I mostly came here for the view -- love it. The café has one of the best outlooks in the area (overlooking Marienplatz) if you can snag a seat near the window. Even though it was quite busy when we arrived, the staff were accommodating and genuinely friendly. Somehow, they managed to find us a table, and later even helped us move closer to the window when one opened up. I was mainly here for the coffee. The food was solid, not mind-blowing but enjoyable. One small thing that caught my attention was the bathroom tipping system, which was a bit confusing at first, but it seems to be a norm in this area, so I can't really fault the café for that. Overall, it's the kind of place I'd come back to for a relaxing coffee break with a view. I could not love this spot more. Beautiful covered/ enclosed Terrance where you look into a cute courtyard and just steps from the glockenspiel to hear its chimes. It was pouring rain the day we came and to sit and look out while hearing the sound was so magical. Service was friendly too! The food was absolutely phenomenal. Best friend egg I've ever had, French toast just like my great grandma would make, and my husband LOVED the wellness bowl. We got lucky getting a table on the side of the restaurant overlooking the Marienplatz Glockenspiel. When we arrived, there were a few people lining the hallways, waiting for a random group to get up so they could snag a table. I went into the dining room we eventually had lunch in to talk to the hostess, and I'm glad we did. We had to wait for maybe five or so minutes, but we were eventually taken to a small table. My husband labeled that "persistence", but in reality, I didn't want to have to slog through the rain to find another spot for lunch. It was just after noon, and even though the Christmas Market was open, most of the restaurants in Marienplatz were busy. It was just the season. My request (in German) for two English menus was met with a smile and acknowledgement, in English. We started our lunch with two pints of a Hofbräu Münchner Weisse (their beer menu is slightly slim), and settled in to review the menu. I went with the lamb meatballs, served over potatoes, and with a creamy leek sauce and crispy onions. My husband opted for the Chicken Saltimbocca, which came with a small pasta side and salad. They also brought a basket of freshly-sliced bread to the table (which I barely sampled. I know, who AM I, even?) The food was fresh and tasty, though I did enjoy my meal way more than my husband enjoyed his. He did like the flavor, but said it wasn't as cohesive a plate as he'd expected. The chicken was wrapped in thin layers of prosciutto, and he had a small side of fresh pasta with a red sauce and some vegetables. Meanwhile, I made short work of my dish, which featured irregularly-shaped meatballs (you could tell they were handmade). The meat had good flavor, and paired well with the creamy leek sauce and potatoes. The fried onions added a nice bit of crunch and flavor, as well. Our waiter was friendly and seemed to enjoy chatting with us in English (I did battle a lot of fear of speaking German, because I'm a ninny). The space was warm and close - lots of tables with lots of people - and it had a nice view of the square below and the Glockenspiel across from us. We weren't there at a time when the Glockenspiel puts on its show, but we'd caught that earlier in the day (from the ground level), so it wasn't a draw for us. read more

This cafe is hidden away across from the glockenspiel. If you sit outside, you have a great view of the square. If you ask for an English menu, you get a one page menu (but their regular menu in German has many more options if you can read it). We ordered a salmon dish, a caesar and chicken salad, and a herb salad (we needed to take a break from all the meat). The food was great, but one tip for the salads is to ask for the salad dressing on the side. While it was delicious, it was a little too salty for my taste because the dish was drenched in dressing (when I finished, there was still a little puddle of salad dressing remaining). We ordered the black forest cake for dessert to share. It was okay- cherries were there amongst a slightly dry sponge, but there was more cream than sponge which kind of made it too heavy. read more

My group and I went for breakfast and the food is delicious! Some of us ordered the huevos rancheros (German style) as seen in my picture, with a glass of orange juice and water. Everything was so fresh. And it came quickly. We weren't able to be seated outside because there were no more seats but we still had a lovely glimpse of Marienplatz and the weather was perfect inside our area. The waiter was a nice gentleman and he was helpful as well. The second time I went with just my boyfriend and we shared the same, pleasant experience. Please keep in mind to take money for the restrooms. Also, there is a small elevator that can take you up if you can not climb up the 4 flights of stairs. Overall, it is 100% recommended. read more

After years of living in Munich I finally got a chance to try this Munich institution. Located on the 5th floor of a building facing Marienplatz, you would miss it if you did not know it was upstairs. The restaurant is dived into three or four sections with seating and in the warmer days I believe you can sit outside and look at all the people below. The menu is a classic bistro menu with a combination of Bavarian, Italian and continental dishes. The drinks are plenty and I really liked my g&t that was made. The Bavarian burger I had (kalbsfleischpfanzerl) was quite nicely made and tasted great with the mash. I almost licked my plate clean :-) the dessert was also nice as was the coffee. We had an excellent waitress and despite it being full when we arrived they were kind enough to get us a table in 15mins for 8 people. The service was great even though it was full and that alone will bring me back here again. Glad I came here finally and look forward to my next visit. read more

Turns out they don't open until 10 so we just sat there till then. No big deal though. We realized that we could have easily shared one, especially mine!! They were especially generous with the smoked salmon. I couldn't even touch my fruit at the end of the meal cause I was so full. This cafe has the lucky fortune of overlooking one of the most impressive buildings in Munich - the glockenspiel! I stumbled upon it on my first day when I got caught in the rain, while I was sightseeing. I went inside and was pleasantly surprised to see how nice the restaurant was. They have a great menu, sadly I had already eaten so just ordered a cocktail, but the Bellini was lovely. At €5 it was a well priced and really delicious. This place really is ideal to overlook the glockenspiel and spend a few hours watching the world go by. Ok, bear with me as I'm playing catch up on a few reviews! :) I enjoyed this restaurant so much that I visited it TWICE on my trip to Munich (first week of October, 2018). I had a lovely cheese plate for brunch one day, and a huge bowl of pasta the next time. Now, this cafe does, indeed, have a lovely view of the Glockenspiel... and that's wonderful... but it's not even in my top 5 reasons to eat here! The service here is spectacular. The host and waiters will make you feel right at home. The food is fresh, creative, and delicious (to say nothing of their cakes and sweets which are delectable!). The drinks are lovely as well! It may be a touch cramped as they do their best to serve as many as possible, but it has a very welcoming and home-like feeling that you can only get from a truly great cafe in Bavaria! This place seems to be very popular and highly recommended by the hotel concierges but I am not quite sure why such rave reviews here. We arrived pretty weary after a red eye flight and craved a little coffee and breakfast. The 5th floor restaurant does offer a direct view of marienplatz which is nice for tourists and the like. However, service is not quite as friendly as one might expect. My husband ordered a buttered pretzel and half grapefruit. The coffee was tasty as was the fruit but the typical Bavarian style pretzel was hard, rather small and served unsliced with the hardest nearly frozen pat of butter I have ever had. Guess they just don't slice the pretzel and with some fresh warm butter as we were expecting. There are certainly many other establishments and market stands and bakeries that serve delicious Bavarian pretzels with ample warm butter and a variety of flavors of seasoning for the pretzels. That said, the reviews for more substantial meals here seem to be more favorable so maybe it is worth a try. read more

I was skeptical going into this place thinking it would be a tourist trap but boy was I wrong. I ordered the meatballs on mashed potato and a mustard creme sauce that was to die for. My sister had a nice salad variety with chicken that was also really great. I would imagine the ambiance is even better in the summer months when it becomes somewhat outdoors. 2.5 stars. The only reason why one should go to Cafe Glockenspiel is simply to dine with a view of Marienplatz. But only about a 1/3 of the customers get to sit by the windows. The rest sits in the middle, and there isn't too much of a view from there. We went on a late Saturday afternoon, and it was busy. We waited for about 15 minutes for a table, which wasn't so bad. Unfortunately, we were not lucky enough to sit by the windows, so no view for us. The service was sub par. While I understand the hecticness of the cafe, our server was not even trying. He came to take our order, to put our order on the table, and to take our money when we wanted to leave. Simply no charm. We only got cakes and drinks, so I cannot speak for its hot food. We got the chocolate apple cake and a berry mousse cake with a coffee and pineapple-flavored homemade lemonade. The berry cake and the drinks were all good, but the chocolate apple cake was quite dry. A meh experience. read more

I'm very disappointed to say that despite the beautiful view and location, we had a pretty unfortunate experience with our waiter. When we received the bill, my friend's drink was twice the amount on the menu. We asked our waiter about it, and he said that because it was a cocktail, the price. We tried to have a better understanding of why there would be a price discrepancy from the menu, but he was adamant we were in the wrong, and kept saying there wasn't a problem. I'm hoping the behavior was circumstantial, that it was a busy night, and other didn't have this experience in the main restaurant (we were in the bar), but not sure I would go back based on the treatment. If the owner looses the chef, who can cook, they can close the restaurant down, basically. When will this place start to hire friendly, welcoming people? Went here to get away from the late afternoon/evening crowds at the Christkindlmarkt. Didn't have food but had a beer and arrived late enough to easily get a table overlooking the Marienplatz. Definitely worth going if you can get the view. Otherwise, given the other reviews, maybe not worth the effort. If not going to eat, to get a table by the window, I suggest going close to closing time. Enough time to have a few drinks but late enough that the place isn't full. And probably better to not go on a Friday or Saturday to get a window table (there are other dining areas, but seems to be only one looking over the Marienplatz. read more

Take the elevator up to this hidden Munchen restaurant. Waiter seated us and gave us an hour. A German friend recommended this restaurant to us and we literally were thrilled with the breakfast food and scenery. We ordered breakfast II and breakfast III and coffee. Cheese, meats, boiled egg, fresh fruits, breads, yogurt, - amazing. Everything everyone else order looked amazing including their coffees and teas. Our bread basket, coffee and plates were exceptional. Seems touristy - it's not. Once we paid our-- server let us know our hour wasn't up yeti! How sweet is that? I really like this little cafe, atmosphere and food it offers. I've been there a few times, and never was disappointed. First of all, the location is really nice. It's right on Marienplatz on the 5th floor of a building there. You can sit outside on a nice terrace that offers a nice view. I'm a big fan of the goat cheese salad. The portion size is good, it's nicely cooked, and walnuts give the salad some special notes. We also tried there breakfast that had salmon in it, and it was a decent value too. It was a plate full of cheese, salmon, horseradish, proscuitto, a bowl of fresh yogurt with fruit, some fruit (grapes, mango, pineapple, apples, oranges), marmalade, cocktail shrimps salad and a basket of fresh bread. Everything was very tasty. We also tried there tomato soup that was quite delicious. I would also recommend the fresh homemade cherry lemonade, very refreshing. This was my first restaurant in Germany. And I was not disappointed! This is by far one of the best breakfast I have had in Europe. The service was great! The location was really pretty. The food was really good. I had the huevos rancheros. They were really good. It came beans and chips and guacamole. Everything was seasoned really well. I also had a croissant with jam and butter. And it was the best jam I have ever had!! It was the perfect taste. The cappuccino was also very good, it warmed my soul. Overall this place was phenomenal!
