coffee shop. Just got here from a city with a super awesome 24 hour coffee shop and I haven't been able to find anything just like it in the city. That being said....cafe mustache comes very close. It's definitely one of the better coffee shops in Chicago I've been to so far. Unlimited coffee for $3, glass bottles of coke and really good food. It lost one star because the wifi sucks. I sell things on ebay for a living and come here to use the wifi. I lose my connection every few minutes. Overall...I would recommend it. read more

I cannot even begin to count the reasons why this cafe is a God send to the 2300 block of North Milwaukee and after reading some reviews indulging in their writers' keen senses of their own insecurities, I wanted to jump into the fore. First of all, the product is great. I have yet to try the food but the coffee drinks are always sensational -- strong but not bitter -- and major props to anywhere that offers a soy milk option out in the open, as opposed to hoarding it behind the counter for an extra charge. Us lactose-challenged folk deserve our daily jolts too. As for the atmosphere, sure, some of the chairs creek, and, yes, some heads will turn when you enter the door, but it's all what you make out of it. Concentrate, instead, on the eclectic music that serves as a feast to the ears or the always interesting decor. And the always kind service. If you have a bone to pick with this place, I'd venture to say you're really digging. And probably have some issues to work out sitting on a couch in a shrink's office. read more

Apparently this place just opened so I strolled on down with some friendly (borderline creepy) dude strutting next to me the whole way. When I arrived at the door, he told me that was his final destination too. At least I was sure I was at the right place. But enough of the journey. I walked in and the environment felt like a jazzcat's college campus. I almost started snapping my fingers. Cool, hipster cafe with a good amount of seats in the front and back room. There was great jazz music playing. My attention span was losing, but my foot was grooving. I ordered a small cappuccino. Four dollars straight! It came out quick and was extra, extra frothy just the way I like it. I can give this place 5 stars based solely on their phenomenal taste in music. The baristas will throw on a classic, usually chill vinyl and before long you've sunk hours into the book you're reading or the work you're doing on your laptop. Blondie, DJ Shadow, Radiohead, Boards of Canada. I've only been here a couple times but I haven't heard a record I don't already own and love. They brew pretty good coffee, though admittedly I haven't really branched out yet beyond the classic latte or americano. It's usually on the quieter side for a cafe too even when it gets busy. One of my favorite places in the whole city to sit and relax and have a coffee. Everyone is always very respectful, and the "vibe" isn't forced at all. I've been at night a few times and it's always been busy in the bar area while still pretty relaxed in what remains the "cafe." Brought my parents here while they were in town, and they were really impressed by the quality of the coffee drinks they ordered. Also definitely check out their brunch specials. If you are looking for a cozy coffee shop to read or study this is a great option in Logan Square. The seating can be a bit tight when crowded with hipsters. I was able to read my paper and have a few cups of coffee without being disturbed. The crowd was pretty considerate and quiet. Edit: So this place just got bumped to 5 stars. They started playing Aretha's Young Gifted and Black as I walked in this evening. That's one of my all time favorite albums. That's a ridiculous reason to give a business 5 stars, I know, but it made me so effing happy that I had to. I've even warmed up to the name a bit. The rest of my review stands as previously, below. However, I should strike my comment about sustaining their hours. They seem to be managing it all right, else they would have changed them by now. I still need to check out their Wednesday Night Wax and bring some of my favorites in. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So, I don't like the name. I think it's gimmicky. It almost made me not want to go in at first. But I'm really happy they didn't go the "one word name" and call it "Coffee" or something. Non sequitur, but why is that popular? "Piece" , "Bagel" , "Cumin" blah blah blah. It's so hokey. All that aside, it's a really nice place. Very classy inside. Good product. Nice people. I'm a fan. Besides it occupies a niche in that particular area. I hope they'll be able to sustain business, and being close to the train stop is a plus. They should do some events soon probably because the foot traffic and word of mouth may take a second. They also need some kind of an awning or overhanging sign and light out front because I almost missed it walking by last night. They're open at 6 am and closed at 11pm! Solid 3 stars, promise promise. At first I wasn't jazzed, not so much the name which really seemed to TICK SOME PEOPLE OFF WHOA!, but because I just can't see in the place! I mean that's what a window is for, aside from natural light, too many band posters dudes (I'm at an age where "dudes" is still appropriate). It's really cozy and homey, totally was fine hanging out there without getting flack from anyone. There was a weird guy on his laptop laughing loudly behind me, which didn't bother me at all, it was just generally creepy by himself. The coffee was just okay. I mean I don't really like New Wave's coffee for the bitterness & low on taste, but this coffee is more on the watery side which isn't a neutral balance either. And I'm not even a coffee enthusiast or anything, I drink from diners and Cosi. But the music can play without being intrusive and you could actually bring your laptop without getting irritated. It's more about cultivating a hangout than it is about being a coffee spot, which is perfectly a-ok to my standards. read more

I've only been here for Sunday karaoke and don't think I will return. The drinks seem overpriced to me. First I tried a cider (I think it was $6) that tasted like water. Then I tried wine ($7) that looked like grape juice and tasted equally disappointing. Additionally, every pour was lighter than the last. I was satisfied with the karaoke until I tried to sing more than once. My friend and I always enter our slips close to each other. Typically she sings, and I sing right after her. I was a little slow this time, so there were a couple singers in between. After she sang for the second time, I was expecting to get called soon after. About 10 songs later, I decided to ask the KJ for an estimate. As he sorted through the slips, I noticed he had lost my 2nd slip and my 3rd was buried underneath about 7 other singers. He said to me something like, it's not about fairness, it's about balancing the mood, and I can bump you up... if you put some money in the tip jar. "That's the way it works." Yeah, no. I left. Karaoke here is only for people in their early 20s that want to sing happy, overplayed, slightly annoying songs. I will pass. read more

I'd go here once a week when I lived across the street, and got stuff to go. Always impressed with the friendliness, great food and coffee; and was so glad I could go here and feel good about buying a sandwich when I was too lazy to make one myself. I never stayed there to eat, or chose it as a meeting spot to catch up with my girlfriends, because there were usually people in there studying or working, and I didn't want to feel disruptive. But now they serve booze and sometimes have live music! I had an amazing time hanging out there on Thursday night! The Irish coffee I ordered was made with love! The staff was happy to recommend a favorite beer. The tables and chairs were re-arranged so that everyone can fit comfortably. The singer/guitar player was terrific and entertaining! Oh, and there was a choir with hot women and handsome men. I'm going to keep Cafe Mustache in mind if I ever do need a meeting spot from now on. I stopped by here a couple of Sundays ago with my fiance for an afternoon pick me up. We didn't exactly come here on purpose but the name caught my eye as we were walking by and so we ended up popping in. The inside of the cafe is an interesting place as it walls are covered with random tchotchke as well as a big print of a mustache picture and none of the tables match with each set of chairs only matching with those at the same table. It was an environment that I found to be fun. While waiting to order my Americano I took the time to look at the food menu and ended up being sad that I had just eaten and was not hungry as a couple of the menu items sounded good. Once we got waited on and I had placed my order I noticed on the sign that my large Americano was to get four shots of espresso. Can you say awesome? Not only was it strong but the Americano ended up being smooth too and I really enjoyed it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I liked the random decor of the place, the way that the food menu sounded and thought that the coffee was good as well. read more

Annoying and uncomfortable furniture. Awkwardly packed in to a too-small space. And one of the records they were playing had a constant popping sound - reminded me why records weren't always so great. Ate an egg and bacon wrap. Was mediocre. Bacon was thin and cheap. Eggs were like a microwaved hockey puck. They had some good looking pastries but I was in the mood for something savory. Guy at counter was nice.
