Taiwanese beef noodle soup
Farah K.

I'll be honest in saying my review is mostly for the one dish I get from here and that too usually as take out. I've developed a taste for Taiwanese beef noodle soup and most of the places that make it are in Rockville. This is the only local one in Germantown that I like because it will absolutely warm you up on a rainy day or cold Winter night or when you're fighting a nasty cold. It has the right level of numbing spiciness. Ample amounts of beef as well, and they have handpulled noodles to boot. Price point is about $10 so that too is on par with the general pricing of such an item. I have not had any customer service issues as usually I call it in, and they have it ready within 10 to 15 minutes for pickup.

Quick lunch menu (total 4 items for $6.99)

I had 4-items-lunch today, its system was same as Panda Express. You can choose 1 of fried rice/lomain/rice noodle, and 3 main dishes such as general tso chicken, orange shrimp, or broccoli beef. I paid $7.45 (tax included). Credit card minimum $10. Foods were fresh and staffs were very friendly. I would like to definitely visit again.

Kung pow tofu...flavorful.

4 1/2 stars. Ok, so I went twice within one week. The dishes we ordered were very good. There are new owners and the one I met, Wendy, was very polite and friendly. The service was good. Portions were very fair and prices were decent. See photos...beef chow foon, sliced chicken, ginger, and scallions in pot, chicken and sweet corn soup, kung pow fried tofu, assorted meats with seafoose and fried tofu in pot. All dishes were delicious!! Finally, they will be doing Chinese hot pot sometime in May, I definitely will be going there when I'm back in town. Thwye are also going to be adding some Szechuan dishes to the menu. Can't wait to return to Germantown!

Overall good quality, just wish the pieces of chicken were smaller, and the wontons had sauce.

The dining area is one room, from what I could see, but very clean. You can see the kitchen where there are stacks of steamer baskets used for the soup basket. Some table had printed drinks menu but we got a handwritten one. All the menus are laminated and you're given a whiteboard marker to mark what you would like to order. We ordered some appetizers/snacks along with soup dumplings and the crispy coconut shrimp balls. Shortly after ordering, the side dishes and appetizers appeared. The dough sticks were a simple beige food for the child who happily munched on it. It's a fried dough sticks that didn't seem too greasy. Each half can still break into two smaller sticks for smaller bites. Traditionally it's paired with soy milk but we had already ordered a lot of food. The cucumber garlic salad was crispy, flavorful, and slightly sweet. Little threads of carrot added a bit of textural difference and color. The garlic provided a small bite without overpowering the fish. It's a kid-friendly dish as long as they are okay with cilantro! This is a must order. The scallion pancake with beef with also a huge hit. It's crispy and flaky (but not crumbly) and it's served with slices of beef, what appeared to be some sweet sauce (hoisin maybe?) and thinly shredded scallions. It was similar to Peking Duck but with a scallion pancake and beef instead of the thin pancake and duck. The thinly shredded scallions add a bit of a kick and freshness that counteracts the oil from the scallion pancake. The coconut-crispy shrimp balls were a huge hit. This dish was whole, headless, fried shrimp tossed in a sweet sauce then dusted with shredded coconut, served with some slices of pineapple. It reminded us a bit of mayo-shrimp dishes but with coconut. An order of the chicken soup dumplings were placed just because most of the soup dumplings contain pork. It was recommended over the other non pork shrimp and zucchini dumplings. They don't seem very hot until you get your first big bite. Took a nibble, drank some of the broth, and then with a bigger bite realized there was still more broth! Ginger, soy sauce, and chili crisp/oil is available on the table, but the juicy soup dumplings were perfect on their own. The steamer of rainbow dumplings was also quickly devoured with the black truffle (pork), mala spicy pork, and shrimp/zucchini being the favorites. Each soup dumplings had its own unique taste. Upon hearing the shrimp/zucchini was liked because it was refreshing, an order of those were also placed. Once they arrived, I had to agree they were very good. They have a different taste and texture and even though I thought the chicken was good, I found myself quickly devouring the steaming soup dumplings. While we ate, our drinks were constantly refilled and we were asked if we needed anything, even ginger slices. With the clean, prompt, service that comes along with delicious foods, we're bound to come back to try the other foods!

B2J Fish Soup - Small combo sized spicy sour fish soup

Some pretty outstanding fish soup. Don't let yourself get fooled by the slightly random /…read morenonsensical name (even the Chinese name makes no sense to me -- what on earth does "no second / two house / family" mean?); B2J Fish Soup is home to one some of the best authentic Chinese food in the DMV. As the name implies, they specialize in fish soup, particularly a hot and sour pickled fish soup (suan cai yu) that originates from Sichuan. This dish was one of my childhood favorites, and B2J did an incredible job crafting a deeply flavorful soup that transported me right back to my family's kitchen. The soup is served in the largest bowls I've ever seen and absolutely loaded with pickled veggies and tender, flaky fish that completely soaks up all the spicy and sour flavor. I appreciate that the soup isn't overly spicy or salty, so it's possible to drink the actual soup instead of just fishing out its fillings, and it goes great with the side of white rice. Their meal combo options also come with several appetizers of choice so, in addition to the delightful suan cai yu, we also got the fried milk custard and wood ear mushroom salad. The salad was super refreshing, with a great crunch from the wood ear mushrooms and red onions. The dressing was mostly vinegar and chili-based, so it was sour, spicy, salty, and slightly sweet. It was a delightful precursor to the spicy and sour fish soup, and the leftovers also kept incredibly well over the next couple of days. The fried milk custard was a great appetizer but made an even better dessert; the milk was gooey and melty, and the fried outer shell was perfectly crispy. It was such a delightful combination of flavors and not overly sweet. This hidden gem is quite quaint, but they managed to fit a decent amount of seating inside, with several long tables lining each side of the restaurant and a narrow aisle in between. The seats are comfy and, while the tables are quite close together, there's still enough space to feel like you have a bit of privacy / separation from the other diners. I love the little bamboo light fixtures, and one of their back walls has a little semi-circle design that looks like fish scales, adding to the fun, fish-themed ambiance.

We loved the classic flavor- just enough spicy ( plenty enough for me), to make it not overwhelm the fish and still has a good kick. We did try their spicier one - that was too much spicy in our opinion, but the level of spiciness is a personal preference. Their non- spicy tomato base is also very good! The fish itself- not fishy at all. Very fresh, goes very well with the soup. The sauerkraut is very flavorful and enhances the experience well, not overpowering anything. It all goes in harmony to creat a great experience! Loved their cold spicy chicken as an appetizer and the cucumber salad with peanuts were very well received. And one more thing - their rice - is SO good! Yeah, odd thing to specifically mention rice of any Asian restaurant- this is my first as well! But their rice was just that good!
