First had Cafe d'avignon bread when I used to buy it from whole foods so I knew it would be pretty good. This photo is from the first time I went but have since been numerous times as I spend a lot of time in the LES. Almond croissant was solid but it wasn't as buttery/flaky as I would have liked. Coffee was mid-- if you're already at Essex Market would try porto coffee shop just around the corner. If you like the loaves at whole foods they also sell a bunch of specialty ones in the cafes which you can have sliced for you. The one with kalamata olives goes great with some feta eggs!

Salami pickle sandwich

My friend and I stopped by Cafe d'Avignon in Essex Market for a quick lunch when we were exploring in the Lower East Side a few weeks ago, and it was a great stop for a quick little lunch. I grabbed their Salami pickle sandwich (salami, cheese, pickles, and Dijon mustard) - super simple and delicious. A great lunch on the go. My friend grabbed that and a croissant. Service was good, and it was such a fast option considering we didn't order anything that needed prep or heating at all. It was perfect since it allowed us to take our lunch on the go - we continued to walk around the LES for a while and then finished up in Bryant Park a little bit later since we had a matinee show. Definitely a place I wouldn't mind grabbing a lunch on the go from again in the future (you can also enjoy your purchases in the market if you prefer, of course)!

Country bacon & egg bun, banana bread

First time in Essex Market! Super cool love me a little market with European vibes. Arrived just a couple minutes after opening and there were 4 customers waiting for orders already! Got a country bacon & egg bun and a slice of banana bread. The sammie was surprisingly good for a brekkie sammie, soft eggs not overcooked and tasty crisp bacon, poppy seed roll brought it all together. Kinda pricey though especially for a bfast sammie. Banana bread was so good! Could've ate two. You get a large slice for about $5. Everything looks very fresh so definitely returning to try more breads and bfast treats.

We visited Cafe d'Avignon for our order on TooGoodToGo and it was a decent experience. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. We got a loaf of Brioche Bread and one Ham & Cheese Croissant. It wasn't the most valuable surprise bag we got from TooGoodToGo but it's still a good deal. Their pastries were delicious, especially the croissant, which is crispy with flavorful filling.

Hot Earl Grey Tea

Good tea, but such a frustrating experience this time around. I've been taking quite a few online courses this semester, so I thought I'd head to Essex Market bright and early, grab a coffee or tea at Cafe d'Avignon, and make my way upstairs to get some work done and be productive. While I usually drink cold drinks, even in the winter, I figured I'd change things up for once, and ordered a hot earl grey tea. I went upstairs, settled down, and took a picture (a few pictures, really) before opening the lid and taking a sip. And then from there, it all went south. The cup would not stop leaking!! When I first noticed the light water ring on the table, I ignored it, passing it off as condensation from when I first opened the lid. So, I put a few napkins under the cup and continued with my work, but when the napkins only got wetter, I knew something was wrong. I picked up the cup and noticed tea was dripping from the seam... not even from the top of the cup seam, near the lid, but rather at the very bottom. And at a rate of one drop every two seconds... excuse me?? I ended up only drinking a few sips before throwing the rest away. Very disappointed and still so confused by the entirety of it all -- never had this happen before.

Amazingggg! Literally reminded me of how they made coffee in Italy when I visited! The cappuccinos were delish!!!! The service was so kind the pastries were pretty good, depending on what you get. Ask, then to heat it up for you. Located on the first floor in Essex Market

Roasted Tomato and Feta Pastry and Iced Vanilla Latte

My go-to coffee shop in LES! Located in Essex Market, Cafe d'Avignon will seriously never let you down. I've been here 8-10 times now, tried several drinks and food items, and haven't been disappointed. They definitely make the best iced vanilla latte in my opinion, and the service is always exceptional.

Coconut Chocolate Croissant ($4.75) Cold Brew ($4.50)

Must try: Coconut Chocolate Croissant and/or Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant with a Cold Brew! Why: I fell in love with the Coconut Chocolate Croissant just looking at it and my love grew after the first bite! The buttery and flaky croissant was heavenly and you know it's delicious when you make a mess after each bite. Shamelessly, I also got the Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant, which was also really good.

Pain au chocolat, chocolate sea salt cookie
Peggy C.

Solid bakery with lots of appealing options. I ordered a pain au chocolat, my barometer for French bakeries. It was not bad, but not amazing. Almost too flaky and missing that wow factor. The sea salt chocolate cookie was great though. Complex and just decadent enough without making you feel heavy afterward. I tried a bite of their seeded sourdough loaf too. Very interesting and probably yummy with butter. I'd definitely come back to try other goodies.

Sunny and Annie's - Biden Sandwich on a hero

Sunny and Annie's

((4.5 stars)) Sunny…read moreand Annie's is very much a 24/7 neighborhood gem of a corner store and deli. it's packed with packaged foods--candy, chips, cookies, ice cream, soft drinks, beer, and a lot more plus the deli counter serves ups an endless list of creative sandwiches. i am not going to say this place is cramped but it kinda is. for example, if people stand in the wrong areas of the store, it will cause a complete standstill of a traffic jam in the store. my advice: order from the deli (and stand somewhere people aren't trying to get to) or grab whatever you need, pay, and leave. this place is not a place to linger. keep it moving. anyway, the obvious draw of Sunny & Annie's is the endless list of sandwiches that are handwritten cards that are stuck outside glass of the deli counter. there is literally something for the pickiest eaters--from hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, wraps, and more. some sandwiches are named celebrities, politicians, etc. i have ordered a bunch of different sandwiches and have not made it through much of the menu. you can also create your own Frankenstein monster of a sandwich. while the sandwiches are a big part of the draw, the insane amount of snack foods crammed into the store is quite remarkable from the large stand of Doritos, Takis, Cheetos and other popular branded snack foods in the front to the separate stand of Wise snacks to an entire back corner of the store filled with all kinds of chips, popcorn, etc. imo, Sunny's has the freshest-tasting Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn. i know an insane take consider it's a packaged popcorn snack from a megacorp (PepsiCo), but i'll die on this hill. maybe it's cause Sunny's sells a lot of Smartfood popcorn so it gets refreshed often, maybe they have a secret in/pipelinbe from the factory, or it's just magic/alchemy. i don't know, but the Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn never tastes stale-ish like it does at grocery stores, the bags never feel deflated because they have been on shelf long, and the popcorn never has that soft mouthy feel but still has the crunch to it. maybe it's just me, but Sunny's serves a great list of sandwiches...AND the freshest Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn. beyond the snacks, the service from the deli to cashier is upbeat and friendly. in all seriousness, Sunny and Annie's is an Avenue B institution at this point and remains a charming family-owned store--and is NOT a sterile modern clone of a neighborhood business.

Today, I got a PISILLO panini with ciabatta bread and it was so damn big! I had half of it for lunch and the other half will be saved for my dinner! This panini was just too long and big. I had to open my mouth really wide to take bites out of the big panini and it was annoying. It tasted good though! I love the balsamic dressing, arugula, tomatoes, and bufula mozz cheese the most out of the whole sandwich! The dressing made it really good and soften the ciabatta bread for easier chewing. My poor mouth and teeth! The whole panini cost $22.21 including tax in cash. There was an atm machine by the entrance in case you don't have cash. The whole place was very cozy and tight knit chairs and tables on both sides of the restaurant. The staff was very fast and I got my panini in not time. I did not have to wait that long. I was just amazed at the size of the ciabatta bread. They had many different types of bread that I can try next time like the focaccia, sfilatino, and semolina bread that looked really good behind the display glass. They got 35 different types of panini sandwiches for you to choose from. Most of them contain meat and there are some vegetarian options that are not so pricey. I will try those next time!

There are a handful of tables indoors and outdoors which is great since you can enjoy your warm sandwich immediately. I looooved the Ross sandwich--it came with turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing all in a delicious semolina sub roll. I also got a bottle of the ginger lemonade which was good. Every visit reminds you why Parisi has survived since 1903 while trends and neighbors came and went. Let's talk about The Dennis--the undisputed star and a true signature sandwich. This thing is a monster, built on Parisi's legendary fresh-baked bread that somehow stays crisp, chewy, and perfect no matter how much goodness gets piled inside. You get a crispy breaded chicken cutlet layered with thin-sliced prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, sliced tomatoes, and (if you know what you're doing) roasted red peppers. It's all brought together with their house balsamic blend and basil herb spread/pesto--bright, savory, and completely addictive. I cannot confirm or deny that the sandwich is named after me, but I can confirm it's flawless. Pro tips: * Cash only, old-school rules apply. * Come hungry or plan ahead--this sandwich is big enough to share or save half for later, and it still eats beautifully round two. * Tip the sandwich makers. These folks are artists, and the tip box deserves some love. Beyond the food, Parisi is living New York history. From its origins as an Italian bakery on Mott Street, to feeding generations of locals, to being famously beloved by Frank Sinatra (yes, the bread was shipped to California), this place is woven into the fabric of Little Italy/Nolita. Legends like De Niro and Scorsese are fans, and you can still feel that old-world soul--right down to the original brick oven relic resting in the basement. Parisi isn't just a deli. It's continuity. It's tradition. It's proof that when you do one thing incredibly well for over a century, people keep coming back. And once you've had The Dennis, you will too.
