Excellent! Highly recommend and imagination is the limit! Anything you could ever want. Could advertise a little better. Ran around the block three times before I came in for directions and accidentally found it in the Ace store. Big bonus, great hardware store as well!!! read more

The shop is a little confusing, but is actually in the hardware store itself. The sandwiches were so good and a good size too. There were plenty of options for anyone, regardless of what they are in the mood for. Don't sleep on this unusual place for a sandwich shop! read more

Over priced lunch sandwiches!!!! They had very little meat and the Gyro was the most pathetic I've ever had. Crispy paper thin gyro meat! Will never go back read more

Mister Smith's Bakery - $9 sandwich with hardly any chicken - Bakeries Near Me - Vermillion, South Dakota

The food was very average and not good quality. I got a gyro and the meat was similar to that of hotel microwaved bacon. I also tried a chipotle chicken sandwich of sorts, and there was 90% bread, 10% chicken and toppings. It was ALL bread! For $10 a sandwich and $17 for a large sandwich I expect my sandwich to be filled up and be able to keep me full. Not worth the money at all for lunch! read more

Great sandwiches, delicious soups and chili- all in an unexpected spot. Head on in to the hardware store (yes, the hardware store) and get a fantastic sandwich on fresh baked bread. YUM! read more

Read a review that they had the best breakfast sandwich in SD. They weren't wrong. Wow! Incredible food. Great service and wanted to back the same day for lunch. 5 stars! read more

Very nice little cafe inside of Ace Hardware. Speedy service and delicious and large food options. Highly recommend if you are in vermillion. read more

I love the variety you can get at Smith's. From sandwiches to soups to chicken dinners to salads to pizza, they have it all. The food is so good and the quality of the ingredients they use elevates the experience. I've eaten here many many times and it's my first choice out of any sandwich shop. It's not always the fastest, but with how many customers they have and how small they are, I think it's well worth the wait. I also want to give a shout out to their breakfast menu too. Best breakfast in Vermillion, hands down! read more

Mister Smith's Bakery - an omelet, sausages, and eggs - Bakeries Near Me - Vermillion, South Dakota

This is one of our favorite sammich shops! It may seem pricey until you see the size of the things, then you'll be satisfied. I've never made it early enough for the breakfast sandwiches, but have heard good things! You get options of all kinds of fresh bread and they even have sweets (brownies, cookies, sweet breads, and cakes) to tempt you when you wait for your food...what's not to love? read more

Great place! Love their breakfast. Eat here every time I'm in Vermillion. People behind the grill are awesome.

Great little sandwich shop. Love the fact it's in an Ace Hardware. I bought myself a bucket of paint while I waited for my sandwich. Wait was a little long, but it was worth it. Ingredients were very fresh and the sandwich was well made. Overall the service could be better and the food could be made faster, but the quality was great and the location made it fun. read more

Best sandwiches anywhere. The Pastrami Club is my absolute favorite sandwich ever. If you want a great sandwich, forget Subway and Jimmy John's. Head to Mr. Smith's for the best sandwich found anywhere. read more

I've ate at Mr smith's multiple times and it has always been heavens on my tastebuds. Mr smith himself welcomed our order and was very kind. They had sooo many drinks to pick from in their soda fountain. Highly recommend to All! read more

I'll preface my five star review by saying - prepare to wait. Beyond that, Mr. Smith's is awesome. Their sandwiches put every chain store to shame. It's in the Ace Hardware, carried over from when the location was a grocery store. Wrap your hands (and head) around a Big Smith, Chicken & Cheese, or Reuben. Get a hot sandwich, don't even bother with cold unless you're getting a wrap. All bread, once named the Best Bread In America by Oprah Magazine, is baked fresh in-store as the restaurant also operates as a bakery. Meat and cheese is sliced fresh too. Soup or salad is good with a half sandwich, but a full sandwich will hit the spot for those with a hangover or big appetite. Breakfast items include omelettes, egg sandwiches/wraps, and skillets. Although it's a rather traditional breakfast menu, prices are cheap and skillet portions are generous. Chicken and pizza are also served if you have a picky eater or child with you. To order, you circle options on a bag and hand it to the cashier. Your sandwich is made fresh while you wait, then they call your name. If you have questions, just ask a college student nearby. The Coke fountain has a bunch of different flavor choices, which is unique to the faire in Vermillion. Lastly, the founder, Mr. Smith, is a really inspirational guy. He has MS, but has biked across the state of South Dakota to raise money and awareness to fight the disease. read more

Reasonable sandwich shop. Make sure that you order from the bag and not just the cashier (I was confused and just went straight to order my sandwich). These sandwiches were huge. A large is easily enough to feed two people and I say that as a person who can eat a lot of food. I ate a spicy pastrami (Pastrami, pepper jack, bacon and horseradish). Overall, the sandwich was good, but the bread was a bit too thick and the ingredients were minimized by it. I watched the sandwich artist make a really tasty looking chicken sandwich, which I will try next time (if I'm ever up there again). I would have liked to have tried some of the other offerings as well. All in all, this place had a lot of variety and it's worth a visit. Pretty good value (probably about a $8 sandwich that could feed two people). read more

Their sandwiches are great of course, but their breakfast is a local secret. You walk in and write your order on your sandwich bag, order at the counter, and wait for your sandwich. Super casual. Their southwest chicken wrap is my favorite. read more

Mister Smith's is a great breakfast and sandwich shop located inside Ace Hardware! Yes, inside Ace Hardware. There are not a lot of signs outside, so just know it's inside Ace Hardware. The prices are good, and food is even better! It's not fancy, just a nice clean place that serves great breakfasts and sandwiches for lunch! And while you are at it, you can pick up some hardware supplies at the same time! read more

We ordered 2 large sub rolls. There are no prices anywhere on the menu. I selected 3 meats and my husband selected 2. The menu said it would be "just a little more money" for more than 1 meat. The person rang up the subs. They are 12.99 each for a footlong and then 1.99 more for each meat. Our total for 2 footlong subs was $32. We took the subs to go to eat later in the day. We don't live in Vermillon and had already drove home before opening the bags. They got our bread orders backwards. They only put ham on them when both were supposed to have bacon and mine was supposed to have Turkey as well. There was no lettuce on either one. The only reason I am giving 2 stars is because they do shave the meat fresh for each sub and it is very good meat. read more

Mister Smith's is a great local joint. It may seem unconventional to serve food in the corner of an Ace Hardware store but you'll get quality food at a fair price. The namesake, Mr. Larry Smith, was a great person and his legacy can still be enjoyed at Mister Smith's. Larry's breads are famous! read more

Absolutely killer 'wiches! This is THE spot to go! I am visiting Vermillion, SD, for Frogmans print workshop and this hidden gem in an Ace Hardware is the bomb-diggity for sandwiches of all sorts. As an added bonus it doubles as a Godfather's Pizza. First try I had their "small" Rueben. It was excellent. I am going to hit this place at least one more time before I head home in a few days. There are quite a great selection of sandwiches and if you want to build one you can do so. If you are a fan of the new Coke soda fountains this has the push button system that lets to mix flavors to your liking. Hands down it is worth the stop. read more

Best sandwiches in Vermillion. Cold or hot. The method of ordering sammys on your own personal paper bag is a lot of fun. Big Smith or a customized Sammy are the highlights. read more

Mr. Smith's serves excellent sandwiches. Having grown up with an impressive array of restaurants in LA, this sandwich shop can give many of them a run for their money! Their ingredients are fresh, and they offer you so many choices! Their sandwiches are made-to-order on homemade bread, so you really can't go wrong. My personal favorite is the Rachel, which is like a Reuben except with turkey breast rather than corned beef. I took my family here when they visited, and they loved it too! If you spend any time in Vermillion, this establishment is a must-try. read more

This is by far the best sandwich place in Vermillion. Be prepared to wait during peak lunch hours, but well worth it. Everything is so fresh and the breads most likely baked that morning. I highly recommend it to vegetarians too. Great options. My favorite is the portabella melt. read more

This place is one of the best restaurants in Vermillion! I would always go here during my lunch break. The biggest downside is that it feels weird that it is in a Ace Hardware. If you can get passed that you will have an amazing sandwich. read more

My first impression of Mister Smiths. "Whoa a sandwich shop in a hardware store, not sure how I feel about this?! Well if IKEA can have a restaurant in their store why can't an Ace hardware?" Joking aside Mister Smiths is no joke! Their sandwiches make my taste buds sing! The ingredients they put in their sandwiches are cut right in front of you!! Can't get fresher than that folks! In addition to their stellar sandwich making abilities they have amazing sides to go with it! Can you say corn nuggets? Who knew corn could be put into fired, nugget form!? Finding this gem in Vermillion, South Dakota will make you feel like a local in no time! Yours Truly, Karlie Kudrna read more

One of my favorites in town! Price is ridiculously cheap, especially for what you get. Smith-melt=amazing. Always fresh.....For those outside the area it might seem a little odd to eat at a grocery/hardware store, but hell take the chance. read more

Pretentious at best, I could have made a better sandwich at home. What a major disappointment, compared to its reputation.

Really good sandwiches and salads. This place is too good to be listed as a sandwich counter; it's really a restaurant. That way more people will see its reviews. My wife had a chicken-ginger salad; I had the Mr. Smith sandwich. Both were quite tasty. read more

First off - this shop is IN Ace Hardware. Some of the best sandwiches my wife and I have ever tasted. The focaccia was outstanding and the salted baguette was perfect. One of the best place in the area, without a doubt! If you're new, try not to be offended when the staff refuse to take your order if you don't write it in a bag...that's how they roll. Maybe a little courtesy training is order, but once you get the hang of it, you won't be disappointed! The sandwiches are bistro quality at fast food prices! Truly amazing! read more

Um...really wanted to like this place but the folks who work there leave a whole lot to be desired. No one smiled, 2 new customers came up as I was waiting for my sandwich, no one greeted them or said, hi, be with you in a minute. An employee coughed onto a sandwich he was making and all I could think was thanks heavens that wasn't mine! I really wanted to try their breakfast but I was put off by sullen employees and the filthy floors and front of cabinets etc. Argh! read more

Excellent fast sandwiches. Fresh ingredients weird location in the ACE, but great for work lunch break if your picking up tools.

We were a bit nervous about visiting a sandwich shop in an ace hardware. Never seen that before. However, we were pleasantly surprised. Breakfast sandwiches were amazing. Well worth a stop if you find yourself in Vermillion. read more

I still love this place but it always seems like there are 30 flies in their seating area to pester you while you're trying to enjoy your delicious Mr. Smith's sandwich. It seems like this should be an easy problem to solve but doesn't get done. read more

This is a great place for fresh sandwiches and salads. If you are a vegetarian you don't have to worry because there are 3 sandwiches specifically for vegetarians and sumptuous salads with so many veggie options. What is specially great that these are fresh veggies and you can create your own salad and sandwiches! The bread is freshly baked at the bakery and it is excellent. The regular sandwich is more than sufficient for the hungry person. It is the best place to eat in Vermillion and you can even pick up a loaf of bread or baguette to talk with you. read more

If you are ever in or passing through Vermillion and only have one place to eat this is it. Mr. Smith's has the best sandwiches you will ever eat. Everything about them is great. You can eat every single sandwich on the menu and never eat anything bad. If you wanna eat healthy don't go here. If you want to have one of the biggest and best sandwiches you've ever had give it a shot. The 3D melt is literally the biggest sandwich I have ever seen in person. Southwest wrap is amazing. Again everything on the menu is worth having. read more

Located inside Ace Hardware (there are no signs) this place is off the hook! Everything is so delicious. The sandwiches & wraps amazing!!! Breakfast is awesome. Customer Service; wonderful! I don't recommend the smoothies or coffee. We stayed in Vermillion for 4 days and it's the only place we ate out at. Seriously the best sandwiches ever!!! Bread is so fresh, the condiments list is never ending and perfection is all you taste. read more

I was really happy with my swd until last visit. The place was Cain of dirty it was to many flys on the prep table landing on the deli meat, the guy took forever to finish my order(15 minutes) with no gloves and when i say "hey it took to long i just have a 30 minutes lunch break" he rudely say YA HAVE A NICE DAY..... So two minus star for service... Have a nice day. read more

As part of early Move-in 2014, we had to eat at Mr. Smith's before the rush of returning students next week. Sadly, getting your order is an awful test of patience. It was painfully obvious that the staff are annoyed by customers who ask any questions. Worse though was returning to request the cold sandwich wrap I ordered, in exchange for the grilled burrito I received. The mean and extremely rude little troll of a "manager" Went out of his way to deny it was an error and even told me that since the burrito was now cold, I could just eat the heated lettuce and mayo gooped up in the hard grilled tortilla. After he insisted that it was impossible to buy any sandwich with cold chicken on a 90 degree day--- including YELLING across the room to me that my new order "better not be chicken!" I turned to read the Special of the Month: Chicken Club, hot or cold. So then the little jerk gave a snooty excuse about that being "different chicken." Seriously. Sandwich bread was great but too salty on baguette, and meats, etc... are low-end grocery packaged "deli" foods. It would be a good deal if they didn't hate their customers. read more
