Always a pleasure to see the museum and have lunch at Cafe Flo. Just went last week for a third time and was surprised to see a lot of items added to the menu. Have never been kept waiting to be seated or for our meal to get to our table. A beautiful spot and terrific food. And the grounds are perfect for a walk after the restaurant. I've eaten here 4 times over 3 years: the first time was pretty good; the second and third times the food was mediocre, but the location was wonderful; but, today the food was terrible and the service chaotic. Many things off the menu, the soup was watery, no escarole in the sausage escarole soup, cream of asparagus was very thin; the "mixed bread" was all the same big chunks of white bread with olive tapenade that was sweet, my turkey sandwich was dry and almost tasteless and the coleslaw had no seasoning so didn't taste like like coleslaw. No dessert was offered. The hostess was trying to help the waitress but just relayed mixed messages from the kitchen then forgot to tell the waitress when our orders changed. We tried to concentrate on the beautiful setting, but we won't be going back to the café. The chef really needs to taste her own food. read more

We have eaten here many times over the past couple of years and it was always very, very good. However, this time it was disappointing. The wait for the food was very long which I will accept seeing that the local festival was going on. The waitress took our drink and meal order at the same time. I finally got my soup, (Cold Peach soup which was delicious), but had to ask the waitress where our drinks were. She said she forgot???? After a long wait, we finally got our order. My wife got the Lobster salad ($33) which was just ok, nothing special at all. I got the West Coast Turkey Sandwich ($18) which was very dry. I couldn't eat the homemade chips that came with the sandwich as they were way over cooked. The only thing going for this place now is the terrific view, but you can walk around for free. read more

I've been to Cafe Flo probably 5 times. I just love the feeling of the spot - the view- the quaint New England ambiance you get dining here. My daughter and I had lunch this summer. It was busy at the time. They have lots of delicious choices on the menu so if you want to eat light or get an appetizer and entree to fill you up. We had sangria which was tasty and festive. We split and appetizer and each got an entree. The waitress was lovely too. I got the lunch special- they offer them daily too. My daughter enjoyed her lunch lobster salad and so did I. We shared a sorbet to wrap it up. Stop in you will not be disappointed. read more

Haven't been in a few years. Went for lunch today with friends. Very busy as it was the annual faerie house exhibit but luckily we had made reservations. Cool but they let us move our table off the porch and into the sun! Shared asparagus soup and the house made potato chips with blue cheese and bacon. Those were great. Baked cod and frenched chicken breast for entrees then shared the flourless chocolate torte....another winner. Wine, espresso an tea warmed us up and we'll be eagerly awaiting their reopening next Spring! PS...had a fabulous waitress. read more

Absolutely dreadful service and management. Wish I could tell you how the food was, but our party of six who made a reservation a week in advance for 1pm on a Saturday had to leave to go elsewhere. We arrived at 12;55pm and waited until 1:05 before someone was ready to talk to us. We told her we had a 1pm reservation and were told they didn't have a table for us and it would be about 15 minutes before they did. At 1:30 p.m. we were still waiting while watching a bunch of parties of to be seated before us. We asked again and were told it would be about another 10 minutes - this while there were three open smaller tables that could have been put together. I've never seen a reservation so blatantly NOT honored like this. Thankfully The Hangry Goose around the corner had no problem with a 6-person walk-up. Shame spending so much time sitting in the grass waiting and looking at the menu only to have to go elsewhere. Get it together, folks. read more

Food fell well short of expectations, steak was delivered Luke warm, and very watery. We didn't eat much of any food items that were ordered. The restaurant is a great concept that runs seasonally. Very relaxing atmosphere. The grounds are beautiful. I suggest to skip the food and sample cocktails and enjoy the scenery. read more

Best Arnold Palmer drink hands down! This place is a great find on a sunny day after touring the Florence Griswold museum. The menu is cute with a great view of the river. Café Flo is an absolute delight. The specials and menu are really well thought out, and the ambiance of the grounds and the river make every diner feel special. One of my friends and I enjoyed the sherry mushroom soup and the bourbon maple glazed salmon, both from the special menu. Sangria and a Bloody Mary were excellent. Apple fritters with maple crème anglaise for dessert-yum. They were out of several menu items, and that was explained immediately. I have been there before and seen the chef make the rounds. She clearly takes pride in her work, and rightly so. read more

We had a really nice lunch outside on the patio at Cafe Flo, at the Florence Griswold Museum. Not only was it lovely to overlook their gardens, the food was good, they easily accommodated food allergies, and they allowed us to bring a birthday cake to celebrate a birthday, and even served it for us (at no charge). The favorite was the lobster, avocado and roasted corn salad with a tarragon dressing. Everyone was very pleased with their meals, it was a nice visit. read more

This cafe situated in the Florence Griswold museum is quaint and has beautiful views of the grounds and river from every seat. The menu was fairly small but my family and I all found something we wanted. One special was corn and clam chowder, which was delicious and generously portioned. My mom's lobster BLT was also surprisingly full of lobster! However my chicken was pretty dry, had stingy amounts of couscous and vegetables, and didn't have any taste of truffle oil. The service was also meh, kind of hard to get the server's attention and it took a looong time to get our food. Overall I don't think it was worth the 45 minute wait (and we were quoted an hour). read more

Big chunks of tender lobster, in the lobster BLT.The dressing on the coleslaw was light, and had an interesting flavor, without the excessive mayonnaise you find in most coleslaws. A relaxing spring afternoon on the veranda with a peaceful view of the Lieutenant River! The best place in Old Lyme. We had the grilled bacon and apple cheese sandwich special and Halibut with chard special! It was delicious. The homemade sangria was perfectly mixed not too sweet not to strong! This is one of the loveliest spots to lunch... situated on the grounds of the gorgeous Florence Griswold Museum..this Cafe overlooks the Lieutenant River. My trio dined on the veranda...though it was an overcast day, the diffused lighting only added to the beauty of this locale. You can go for the picturesque location...but the best reason to go is the food. It is truly inspired...and delicious....sandwiches are fresh, with well sourced ingredients that elevate a simple sandwich to great heights..salads are well chosen and very fresh. There are lovely entrees to choose from if you want to go a bit more ambitious..and daily specials that reflect the bounty of the season....but save room for the desserts....don't skip the lemon mousse...but don't stop there..everything is homemade and amazing. Gorgeous setting, cafeteria quality food. The waitress telling me I couldn't have my chicken without breading because "it I comes that way" should have been the tipoff. Spinach gazpacho was gelatinous. The chicken I did order was so infused with water my husband traded his steak with me. It was better, kind of like pot roast. Vegetables were decent. "Lemon mousse with berries" consisted of flavorless pudding garnished with three blackberries and two razor thin slices of strawberries. Good coffee though. It's the setting that sells this place. Next time we will pack a lunch. read more
