    Turkey & Swiss Sandwich
    Anokhy D.

We went in for a late weekend lunch and hit the post church crowd so service was slow, but we expected it. We got the chicken pesto sandwich with fries and the turkey swiss sandwich with sweet potato fries. It's a decent cafe and you can expect to get exactly what's listed on the menu, no frills.

Having been to their opening I took my boyfriend back for an after movie dinner date. We ordered the roast half chicken, lemon chicken, and the bruschetta. Roast half chicken was good, lemon chicken pretty good, but lacked some seasoning. The pesto pasta salad side was very dry and had no seasoning at all. We got up for salt and pepper as everything seemed under seasoned this time. I added balsamic vinegar and oil to the pasta salad to liven it up a bit. The bruschetta was the biggest disappointment as it is just bread, not toasted, smeared with roasted red peppers and pesto. The manager came by and we shared our thoughts on the bread. She did offer to take it off the bill, but we ate it so we said it was fine. She did say however they had no way to toast bread. This seemed weird as they cook entrees and have grilled chicken. Both seem like ways to toast bread, and seem especially weird to not be able to toast in a place that sells sandwiches.

This is definitely a nice spot for a quick fresh lunch! They have a lot of salad, sandwich and soup options. Everything tastes pretty good, but nothing necessarily stood out to me. I wish the chicken pesto sandwich was more toasted and the cheese was melted. I had to ask them to heat my sandwich up because it wasn't warm as it should've been. The Caesar salad tasted pretty standard. I did enjoy the dressing they used. My favorite part was the macaroni and cheese. It tasted like good quality cheese was used and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a lot of seating open and it had a very cute and modern vibe to the place. You order at a counter and get a number before sitting down and you get your food delivered to you. There was no one in like when we went so we ordered quickly and got our food within 10 minutes. If you're looking for a quick lunch spot with a variety of options I would recommend this!

A lot of health options. Food: Good. Service: OK. Cashless available. Plenty of staff. Environmental: new, clean. Outside patio.

What is this!? I paid $17 for this entree and this is the amount of rice they gave me. This is ridiculous. Very disappointing, because I usually enjoy this place and visit often.

Take out area. Zoom in and you can see my order that should of been on the shelf to the left. Waited 10 minutes to find that out.

Piss poor service to start with. First time visiting so when I walked in I wasn't sure how to get the online order we placed. Once I made to the register the gentleman showed me where to wait. When I first walked in I saw a bag on the counter and assumed it was someone else's but after being there nearly 10 minutes, the bag I first saw was actually our order, so express at preparing they are but not at placing the order in your hands. When I made it back to the office I got a turkey club instead of a chicken salad. Not impressed at all. What food I did get was good but it wasn't what I wanted. Dine in if you want to try this place that way you can send it back if it's wrong.

In the culinary world, at least when it comes to beef, prime has a special meaning, but the menu does not indicate any use of prime beef. Aside from my initial disappointment, they have a nice range of dishes ranging from soups to rice dishes, vermicelli, as well as a few classics (bo ne, bo kho, and bun bo hue). Their noodle soups are on the pricy side ranging from 13-32, but the higher priced ones are the more premium meats you don't see as often at Vietnamese soup kitchens like short rib, brisket, smoked brisket, bone marrow and oxtail. I chose the bo ne since it has a great price point at only $17, but I did add the bone marrow since I wanted to see how they make/present it. The dish also comes with a small salad. The rest of the table ordered soup and an egg sandwich. No complaints from the rest of my group that ordered soups, so it must have been good. The egg sandwich just comes with a french bread. Bo Ne - comes in a cast iron skillet with chinese sausage and tender chunks of tenderloin. This also came with 2 french bread loaves, plenty to make 2-3 small sandwiches, if you choose to eat it that way. Also included is a ramekin with butter and pate. I immediately noticed the bone marrow did not come in the skillet and figured it may come on a different plate, depending on its size. I have ordered bone marrow at other restaurants and its an elaborate presentation, but here its just one small bone sliced in half, which I later found out. I notified the waitress, and she went back to the kitchen to see what happened to my bone marrow and came out a couple of minutes later telling me that it will take about 10 minutes to make and will be comped. I breathed a slight sign of relief at that point because it would be painful for them to forget one of my items which I paid extra for, and they not only failed to bring it out, but it also came late. When it finally came out from the kitchen, I scooped some out onto a sandwich and took a bite only to realize that part of the marrow was actually cold. This tells me they likely keep the bone refrigerated (or frozen) prior to being ordered and the chef doesn't know how to properly re-heat it when preparing it. For an $8 add-on to an entree, this is just unacceptable. Other than the bone marrow snafu, this restaurant is pretty good and located in an excellent spot within the shopping center.

Black Walnut uses the Pay Before Eating concept which I have mixed feelings about. It makes me feel like I'm at a fast food place but the food is anything but the usual stuff most fast food places serve and in all my times eating here the food has been very good. It just seems odd to order at the counter and pay first. I think the idea is that it is faster for staff, a server will bring you your food and refill drinks. And on the plus side, you don't have to try to get the attention of your server when you are done to get a check and pay.; you just get up and leave. I kind of wonder if their servers get the same kind of tips as they would if you paid at the end. OK, about our lunch. It was very good. Searching for a banh mi sandwich with tofu for a quick lunch takeout, I was pleased to see that the restaurant was close to interstate 45 for a quick stop on the way back to Houston (timing is everything to beat the traffic in this area - IYKYK). I ended up ordering both the tofu vermicelli and a tofu banh mi because obviously, you need to try more than one thing. It was fine. Out of the two dishes, the vermicelli was my favorite. It came with a generous portion of noodles, a small lettuce and shredded carrot salad, several large wedges of tofu in a kind of curry sauce, and the classic vermicelli sauce to drizzle over the whole dish. The flavor was good, although what I would consider a slight deviation from traditional flavors, and overall filling. Vermicelli is always a dependable choice and I was satisfied with this dish. The tofu banh mi, however was nothing special. I prefer the bread to be a bit more crispy on the outside with a soft interior and this one was fairly soft all over. Inside, the tofu really needed more seasoning, seemingly cooked without any added flavors except for the fried finish. I added some hoisin sauce but still it needed something more. I'm always eager to try new places but not sure that this one will be a repeat for me.
