This place is stuck in time, my guess is the 80s, and I love it for that. Operated by hardworking staff, the cafe is conveniently located close to the harbor (great spot to stop for food prior to an Alcatraz tour). The menu is full of diverse options including frittatas, falafel wraps, and salads that include the infamous capers (with fresh tomatoes, olives, mozzarella, and italian seasoning). The only grip is timing: if you are in a rush, hop to another spot. The food also appears basic. The line can get long here and with little staff support, folks eating at the outdoor/indoor tables wait longer than normal. To-go orders also take time given the lack of staff. Such a wonderful atmosphere! It felt homey and like a classic, casual cafe run by a fine gentleman. I loved the soft radio playing tunes in the back as I sat down in one of their many chairs and looked at the chalkboard menu. The service was amazing, I was welcomed in by the boss and we had a great conversation about the food! I really love the atmosphere of this place. I had seen this amazing avocado toast here on yelp and got that alongside a lox bagel. It was absolutely SUPERB! I enjoyed my meal dearly and genuinely wish that this cafe was closer to where I lived because I would certainly frequent such a cute place. This place is so good. You can easily walk right by but but this place was cause I needed to find somewhere to work and hang out while my bf was working close by. Very cute cafe with great food and drinks. Obviously frequented by a lot of regulars who seem to personally know the proprietor. My friends and I went on a Sunday morning and we all ordered egg dishes, which did take a while to make. This makes sense because a lot of people came in and it's only one person working behind the counter (and everything is made to order). No problem if you have time to sit and hang out but if you're in a rush and you want more than a coffee, might not be the best option. Still going strong! Cafe Francisco is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, cafe's in the neighborhood. Near a quarter of a century ago when I moved to San Francisco, I started coming to this neighborhood cafe where I met many neighbors who later became friends. Many of them have moved on now, but those of us who are still around still get together here and enjoy each other's company over a beer, coffee or a meal. The coffee is good, as are the sandwiches, but my favorites remain the same: the Mediterranean Plate (under Salads) and Falafel Sandwich. For breakfast, I always go with Francisco Bagel with Lox! Those are my picks and I tend to get into routines and that is precisely why you should not limit yourself to my favorites list when you visit! :-) read more

A very mediocare place that makes buck on the fact that there aren't many places around. The francisco fritata was very bad, bland and no taste. How can you ruin a Fritata? the bread was old supermarket bread heated in a microwave, waste of money. The lux bagel was ok, i would have given it 3 stars, this is why the place didn't get 1 star. there was one guy, who didn't make our food for a very long time, he kept on serving new customers and we have to keep on asking until he made our food. Hopefully they will improve, until they change - we wont return. read more

We popped into Cafe Francisco on our last morning in the city, it was a fantastic breakfast spot. Our breakfast bagels were prepared perfectly and piping hot! The coffee was spectacular also. Found this little gem of a cafe when trying to run away from tourists at Fisherman's Wharf (and, yeah, I'm a tourist, too). It's a tiny cafe with outdoor seating in an artsy, chill environment. I was surprised at the extent of the menu options for such a small place. I went from frantic escape-the-annoying-tourist mode to chill-and-relax-here mode in just a few minutes. I have no idea what music station was playing, but I loved it and could have stayed all day. Some people had laptops out, and it appeared they felt the same way. Edison lights, too? I don't want to leave! But I digress... The food was great. I ordered a turkey BLT+avocado. And although they I initially messed up and slapped mayo on it, I got a fresh sandwich and no eye roll when I exposed the error. Deducted one star for a not sparkling clean bathroom and a minimally frightening view of the kitchen when exiting the bathroom. Definitely worth a visit to this cafe if you are a tourist but hate tourists like I do. It's the perfect escape. read more

Cafe Francisco is a sleepy cafe that blends well with the laid back neighborhood it's in. Nothing fancy but will do the job for a simple bite in the middle of the day. The menus is pretty straight forward with omelets, sandwiches, and salads. Morning bagels too if you're early. Sandwiches come with two slices of grapefruit which has become synonymous with the cafe for me. I've had the BLT, tuna salad sandwich, and the tuna melt which were fine for lunch albeit a light one. Big and think slices of tomato and mozzarella in the Caprese salad with a liberal amount of olive oil. My favorite item thus far though is the Falafel sandwich served in pita bread. Tasty falafel combined with fresh lettuce and tomato in a basil tahini sauce. All up a cozy cafe in the neighborhood to take it slow on lazy afternoons. read more

Now that Jamie W. and I strap on our Fitbits on weekends, we like to stroll from SoMa to Fisherman's Wharf and back just to see how many thousands of steps we can put on them. For some reason, Jamie always has more steps on his Fitbit which seems cruel and unfair since I walk as much as he does, probably even more because I'm way shorter. When I'm not busy being bitter, we find places new at least to us to park our keesters for a spell. On the way back on Powell, we stopped here since it just seemed inviting before going up that treacherous incline to Washington Square Park. OK, it's not that treacherous. It's not even that much of a hill. We just wanted a Diet Coke and maybe something to snack on before counting our steps again. There's quite a selection of salads and sandwiches served here. Also a lot of tables occupied by people working on their MacBook Airs (or is it MacBooks Air?). We were able to snag a booth and split the $7.95 Greek Salad, which turned out to be quite a treat with fresh hummus and dolmas added for good measure. There were lots of other fresh ingredients - garbanzo beans, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, olives, cucumber slices, tomato wedges, red onion, basil leaves, and feta cheese of course (see photo). It was an unexpected cornucopia of goodness which tasted healthy and delicious. As we munched, regulars walked in with great frequency to get their caffeine boost. Definitely a neighborhood cafe that I wish was in my neighborhood. Wow... I am super surprised with how good this coffee is. I am an Uber driver and I asked my last rider for a good cafe near where I was dropping her off. She suggested this place or Starbucks lol... so I didn't have much hope for this place since it was comparable to Sbux in her mind. I decided to try it anyways because... CAFFEINE! I ordered a large iced non-fat latte with a little bit of vanilla syrup. She made it right in front of me and engaged with me in conversation the whole time. It's a cute shop with lots of food options and the average coffee drinks (I.e. lattes, mochas, coffee, macchiato). There is a good amount of parking around the shop, which was super helpful. My drink was super yummy. The coffee was not fruity or bitter. It was the perfect amount of milk and syrup. I am very impressed and suggesting you give it a try. read more

Cafe Francisco is a lifesaver in an otherwise quiet neighborhood. I come regularly for their iced coffee, which is consistently fantastic, and often have one of their sandwiches for a quick lunch. Though it's not the most friendly for the price-conscious, their portion sizes are great, and the staff is always kind and understanding. Their BLT and Roast Beef are two of my favorite sandwiches, though the latter has a tendency to be on the dry side. Still, this venue has become my second home at this point, and I'm eager to continue supporting this business. read more
