On Friday evening, September 4th, after having dinner at Holbox, I went to Urth Caffé in Downtown…read moreLA with my mom and my two brothers to have some coffee and tea. I think we got there around 8:00 PM, but by that time, all the slices of cake I wanted to try had already been sold out. My mom ordered a decaf coffee, one of my brothers ordered a hot cocoa, and my other brother ordered a pot of chamomile tea. I shared the chamomile tea with one of my brothers. It was pretty cold outside that evening, so we decided to sit on the outdoor patio. Fortunately, we found a table right next to a heater, which made it warm, cozy. I've been to almost all of Urth Caffé's locations, including Melrose, Santa Monica, Pasadena, and Laguna Beach, and I have always found their food and drinks delicious. The service is also consistently good at every location I've visited. The only downside is that it's always difficult to find street parking around this location, so that evening we ended up paying $10 for parking.

It is heaven on urth. Let's begin this short albeit informative review…read more Urth Caffé (est 1989) is a bustling cafe that offers breadth of hot/cold coffee tea, juices, pastries, breakfast, lunch and dinner. This location is in Art District of DTLA. It's not my first time on Urth, I have been to their Santa Monica location except for the AD location. This location is a tad larger in space. I arrived early morning to grab a hot coffee. I had a Spanish Latte. And it was okay. Interior and exterior atmosphere were relaxing and welcoming. Their brick wall and fireplace were hard not to miss. Since I had a good experience at their other location, I do not mean to be glib but service does matter. It took a while before I received my hot latte. I was on the cusp of departing their bloody cafe. The female Asian staff should have debriefed me with a prescient warning that it's a busy early morning. Finding parking in and around the caffe is very scant. I was blessed I found a spot with ease. Prices were fair for some items while others were not. Overall, I had a decent experience but not the best as I would like to in my not so humble opinion. Would I recommend you visit. Yes.

That said, the owners were some of the kindest people I've met, and that genuinely made the experience so much better. Good customer service and warm, welcoming people really do make a difference. You can tell they care about their customers. Even though the boba wasn't exactly my preference, I still left with a positive impression because of how nice they were.

I had the passion fruit tea 25% sweet which was technically advertised as made with real passion fruit puree but it was just a premade syrup from Teazone. I received the drink and was disappointed that it tasted like water with some passion fruit resemblance. I had expected a stronger tea flavor since I did less sweet, but it tasted like sweetened water. I ended up discarding the drink. We also had gotten a classic black milk tea, which also tasted watered down, and finally we got the ube coconut smoothie, which for some reason was grey and white. We got that one at 75% sweet, but it was way too sweet and left a weird residue in my mouth. Very disappointed and would not come back again.

The decor is very spacious and clean though-this looks like a great place to study/get some work done or hang out with friends. I ordered the sunset tea lychee red guava with boba; the bobarista made it quickly, and it tasted delicious. It's awesome when something you order comes out just like it's supposed to according to pictures. The drink was sweet but not cloyingly so, and the boba was nice and chewy. I'm not a big milk tea person, but I'll come back to try another drink soon.

Relaxing tea house with hangout vibes (still finding its rhythm)…read moreStopped by Monstera Tea House and the first thing I noticed was how bright and airy the space feels. The interior leans minimalist -- lots of white, light wood tabletops, and green plant accents that match the "Monstera" name. It's a calm and comfortable space to sit for a while. They also have board games like chess, Uno, and Jenga, which makes it feel more like a casual hangout spot than just a quick grab-and-go tea shop. What I ordered: Peach Hibiscus tea with rainbow jelly 5 macarons (pistachio x2, vanilla, strawberry, and another flavor everything except caramel) Fried chicken tenders & fries combo They offer 10% off if you follow them on Instagram or Facebook, which brought my total to about $25. The Peach Hibiscus tea ended up being the highlight. It was refreshing and not overly sweet, and the rainbow jelly added a fun texture. I was a little disappointed they were out of boba, since that's usually my go-to topping. The macarons looked nice visually but the flavors didn't quite come through. The pistachio in particular tasted mostly sweet rather than having a distinct pistachio flavor. The shells were also a bit chewy with slightly uneven edges. The fried chicken tenders and fries ended up being the biggest issue. Two guests ahead of me had already been waiting around 30 minutes before I even placed my order. After ordering, it became clear the kitchen hadn't actually started the food yet. I could hear one staff member explaining to another how to make the tenders and mentioning that the process takes about 7 minutes total. Hearing that while watching orders sit unprepared made the delay a bit confusing. The couple ahead of me had ordered about 10 minutes before I did and still hadn't received their food either. The staff seemed to be enjoying themselves and chatting, which is great for morale, but the service side didn't feel very focused on getting orders out in a timely way. Eventually I decided to ask for a refund rather than continue waiting. I also noticed they sell $18 individual cakes that come in small square tins (similar to tiramisu containers). They might taste great, but visually they looked fairly simple, so the price point felt a bit high for what you see. Overall: The space itself is pleasant and the tea was refreshing. It's also nice that they provide games for people to hang out. Unfortunately, between the food delays, items being out of stock, and the feeling that the kitchen wasn't fully prepared yet, the experience ended up feeling like a lot of money spent without much payoff. Personally it's not a spot I'd return to, though the atmosphere may still appeal to people looking for a place to relax and play a game

Their Peach Oolong and Passionfruit black tea with their jellies. They don't do the typical coconut based small pieces of jelly, instead opting for house made with jelly. The price of these drinks is super reasonable, the tea quality great, and the jellies refreshing and delicious. 2. On the more premium side price wise, the taro milk tea here is nonetheless worth it. They use 100% real taro. No syrup. No powder. On top of that, even compared to other places which use real taro, this is the best iteration of the drink I've had. Subtly earthy and only slightly sweet, creamy, even with oat milk. An incredible drink. The vibe is relaxing and nice. Service is solid to great, depending on who is working. The owner is very kind!!! Seating is pleasant. Parking is the only issue since the city metered everything, but if you're grabbing a going, try the Total Wines or Target lot. You'll be fine.
