Stopped in for a pick-me-up for the short drive back to Huntsville earlier this week. Work takes…read moreme to Decatur from time to time and I'll definitely be back! This is a cute little coffee shop / gift shop type of place in downtown Decatur. Being that it's downtown, parking is a little bit of a hassle. I didn't have a hard time finding a spot midday on a Wednesday, but be careful backing out as you're backing right into the street. Inside, the shop is spacious and decorated nicely. It felt airy and peaceful and I could easily see myself catching up with a friend or reading or something. They have a midsize coffee menu, serve Piper and Leaf tea, and have some typical coffeeshop snacks (pastries, etc). One nice feature is a fridge with take and bake type meals and appetizers. That can prove really useful in a pinch! Service was extra nice here: welcoming smiles, patient with questions, and working efficiently. I appreciated that you can actually order a small iced coffee here. Many places only do iced in medium or large portion sizes. The small was just enough to perk me up for the ride home, but not so much I'd have to stop for a restroom, lol. I ordered an iced peppermint mocha as that's pretty much my favorite coffee drink of all time. This one was a good one! Not too strong on the peppermint and a discernible - maybe even stronger than average - chocolatey taste. Like a liquid thin mint! :) I enjoyed my drink on my drive home and look forward to returning for more next time I find myself in the area.

This restaurant is across the street from the fairly popular Francesco's Italian restaurant. Having been there before, I didn't have any troubles locating this place. The parking lot is a little rugged in spots but at least there's plenty of space. The inside is a little sparse but there's ample seating and some kind of cool drawings hanging on the walls. A portrait of who I can only assume to be Minnie Lee is near the entrance. Food is served cafeteria style by some very nice people. Seriously, the service was so warm and sweet. We felt very welcomed there. We both decided on fried chicken for lunch. My mom got the last breast from the batch so I wound up with a thigh, which isn't my favorite piece but I still like it okay. You can have more than two sides if you wish, but we didn't. I chose yams and fried potatoes as mine, while my mom got yams and cabbage. Note that their cabbage is cooked with sausage. For bread, they offered standard cornbread muffins or hot water cornbread, which the friendly staff recommended (good choice!). We both opted for sweet tea to drink. I'm not sure of the price because of course my mom snuck in and paid for both of our meals before I could notice! Lol. We found a clean booth and dug in quickly. Overall, the food was pretty good! This isn't necessarily a new favorite soul food place for me, but I'd definitely come back. The best item was honestly the cabbage! My mom let me taste a bite. So flavorful and perfect texture. This is real, southern-style cabbage (which is to say, probably not great for you...but quite tasty!). The hot water cornbread was also really good. It's different than the hot water cornbread I've had in the past; this version was very crispy on the outside with super soft, almost gooey, corny inside. It was yummy. The yams were also solid! Not the best I've ever had (flavor kind of one-note), but they were sweet and soft. The fried potatoes and fried chicken were both just okay. The fried potatoes weren't super hot or crispy, but the added flavor from the onions was nice. The fried chicken's breading was crispy and flavorful enough, but the meat, even on the thigh, was a bit dry. Neither were bad, but if I return in the future, I'd probably try something else first. We were too full for dessert, but they had pecan pie and banana pudding on display. Overall, lovely service and tasty food make this a solid option in the area.

Ok, I know when you're trying to think of some place to satisfy that lunch time craving a hospital might not be your first choice, but maybe it should be. It has an entrance to the outside so you don't even have to enter the hospital to get to it.They've recently remodeled the cafe so it's clean and they have more menu options. They have: a rotating hot bar with two meat choices and several vegetables. You can call ahead to find out what the selection is.each item is priced individually two soup selections (may not be in the summer)$2.59 for a 12 oz cup salad bar-pay $0.39 per ounce serve yourself pizza- pay per slice consistant choice of hamburgers, chicken fingers, fries with additional rotating option grab and go selection of desserts The pizza is DELICIOUS. The supreme has bookoos of toppings, it's super cheesy, the crust is the perfect combo of chewy and crispy, and the crust rim is sprinkled with savory herbs. Finger licking good. One huge slice of the supreme was $3.59. They also have a pepperoni and cheese pizza available. The salad is fresh, not dry like bagged lettuce. There's an option of romaine or iceberg with carrots and purple cabbage. Plenty of toppings to choose from. Unfortunately no lite salad dressings. If you get a chance to try the broccoli soup, DO! It hits you with a wonderful array of flavors...pepper, garlic, cheese, sweetness from the carrots. Plus you get a serving of veggies right? Ok maybe not the best way to get your veggies but it's gooood! Plus since everything is pre-prepared and serve yourself or served cafeteria style then you're in and out quickly.

The food was good, albeit cold because the air conditioning was on when it was only 60 degrees outside. By the time I walked from the serving line to the cashier, from the cashier to the "do it yourself" coffee station and then to my table. The eggs were luke warm at best and the biscuit was COLD. I was one of three "customers" for the 7:00 AM start; however, the staff was standing around waiting to open but tables were dirty. One had an entire salt shaker of salt all over it. How is this possible at 7:00 AM when you haven't served the first customer on a Monday morning? Two trash cans, neither near an exit door.

I came by here a couple weeks ago looking for a late, light lunch and some coffee for the drive…read morehome after work around Decatur. I love all nerdy things and had pinned Current on my to-try collection a while back. It's a little easy to miss driving around, but my GPS got me there. Parking is pretty limited -- the business next door had to ask some people to move because they'd created a spot behind the worker's truck, lol -- but I had a lovely experience once I found my way inside! They have a pretty large menu for a game cafe, and much of it is vegan or vegetarian. Pressed sandwiches, burgers, baked goodies, smoothies, all kinds of coffee drinks, and salads/wraps. I wanted something warm, light, and comforting. As simple as it may be, I was thrilled to find a pressed PB&J on the menu for a low price. I was offered my selection of a surprisingly large number of jellies (strawberry for me!) and my sandwich came out quickly. I had both a sweet tea and a latte -- hydration and stimulation! Lol. The food was good, and my mint mocha latte tasted just like an Andes mint. My favorite part of this place, though, is the vibe! Nerdy and inclusive. Wish all places could be like that. :) Fun merchandise from all kinds of anime, shows, games, movies, etc; board games; a tidy all-gender restroom; Pride flags of different flavors everywhere...it really did feel like a pocket of welcomeness. I don't see enough spaces like that in the southeast, sadly, and so it's extra nice when you do come across it. There were lots of teens and folks wearing alternative style hanging around in cozy couches and tables playing games and I just love to see it! While the game and card selection isn't /massive/, it's perfectly satisfying (remember -- not a ton of space in the building) and the staff was more than willing to help with people's questions. This is a wonderful space to hang out, make new friends (if games/anime/nerd culture is your scene), and grab a bite to eat. Give it a go if it sounds like your speed!
