Decided on Cafe Brule because of the great reviews. I ordered the salmon which was touted on the menu as having an orange glaze and accompanied by steamed broccoli and brown rice with quinoa. I was also told by the waitress that it was very popular. My dinner arrived, and the salmon was boiled to the point of being almost unrecognizable. Needless to say, it was significantly over cooked, and there was absolutely no glaze anywhere to be found. The rice was covered in an excessively salty broth of what I'm guessing was supposed to be a Demi-glacé. It was inedible. The broccoli was not steamed. It was charred on the ends as if it had been cooked in the oven from frozen. I ordered the Stout Chocolate Cake for dessert. It was okay. It had a very light crumb, but very little chocolate flavor. The icing was very nice. Service was meh. Lots of staff, they weren't busy, and seemed as if only one or 2 waitresses were actually waiting tables. read more

I give 3 stars based on the attentiveness of servers and the delicious roasted red pepper Gouda bisque. The main serving, listed as mufalata was extremely disappointing. The sandwich was dry, missing 4 essential ingredients, Sicilian style sesame bread, oil, vinegar, and olive salad. I ordered a lemon curd dessert. That turned out to be a basic lemon bar. read more

Although it looks mostly like a coffee shop and bakery, we came for the fried cheese curds that needed a stronger-seasoned coating and more color. A rogue "potatoes brule" slipped into my batch of cheese curds. Like a flattened fried gnocchi, the homey yet clever potatoes were the star of the day. The best part of the pot roast dip was the chewy baguette made on-site. The meat was fine but the sandwich was hard to eat because the bread was narrow and, unlike a French dip where the slices of roast beef cling together, the pot roast crumbled into chunks. With ingredients that played well together, the chicken breast and green apple panini had evenly grilled bread and carefully distributed melted cheddar cheese (not just lazily placed in the middle). The menu said "artisan bread" which was rather ordinary sliced white and not crusty like the baguette. On a technical note, the sliced bread meant this was not a panini but a grilled cheese sandwich. read more

Our party of four were looking for a family restaurant but didn't want a 'Perkins' kind of experience. We got lucky and found Cafe Brûlée! It was an inviting and positive experience from the beginning to end. The menu selection is new American, with a wide variety of coffee drinks, non alcoholic and alcohol drinks to choose from. Since it was a late lunch for us we opted for sandwiches. We ordered the patty melt, country chicken wrap and Greek chicken wrap. All the sandwiches were delicious. One person in our party had the coffee and she wasn't too impressed. I don't think the coffee was terrible but it wasn't the best either. Otherwise our experience was nice. If you are coming near here and you love breakfast, this is your stop. We stumbled upon this joint, and FREQUENTLY return for the best breakfast around! We have almost tried their entire breakfast menu, and most everything has been great. They have really good funky food and classics. They do have some flaws... I wouldn't recommend coming if you are a waffle lover, they are okay. I'm not a huge fan of their lunch menu. But staff is friendly, we don't come often enough for people to remember us, but we've had the same waiter on multiple occasions and they are always wonderful. We haven't tried their cakes, yet, but our next order will be from here to see how it is. Coffee is also very good! read more

1st time here to Cafe Brule and we went for breakfast. We were greeted and sat immediately. The waiter was courteous and professional, but he was busy with alot of tables. Which meant my coffee went empty. (Minus 1 star) The food was good. A breakfast sandwich and a 2 egg meat combo plate. The regular coffee was good as well. I like the place. It looks like it has a lot of different pastries to order and i have to try their beignets. We came for brunch about 11:30 AM on a Sunday. We were seated quickly despite it being very busy. We both really enjoyed our meals. I don't think either of us finished our meals the portions were very large. The waffle I ordered on the side was so wonderful I would have been happy with just that as my meal. Café Brûle is a great place to stop in anytime! Breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert and coffee! It's one of my favorites anytime I'm in Vermillion SD. It's a typical cafe style atmosphere, average noise level and the staff is always friendly. You'll notice the place is full of college students and an occasional local or two. Their desserts are fantastic and you can't go wrong with one of there many coffee drinks. Worth a try! read more

This place used to be good. My husband and I usually visit when we are in the area once or twice a year. We haven't been for a couple of years because of the pandemic but did stop in during our last trip and were disappointed. The place was packed and really loud! The drapes that buffered much of the noise had been removed. It really needs an update as the chenille on the chairs is worn thin. The tables were uneven. It used to have ambiance but not any more. The food was just ok, and the menu was way too busy. I used to come just for the coffee, but that wasn't even good this time. I could not wait to leave. The place closes at 3 pm now. Great Sunday lunch! Hubs had the hot beef accompanied by the best garlic mashed potatoes and what they called green bean casserole, which was really cheese covered beans (but very tasty). I had the chicken gyro which was served open faced with the yummy cucumber dill sauce on the side. The vegis, including the avocado, were very fresh and bright. The accompanying roasted red pepper gouda soup was especially tasty. They have a marvelous selection of specialty coffee drinks and desserts. Prepare to be tempted by what's in the glass cases! Wonderful service (our server was Joanne), very helpful and attentive even though they were crowded and busy. The noise level is a bit loud because of the small size, but it was not overbearing. Visited our niece who is a student at USD for lunch. They were very busy, but we got a table pretty quickly and our waiter was there right away. We looked over the extensive menu and placed our orders. The half portion of mac and cheese for our niece, the waiters recommendation of a chicken apple panini for my wife, and the Salmon Lettuce and Tomato (SLT) for me. The mac and cheese was a bit hit with a variety of cheeses. My wife enjoyed her sandwich, but it didn't really have the 'panini-look', though it was tasty. My SLT was a smaller piece of salmon with fresh tomato and lettuce, served with a side of tartar sauce. The salmon was nicely prepared, if not a bit bland, but the sourdough bread was delicious and the sandwich was OK overall.
