If yelp had 1/2 stars this would get 4 1/2 Driving through on our way to San Antonio from Tucson= 13 hour drive without any stops. We knew we'd need a break for lunch and there's not much between EP and SA. Traveling w 2dogs, so dog friendly is our first priority. Did a quick search for dog friendly restaurants and only 3 came up, Cafe Central and 2 Sonic drive ins. Our 2nd priority was finding a place we could easily get in and out of with my broken foot/knee scooter (parking, accessibility, etc). I'll break my review down by the staff first, then the other key aspects: Hostess (Suzanne?): very helpful and nice on the phone when we called ahead to verify dogs allowed, and when we called when we were lost. When we arrived she was kind, warm, clearly enjoys her job and loves the restaurant. Was nice even when our snippy dog barked at her. Valet: nice, patient, made us feel like our satisfaction was all that mattered. Manger (Diego): another employee who clearly takes pride in his job. Stepped up to make sure we were taken care of and felt comfortable. Server (Marvin?): prompt, attentive, knew the menu thoroughly, went the extra mile= brought waters for our dogs, made sure they had everything they needed. When I needed to use the restroom he helped me get out of my chair, navigate through to the ladies room, and even opened the restroom door for me. Patio: lovely! Great set up with plenty of room between tables, easy to Tie dogs. High misters and fans that kept the temp comfortable and drowned out the noise of the busy streets surrounding the cafe. Flat screen TVs which would be great for watching a game during happy hour, Sunday football, etc. Decor: very nice, high end, but not gaudy. Wonderful smelling candle, mouthwash, hand towels in the restroom. Drinks: we both had the Central Margarita on rocks w/salt. Delicious and refreshing,$11 each. They have a large selection of bottle beer, signature cocktails and liquor ranging from $8-$225, so something for everyone. Water glasses were always kept full and icey. Food (not sure if lunch menu is different than dinner, but I'm assuming it is--we had lunch) this was the star of the meal! Great price for the quality. My husband had the Puntas de Filete--served with peppers, veggies, mashed potatoes, and a roasted jalapeño. Steak was perfectly cooked and the chili and jalapeño complimented it perfectly. I had the Bistro Tender with Brussels sprouts and sweet potato purée. Yum, yum, yum! Perfect combination of flavors and perfectly cooked/seasoned meat. Each dish was $19. Overall a great deal with great quality, superb customer service. read more

Since our 10th anniversary was on 30 Nov, we decided to go here. I will be honest and tell you that if you are thinking about going to Cafe Central, stop thinking and go!! The staff is awesome and warm hearted with all their words. I cannot remember the female who helped us get there, but she went as far as walking to the adjacent corner, met us, and guided us back to the restaurant. This is definitely something that can only be described as dedicated. The food was a 10. The waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the dishes. The food was ordered and arrived quickly with accuracy. At no fault of the staff and owner of Cafe Central, the only draw back was the construction and several blocked off streets that night. I recommend this establishment to any and all! read more

Place is beautiful. Make reservations beforehand. Nice setting. Romantic. Waiter was excellent in the beginning and kinda veered another direction towards the end. They didn't refill the water fast enough. We ordered the calamari for an appetizer. Let's just say I had better. The green Chile soup was excellent. This is a must order item. It went well with the cheddar bread. A server walks around to ask if you would like bread. He came to our table once. We ordered the ribeye which was excellent! and cooked how we asked. The mashed potatoes were overpowered by rosemary. Ordered a creme brûlée for dessert. Sugar was a little too thick for my liking. Next time I would order the chocolate soufflé where they covered it with a white chocolate dome. They poured hot chocolate to break the dome. Looked amazing. Overall the taste was great! read more

I am amazed that this place doesn't have a consistent 5* on Yelp. Great location, great menu with lots of unique options, reasonable prices, and amazing service. Food was delicious when my wife and I ate here on 3/5/21 and Andrea was an incredible server. Live piano was a nice touch. Very classy place - glad it was a 2 minute walk from out hotel downtown! Will definitely return when in the area next. read more

The website let me order food for delivery. I called restaurant within 2 minutes of placing the order and was told their delivery person went home for the night. They offered for me to pick up the food instead. I was working which is why I chose delivery. The restaurant canceled the order and never sent confirmation of refunding amount charged to my card. I called the following day to confirm the refund but the staff directed me to try calling back to speak to a manager. Managers were at work the night my order was placed yet they did not take care of the refund? Be careful about ordering anything from this place. read more

The only redeeming part, and therefore worthy of only one star, was the amazing sommelier. He made a great recommendation! We had a reservation for 7:30, didn't get drinks for 15 minutes, didn't get bread for another 20, & didn't get food until 8:50. The steaks were rushed and tough (waste of a quality cut). I ordered a medium rare filet and received a pile of precut, well done slices on an over sauced spoon of mashed potatoes. The service was nonexistent. The manager never showed his face, even after server said she would notify him of my dissatisfaction. Party of SIX had required automatic 20% gratuity on the bill. read more

It is one of my favorite places to go. However, last night the food was not good at all. for two out meal was just about 400.00. The drinks were the only reason for my star because they were made very well. the server never even filled our glass of water and we sat with nothing for what seemed to be hours. The meat plate was extreamly over cooked. we were never asked if we needed anything, if the food was cooked correctly, litterly nothing. so we had burnt meat and nothing to drink or sauce to use to help eat the horrible food. read more

This place was absolutely amazing! A little on the higher price end but man, from the bread, to the green chile soup, to the ribeye we were not disappointed. Still can't get over it and will definitely be back. Only sad we didn't know about this place sooner. read more

Excellent place to eat! The food is fantastic! Levi the Bartender makes excellent drinks and has great customer Service. The grilled calamari is the best I have ever had. The atmosphere is outstanding with live music it's stands far above most of the restaurants I have been to here in El Paso. It reminds me of Truluck's in Austin and Dallas. Minus not having stone crab claws definitely beat food I have had here in El Paso. read more

This is the finest restaurant El Paso has to offer. Though having undergone a change in ownership and management several years ago, the current management has maintained the same menu, high standards, and consistency the previous owner was known for. On our recent visit, we enjoyed a cup of Cafe Central's famous green Chile soup as always. This creamy moderately spicy soup is maybe their most popular dish. We also loved the escargot, prepared traditionally in garlic butter and with simple crostini. It's difficult to select our favorite entree. The Chilean sea bass and tenderloin are equally consistent and always expertly prepared. The lamb is perfect and that brings me to the subject of selection. Unlike steakhouses, Cafe Central is equally asdept with poultry, seafood, and fish. Great variety. A word of caution about the wine list. It is not unusual for Cafe Central to list wines and vintages that are out of stock. We occasionally end up settling on a second or even third selection. On this visit, we were in luck. Overall, Cafe Central us during in all cylinders. Solid service, elegant, comfortable atmosphere, and impeccably prepared cuisine. read more

Superb steaks and entrees. This is the place to take customers and clients. Great for closing deals. A little on the pricey side, but well worth the money. Wine selection was great. Recommend the green chile soup, must have. Ribeye was tasty. Chilean Sea Bass was so so. Filet was delicious. read more

I have always been impressed by the food and quality of service here. Seafood has been consistently excellent.

Excellent service and food. Unmatched in the local area. Highly recommend and I will be visiting again soon

Ordered appetizer. It never came despite 2 servers being told and being assured it was coming out. Entrees came out but no appetizer. My steak was warm, not hot. It took about 4 minutes to melt. I know this because I asked 2 servers for a steak knife since it wasn't provided. The steak knife came 10 minutes later at which time I asked for the manager which took another 5 minutes. My wife was nearly finished with her entrée and I did not start on mine as it was now luke warm and I had lost my appetite. So my dinner consisted of 2 pieces of bread and water. I asked for the meal to be comped which the manager did. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! read more

Amazing food and very tentative servers. The sommelier was extremely helpful in choosing great wine pairings for our food. We started with the calamari which was so delicious and you get a ton for the price! We shared some of the green chili soup-to die for. And then we got escargot and the Chilean seabass for supper-literally melts in your mouth. Probably our favorite fine dining restaurant in El Paso and perfect for a nice date night!! read more

We had the opportunity to dine at this establishment and was impressed on the beauty of the place and it made you feel like you stepped back into the roaring 20's! There was a lounge singer who sang very well! The atmosphere is what you would expect from a $$$ restaurant. I gave this a three for one reason.....mediocre service for such a high priced place! We were seated and the first thing we received is butter! No water or menus or enough plates for the bread. We didn't get bread until 10 minutes later. Didn't see the waiter until someone else asked if someone had helped us? I know it was a Friday during a holiday season but if someone is going to spend $$$ it should be quicker. So that's not what the three stars were for! After an elaborate description of the soups, such as cream of chili, which I wanted to try...we never even received our soups or salad. There was such a long period of time before the entrees came after the appetizer don't get me wrong the food was very good! It just wasn't great service! They took off $30 on the final bill they did that on their own the waiter would apologize and we never did complain to anyone during the dinner because we enjoyed the conversation with another couple but the place needs a lot of work with service! Probably not coming back anytime soon! read more

I've been here twice and both times were phenomenal! Dinner with a girlfriend a few years ago and lunch after comic con this year. Service and food have been impeccable each time. Valet service is very helpful as parking downtown can be a huge bother. There's also a piano bar in the evening hours. Decor and ambiance could do with an upgrade but all in all I highly recommend this restaurant for romantic dinner, drinks or just a special lunch! read more

Sat at the bar last night for dinner while in town for business. Food was good but service from bartender left much to be desired. She was pleasant and polite to most. This restaurant is undeniably among the best restaurants in El Paso. The food is consistently outstanding and the service is impeccable. I've been going to this restaurant for years and it has always proven itself to be the class restaurant of this community. My lunch yesterday consisted of the sesame tuna which was just outstanding. The server could not have been more attentive, the atmosphere could not have been more congenial, and the overall experience was simply outstanding. I could not recommend this restaurant any more than simply saying that is the best in El Paso and an experience not to miss. Thank you for always being the best read more

The atmosphere of this restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, especially at night. For a romantic date, this is a good spot. That said, it isn't perfect. One frustrating thing for me was that our waiter was annoying. I chose not to drink at dinner, and he would not leave me alone because of it. I got a lot of condescending "ummm, you're not getting any drinks? just water? you sure? seriously, no drinks?" type attitude and it made me uncomfortable. Maybe he just thinks this place has really great drinks but it's not part of his job description to make customers feel awkward about what they want to order. As far as the food, it was pretty good. I wouldn't say it was out of this world, but the menu variety was definitely above what you'd normally find in El Paso. I had the octopus carpaccio for an appetizer and the prawns for my meal, and I was satisfied. The portions aren't huge, but you expect that at this type of restaurant. Surprisingly, the desserts were affordable and tasty. Good enough that I'd say this place is worth a stop just to chat over coffee and a slice of cake. Or creme brulee. read more

I had a New York steak that was over cooked and a good wine. Service was subpar and overall I would recommend this place 2 stars. The waiter constantly filled everyone's wine glasses while skipping over me even though I was out. Hit or miss. Some very good some very bad. Let me start with, the service was was great. But it's the food we are paying such a high price for, right? We had the octopus carpaccio for an appetizer. It was amazingly good, the best thing we had all evening. The breads are offered in a basket that you can chose a flavor or style from. It was good flavor and fresh made in house (it seemed). But the thickness of the crust was about a 1/4", and so hard that I described it as "cut your gums" crunchy. My wife's beet salad with goat cheese was a work of art. Almost too pretty to eat, but she did anyway. And it was good. I had the clam chowder. The waiter described it as traditional New England style. Um, no, it's not. It was very disappointing. It's a thick potato soup with 1 clam in the whole bowl. Almost as if it was an afterthought because it needed at least one clam to be called clam chowder. (You can see my clam chowder reviews from New England) My wife had a steak (the eye of the ribeye) with lobster mac and cheese. She said it was the best steak she has had in years. And the lobster Mac she found to be very good. )$72?!!! I had the lobster ravioli with a lobster tail on the side. The ravioli themselves were excellent, but the sauce that went on them was completely wrong. The sauce was overpowering the subtle flavor of the ravioli. It didn't compliment the dish, it overtook it. And the sauce was thick, almost like my plate was sitting on the hot line for 10 minutes waiting for my wife's dish. And my lobster tail addition... I've had jerky that was more tender. It had the softness of a soft soled rubber sandal. Very over cooked. I needed a steak knife to cut it. And the preparation required me to use my hands to dig into the shell to get the meat out. For a $27 6oz tail, can you please get the meat sitting out so that I don't need to wash my hands in the middle of the meal? Please? We tried the mango cream pie for dessert. Again, very disappointing. It's a thick fat cream pie with the mango added as an afterthought. We were hoping for something with some nice fruity flavor, and got a flavorless cream pie with a couple minuscule pieces of mango in it. I think we ate half of it, it was that bad. The wine list is extensive. Plenty to chose from. Maybe too long actually. My seat was with my back to the room, and I felt like I had my back against I10. There seemed to be constant foot traffic within a foot behind me. And we were seated in the middle of the restaurant. Then to end the night, the valet tried to give me the keys to the wrong car that he brought down for me. Seriously he tried to give me the wrong car. All in all, $270 for a pretty disappointing experience. read more

My husband and I went to the resturant on Wednesday around 2 p.m. When we arrived the hostess was busy seating a large party in the bar. A waiter Took us to a table near the kitchen. At this point we were the only people in the dining room. Soon, two other tables were occupied. The other tables got service and we had to keep asking for service, which never improved over our visit. After we finally recieved our food, the green chili soup was not flavorful and overly salted. My chilian sea bass was inedible because it was so heavily breaded that you could only taste flour, not the fish or the sauce. What a huge letdown and waste of money. We will not return and will advise our friends of our experience. read more

Fantastic overall experience, service was excellent and the food was sublime. Our waiter, Saul, came and introduced himself by name and welcomed us to the restaurant. I have been coming to Cafe Central for over 20 years and last nights visit may be my last. Food quality and service have sharply declined. We had numerous issues beginning with the appetizer plates coming to the table dirty. There was a chunk of chocolate cake stuck to the bottom of one plate and something sticky on the other. The old food left a brown streak across the table cloth when the plate was removed (gross). We ordered a dirty martini with blue cheese olives and a sweet drink with orange zest was brought instead. It took 20 minutes to get a new drink. Service was generally slow and there were several empty tables in the main room so not sure why it was so bad. What really ruined the meal was the incredibly thin and over cooked salmon entree that I received. We did politely bring these issues to the attention of the server and his response was to cry out "aieee." Not sure if that was meant as an apology or just a wail of acknowledgment at the abysmal service. This was meant to be a celebratory night and instead turned into an experience of frustration and disappointment. I don't like to leave negative reviews, but this was the second disappointing visit to Cafe Central in just a couple of months. read more

"Don't blame me , I didn't mess up your order" snapped a waitress when we were trying to compliment her establishment on a delish cheesecake. Let's be kind and rewind how our night developed to this awkward scenario.Traveling to El Paso on business we were told this is the place to try the GREEN CHILE SOUP. When we arrived we felt pretty under dressed since everyone inside was pretty suit and tie ready. The hostess recommended that we sit outside on a lovely weather evening, we agreed with her and were promptly seated. For starters we were offered to choose two kinds of bread from a basket. Chose the CHEESE and JALAPENO options. The bread tasted bland with no real flavor or lingering appeal. First thing on my mind was the soup that brought us here. Along with it I ordered the ANGUS RIBEYE+ CHIPOTLE LIME BUTTER+DAILY WHIPPED POTATOES (Substituted the Seasoned Onion Rings)+LOBSTER GRUYERE MAC N CHEESE. The soup was truly delish with a cream-like consistency with the Chile not being too over powering or even spicy. The entrees were served with a beautiful presentation. The taste? Amazing! The Ribeye melted with the chipotle lime butter, the whipped potatoes tasted "fresh out of the box" :( Lobster Mac n Cheese is worth every penny! We ordered dessert, Crème Brûlée was my poison for the evening, half of our team orders Cheesecake. Their cheesecake comes out in no time. 20 minutes later the second half of the table hasn't received their orders, including mine. We contact the manager on duty, since our waitress is MIA,who in turn contacts the kitchen. Our desserts come out along with the lost waitress with no apologies for the delay: Mine is cold, the finishing touches on a crème brûlée is the torching, this probably had occurred 24 hrs before I ordered it. My colleagued ordered CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES that came out stuck, like super-glue, to his plate. Cue scene to second waitress who comes out and snaps back with negative comment. Let's just say that before we could digest our food, our stomachs were upset by how unprofessional the wait staff had treated us. read more

Lets start off this review by stating a few facts.....we are not living in San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York or L.A. We live in El Paso. We are not a town full of elegant eating establishment. Ok, everyone following so far? Cafe Central is what you get when you have an attempt of an elegant restaurant in a place such as El Paso. This is no diss to El Paso but come on, we are not a major metropolitan city with sky scrapers, 4 star restaurants or nation known attractions. With that being said, Cafe Central is the best we have when it comes to the combination of; fine dining, elegant endowments and top notch service. This is not to say that Cafe Central flies in excellence with these three traits, only that out of all the options we have (and seriously, if you count Cattlemans, Ardovino's or Mesa Street Grill as fine dining...somethings is obviously wrong with you.) Cafe Central is the best to be picked from. So, the restaurant itself is nothing exceptionally special. The menu is always pretty standard, nothing too daring to try. They will occasionally have a small band or pianist playing for dinner guest. There sadly is no dress code, so be prepared to be dressed up for a nice meal and be seated next to men wearing jeans and Hawaiian shirts. But again remember, El Paso, not New York City. On the occasions I have been, I've always had a pleasant time. Good food, good drinks and good service. Not great, not horrible. If you want to have a fantastic dining experience (and I mean all around; food, atmosphere, service, etc) then travel. Go to Sushi Roku at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Roy's in San Francisco or J's in New York City. Either way, you'll have to leave El Paso. Mediocre is too common of a word found when dining out in El Paso. read more

We will always enjoy coming here and creating our holiday memories at cafe central. read more

First time is Last time! It's really too bad, I have been looking forward to try on this place for a long time. I actually made reservations two weeks in advance . The start was not good, first we were sat at a bar table, which was just noisier than we liked. Got seated about 5:45 , with a show to go to @ 7:30 next door thinking we're good to go . This had to be the slowest service I had ever experienced! For an up scale restaurant, the food was just ok. But the real kicker is that it took over an hour for our food to be served!! Our sever and the Manager told us on numerous times the food would be right out! Overview , just just ok, service that ranks up there with the slowest ever. Bottom line, avoid this one!! Too many other great places to go. read more

Café Central certainly looks the part: servers clad in classical waiting garb, tasteful (albeit outdated) décor, old favorites playing in the background, verbose yet diminutive menu set in leather covers... Patrons who know better, however, will not be fooled. (Incidentally, "better" is just a few steps away, at Anson Eleven's second story restaurant.) To those unversed in genuine fine-dining, make no mistake: Café Central is all appearance and no substance, the mass-market version of fine-dining that safely caters to people's conceptions of what fine-dining is, as opposed to the formative version of fine-dining that, vanguard-like, seeks to shape people's conceptions of what fine-dining can be. My husband and I have visited Café Central on two occasions, once to confirm its status as an El Paso institution, and a second time to, well, give them a second chance at making us understand why exactly they've come to hold institutional status here in town. With one rousing exception, every dish we ordered on both of our times there left us, at best, unimpressed, and, at worst, frustrated: lackluster sauces, unevenly cooked seafood (i.e., varying wildly from moist and succulent to criminally overcooked), pasta so far past al dente it had to be returned to the kitchen... The list of grievances goes on an on. To make matters worse, the tendency to fall short systemically extends from the kitchen to the bar: their Old Fashioned, that old standard by which every bar should be judged, was so lazily assembled its flavor profile was, as a consequence of this, utterly boring. (You know you're in trouble when a barman grabs a bottle you've seen advertised on TV, or plops a store-bought candied cherry, in all its Red #4 glory, into your drink!) That being said, one dish partially redeems Café Central: pastel de tres leches. Their elevated take on the Mexican classic (one of my favorite soaked cakes, right alongside French Canada's pouding chômeur, Britain's sticky toffee pudding, and France's baba au rhum) is, I assure you, something to behold: light and airy sponge cake, saturated to perfection in sweet, fragrant milk, and draped in velvety smooth frosting. If only the same amount of thought and quality of execution permeated the rest of their menu, Café Central would live up to its name. As mentioned earlier, if you're looking for the true center of fine-dining in El Paso, visit Anson Eleven's second story restaurant: it will challenge you, surprise you, inspire you, satisfy you, leave you wanting more. It will do for you what fine-dining (i.e., genuine fine-dining that uses food to edify) should do. read more

Let me just start by saying that I wanted to like this place. I had average expectations based on the reviews that were quickly met. Some things were outstanding and some were underwhelming at best. First the good. The bread selection is outstanding and the fact it is complimentary is great. The pianist and singer were great and added to the lovely atmosphere. The wait staff was attentive and kind. The overall atmosphere was way too "hotel-esque" for me but had some very lovely parts. Especially likes the ostrich print chairs in the bar area. The okay: Unfortunately this section is for the food. I got the 28 day aged NY strip steak and it was not very tender or flavorful. Good size, but really not that good. The scallops my wife got were pretty good though. The bad: terrible beer selection. Got it that this place caters to the wine crowd, but you gotta have at least some good bottled beer. Overall I will save my money and visit a place like Tabla (my current local fave) and get more flavor and food for the money. Oh well, it was worth a shot. read more
