The food was very average and not good quality. I got a gyro and the meat was similar to that of hotel microwaved bacon. I also tried a chipotle chicken sandwich of sorts, and there was 90% bread, 10% chicken and toppings. It was ALL bread! For $10 a sandwich and $17 for a large sandwich I expect my sandwich to be filled up and be able to keep me full. Not worth the money at all for lunch! read more

I'll preface my five star review by saying - prepare to wait. Beyond that, Mr. Smith's is awesome. Their sandwiches put every chain store to shame. It's in the Ace Hardware, carried over from when the location was a grocery store. Wrap your hands (and head) around a Big Smith, Chicken & Cheese, or Reuben. Get a hot sandwich, don't even bother with cold unless you're getting a wrap. All bread, once named the Best Bread In America by Oprah Magazine, is baked fresh in-store as the restaurant also operates as a bakery. Meat and cheese is sliced fresh too. Soup or salad is good with a half sandwich, but a full sandwich will hit the spot for those with a hangover or big appetite. Breakfast items include omelettes, egg sandwiches/wraps, and skillets. Although it's a rather traditional breakfast menu, prices are cheap and skillet portions are generous. Chicken and pizza are also served if you have a picky eater or child with you. To order, you circle options on a bag and hand it to the cashier. Your sandwich is made fresh while you wait, then they call your name. If you have questions, just ask a college student nearby. The Coke fountain has a bunch of different flavor choices, which is unique to the faire in Vermillion. Lastly, the founder, Mr. Smith, is a really inspirational guy. He has MS, but has biked across the state of South Dakota to raise money and awareness to fight the disease. read more

We ordered 2 large sub rolls. There are no prices anywhere on the menu. I selected 3 meats and my husband selected 2. The menu said it would be "just a little more money" for more than 1 meat. The person rang up the subs. They are 12.99 each for a footlong and then 1.99 more for each meat. Our total for 2 footlong subs was $32. We took the subs to go to eat later in the day. We don't live in Vermillon and had already drove home before opening the bags. They got our bread orders backwards. They only put ham on them when both were supposed to have bacon and mine was supposed to have Turkey as well. There was no lettuce on either one. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because they do shave the meat fresh for each sub and it is very good meat. read more

Absolutely killer 'wiches! This is THE spot to go! I am visiting Vermillion, SD, for Frogmans print workshop and this hidden gem in an Ace Hardware is the bomb-diggity for sandwiches of all sorts. As an added bonus it doubles as a Godfather's Pizza. First try I had their "small" Rueben. It was excellent. I am going to hit this place at least one more time before I head home in a few days. There are quite a great selection of sandwiches and if you want to build one you can do so. If you are a fan of the new Coke soda fountains this has the push button system that lets to mix flavors to your liking. Hands down it is worth the stop. read more

Reasonable sandwich shop. Make sure that you order from the bag and not just the cashier (I was confused and just went straight to order my sandwich). These sandwiches were huge. A large is easily enough to feed two people and I say that as a person who can eat a lot of food. I ate a spicy pastrami (Pastrami, pepper jack, bacon and horseradish). Overall, the sandwich was good, but the bread was a bit too thick and the ingredients were minimized by it. I watched the sandwich artist make a really tasty looking chicken sandwich, which I will try next time (if I'm ever up there again). I would have liked to have tried some of the other offerings as well. All in all, this place had a lot of variety and it's worth a visit. As part of early Move-in 2014, we had to eat at Mr. Smith's before the rush of returning students next week. Sadly, getting your order is an awful test of patience. It was painfully obvious that the staff are annoyed by customers who ask any questions. Worse though was returning to request the cold sandwich wrap I ordered, in exchange for the grilled burrito I received. The mean and extremely rude little troll of a "manager" Went out of his way to deny it was an error and even told me that since the burrito was now cold, I could just eat the heated lettuce and mayo gooped up in the hard grilled tortilla. After he insisted that it was impossible to buy any sandwich with cold chicken on a 90 degree day--- including YELLING across the room to me that my new order "better not be chicken!" I turned to read the Special of the Month: Chicken Club, hot or cold. So then the little jerk gave a snooty excuse about that being "different chicken." Seriously. Sandwich bread was great but too salty on baguette, and meats, etc... are low-end grocery packaged "deli" foods. It would be a good deal if they didn't hate their customers. read more
