Came here for the Folkekøkken meal they serve on Tuesday nights from 17-20. Didn't know what to expect since I had never been to a Folkekøkken-style meal before, but I had heard a lot of nice things about them and particularly the one at Cafe Le Rouge. I liked the concept, food and price and will most likely return.
We arrived around 18 and there was still plenty of food and seating for our group of 3 people. We stayed for about 45 minutes and during that time more people continued to join the meal and the repeatedly filled the buffet with new food. It was not as crowded as I expected it would be, but it was also the Tuesday after Roskilde Festival and I'm sure many people were tired and/or on summer vacation. I've heard it can get very crowded during the "busy" season though.
The night we went they were serving a meal of paella with chicken, calamaris and fresh clams, orange salad with spinach and roasted seeds/nuts and vinaigrette, salad with pimientos, grilled peppers and zucchini, olives and pickled mushrooms, and bread. The food was okay (rice was overcooked, calamari was breaded and undercooked, salad was pretty good), but I don't think most people come here for the quality of the food. It's something I would come back for because of the nice concept of a Folkekøkken and the atmosphere of sharing a meal with members of the community.
The meal costs 55kr for adults and 35kr for kids 10yrs and younger. Drinks are not included in the cost of the meal but are fairly priced. There are alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to choose from. A pitcher of tap water is 12kr.
The cafe has a lot of seating and you can easily come here in a group. It's nicely decorated and a very open space. It is located inside Nørrebrohallen which is right next to Superkilen Park in Nørrebro.
Not sure how this Folkekøkken compares to others, but I liked it and will come back again one day.
Tip: They post the menu for the Folkekøkken on their Facebook page ('Cafe Le Rouge') the day before/of so you can be prepared for what they'll be serving. read more
