I went to Cafe Berlin again, assuming my first bad experience was just chance. This past weekend, I attended an event for local rappers and hip hop artists. Using Cafe Berlin as a venue was perfect for the size of crowd that turned up, intimate but not crammed. There was one bartender for the evening; he did a decent job for being alone. I got several ciders throughout the show and had a good time. A few days later, I check my credit card statement to see the bartender added an extra $8 to my tab even though I tipped in cash after running my card. After speaking with the front-of-house manager, I was refunded but the damage was done. I have been burned twice in a row by Cafe Berlin and I will never spend another dime here. read more

Highly disappointed with the food after hearing such wonderful things. My French toast was NOT French toast, but merely fried bread. A proper French toast has bread that has been soaked in a spiced milk and egg mixture, and then fried/griddled in order to create a crisp exterior and a custards interior. My French toast was literally dry and crispy all the way through, and had absolutely no seasoning. It was sugar-dusted griddles bread. The bacon we received was cooked well, but completely cold when it reached the table. My father's waffles were thick and exceptionally dry. No distinct spicing or flavoring as one would expect from a so-called Belgian waffle. As a new resident to Columbia,'it's incredibly disappointing to have such bad food at one of the town's meccas for "good food". I will definitely never come back to Cafe Berlin. read more

Whenever I am away from home and someone asks me what I miss the most about Columbia, it's Cafe Berlin. The food is so delicious, I can't even do the justice of writing about it - you just need to go and experience it for yourself. And if the wait time is 45 mins+, that's normal because people are flying in from all over the world to pay homage to the gods of brunch. The bar has been set by this establishment, and nobody will ever come close. Nearly everyone I know raves about Cafe Berlin. The first time my wife tried to go she was walking our dog with a friend. They wouldn't make any exceptions to serving outside on a 75 degree day, wouldn't let them sit outside while they waited for the food and bring the plates out and back themselves, and wouldn't do takeout - all with a less than half full restaurant. I understand this happening during a rush, but if it's not - do some problem solving and deliver good customer service. Despite that, I visited with my wife, brother, and sister in law. The service was fine enough. She was busy and working hard. We were next to the pour your own coffee and water and did it ourselves a couple times. No problem. The food tasted tasted fine but was nothing special. It was on the expensive side for Columbia - especially considering the small portion size. I loved this place. We had an unbelievable time! The stage was huge, and the sound was professional and tight! The staff took great care of us, and we're super friendly. The crowd was very attentive, responsive and fun to play for. The other bands were instantly our new besties, and we'd love to come back anytime!!! It's a restaurant in the day and a rock club at night, so it's kind of a weird setup, but it all works out just fine. I'm surprised more daytime restaurants don't do this. Can't say enough about Cafe Berlin. It was warm, inviting and a hipster's dream. The right blend of organic or farm-raised menu items, tattoos, elbow-patched sweaters, braided beards, and a sarcastic wait staff. Loved it! The food was great- I had the "starving artist" which was biscuit and gravy with poached eggs and sauteed veggies and greens. Plus a FREE happy birthday biscuit with jam and a coffee bar. We ordered the apples and sausage on a pancake, which was a perfect sweet/savory mix of onions, garlic, brown sugar, butter and spicy andouille; and also the pulled pork hash, in which tender slow-cooked meat was paired with blistered veggies and hot peppers, as well as a poached egg and some hollandaise sauce for added richness. They are, however, using all organic and local products which is more expensive just because of economies of scale. The wait was long to order (order at the counter like a fast-casual place) and then the wait to get food was even longer.
