I'll be honest--I had never even heard of Columbia, Missouri until a few weeks ago. So to say I had expectations would be a flat-out lie. I couldn't have told you a single thing about this part of the country. But after one lunch at Beet Box, I'll be talking about Columbia for a long time. The Lamb & Eggs is an absolute masterpiece. On paper, it doesn't even sound like it should work. Then it shows up looking like a beautiful mess--a mishmash of flavors, textures, herbs, vegetables, creamy elements, perfectly fried eggs, and incredibly seasoned lamb. It feels like chaos... until you take the first bite. Then it all makes perfect sense. Every ingredient has a purpose, and somehow it all comes together in one of the most memorable dishes I've had in a very long time. As incredible as that bowl was, the Za'atar Fries with Harissa Mayo somehow stole the show. Crispy. Battered. Perfectly seasoned. Every single fry had that satisfying crunch on the outside while staying fluffy inside, and the harissa mayo was the perfect finishing touch. These aren't fries you order because you're looking to round out the meal. They're fries you'll be thinking about long after you leave. I came into Columbia knowing absolutely nothing about it. Decided to come here on a whim when the other place we were headed was too busy, and boy am I glad. This place is incredible!! I got the brunch special which is pork tocino, crispy garlic rice, cucumbers, and two fried eggs. This cured my hangover and then some. This was way better than I expected. I'll be thinking about this for days. I also ordered the babka French toast to split with my husband and it was so good. Personally, I don't think it needed syrup. It was amazing. My husband got the biscuit with lamb gravy and it was all spiced so well. The gravy was sort of like a lamb curry of sorts. I also got an iced latte and it was good too. I had the Bodega Bacon, and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. The sandwich is amazing and always tastes super fresh. Every element is spot-on, crispy bacon, perfectly cooked egg, and a soft yet sturdy bun that holds everything together. I'll be honest, I'm a cheddar girl, so the default cheese isn't my favorite, but that's just personal preference. Last time I visited, I ordered it without cheese and added my own sharp cheddar at home. Game changer! I also like to add a little honey to balance out all the savory, salty flavors from the bacon, egg, and cheese. It adds just the right touch of sweetness and really rounds out the sandwich. That said, even without my tweaks, the sandwich is a solid 8.5/10 right out of the restaurant. With my cheddar and honey hack? It's a 10/10. We had a delicious breakfast at Beet Box. The Bodega BEC was perfection. Perfect bun, just enough bacon, tender and tasty egg. The black garlic biscuit sandwich hit all the right notes, with flaky pastry and tasty filling. But the highlight for me was the breakfast burrito (we ordered with sausage but I would get with shawarma next time). First of all. I ordered way too much on accident. Second of all. Driving in, I definitely thought Google was trying to get me killed. I do not live in Columbia and was looking for a spot, not too far from the highway but also delicious. Once I found where I needed to be, asked a ton of questions about the menu. 2 recommendations, larger water glasses and a better menu board. The menu board was trendy and simple and made me feel like I needed more information, like Mindy, don't order 2 full size entrees. They have a great patio, I pick my seat and wait for my food. It seemed like it took forever, but my data was not working on my phone, there are only so many times you can twiddle your thumbs. When my food arrived I realized the mistake that I had made. Waaaaaaaaay to much food. Sometimes, your order 2 things because you want different flavors right? In this case my "gluten free" chicken dish had so much flavor I had 0 need for the salad. I put that in quotes, because it's not just gluten free, it's also low carb and probably the best GIANT salad I've had in a long time. I didn't take a good photo of the chicken, it had 3 different chutneys (I think) included in the bowl. I loved each one. The pickled tomatoes were a fantastic flavor punch and I really could have eaten just this and been so full. But, I was enticed by all of the delightful things on the squash salad. So I had to at least take a few bites while it was fresh. It was an amazing flavor combination and this also, would have been a full meal. I love this place, I feel like it's one of Columbia's hidden gems because it's hard to stumble across. Once you get inside it's pretty small & you order at the counter. The food tastes (and looks) like it took hours to make!!! While I was looking around at everyone's plates today, every dish looked like a work of art. Very unique ingredients & combinations that you will not be able to find anywhere else. Another thing I love about Beat Box is their menu is slightly different everyday. They have a few staples, but even those get modified depending on what's in season or they can get their hands on. For example, I've gotten the hummus bowl twice now & both times it came with slightly different toppings. I love this because you can never get sick of the menu & it makes you want to come back anytime they have a fun, new special. Todays special was fish tacos which they sold out of those by about 12:30/1, so I didn't get to try them, but I was perfectly happy getting another hummus bowl. It was topped with brussels sprouts today & was sooo good. Definitely some of the best hummus I've ever had. Although it's a bit expensive, I think it's 100% worth the price. The quality of the food is amazing and the portions are huge. The hummus bowl I got today lasted me 2 meals because of how big it was. And I know I'll never find a hummus bowl this beautiful or topped with the same things anywhere, so I didn't mind the price. I also got a side of falafel that came out kinda burnt at first. The staff was super friendly about it & happily remade me 2 more that came out a lot better the 2nd time. I could tell they really cared & wanted me to leave happy. Regardless, their falafel is very crispy either way, but still delicious. It was really good dipped in my hummus bowl. In previous trips I've also tried the falafel wrap & za'tar fries. The falafel wrap is good, but I like the hummus bowl better. The fries are a must have, they are SO GOOD. They have different pastries everyday too. Everything sounded so good, so it was hard to decide what to order. The service was amazing, and everyone was super friendly. - Breakfast burrito with schwarma (4.5/5): wow this was so yummy! The flavors were so unique, and there was a lot going on but omg so good. The schwarma was super tender and cooked well. There were lots of sauces and veggies too, which I loved. - Lamb and eggs (4/5): this came in a huge bowl with lots going on. All of the different flavors meshed well in an unexpected way. The pickled vegetables, lamb, lettuce, sauces all complemented each other well. Super flavorful and tasty. - Zatar fries (4/5): these tasted very unique and flavorful. Love the tempura batter, it was semi light and not too greasy. The sauce it came with almost tasted like egg yolks but it was really yummy. Next time we need to get the hummus bowl! The long-haired, colorfully garbed greeter provided a 7.6 second summary. I ordered, you guessed it, the "Special". It was phenomenal and it was $16. There may be some transcendent meaning to the number "16" here. My cutlery had a "Compost" tag. Came from compost, going to compost, who knows? It looked clean and did not taste funny. Wow. Not only were the folks working kind and welcoming to us visitors to town, the food was exceptional. As a family on a road trip, we asked to order breakfast and also some lunch items to go for the road. They accommodated and gave us some serious road eats. The black garlic biscuit was perfect in texture and so unique in flavor. The egg, sauce, sausage, and hints of honey were perfectly added. It took 5 bites to get my head around the deliciousness hitting me from all angles and sides. The biscuit alone would have been memorable, but the flavor combination? Mind blown. Beet Box was slightly difficult to find. There is very limited seating inside, which could be a drawback to some. They get so busy that it can be difficult to hear when your name is called or they don't call your name at all. For a first time experience, we enjoyed the food! I would highly recommend the fries - crunchy and soft, fresh at the same time. The harissa mayo was our favorite with the fries. The fries are very salty and have lots of garlic, but the sauce adds a subtle spice and creaminess to balance it out. Pictured also is the Lamb Koobideh Wrap. Overall, it was decent. Unfortunately, the greens were not as fresh. The lamb was dry and did not have much flavor. VERY saucy, maybe a little too much mayo for some (like myself). The flatbread is SO GOOD. I wasn't aware of how much I liked pickled beets until I had it in this wrap! Despite a mediocre first time experience, we do plan to return and continue exploring what the "best" options are on the menu. Hopefully it will be a better experience in the future! To say the roll was overflowing would be an understatement. My wife got her usual falafel wrap. The fries are unbelievable coated with a batter then fried crispy. We stopped into Beet Box in Columbia on our drive from STL to KC and we loved it! The food was fresh, service was nice and fast, there was inside and outdoor seating. They don't have a big sign outside of their restaurant so it can be tricky to find unless you've been on their website and recognize their "swirl" logo. They also don't have a very detailed menu - no prices or descriptions - so I'd recommend looking at the online order menu on their website for that info! The hummus bowl was HUGE, tons of fresh creamy hummus and lots of veggies (both fresh, sautéed, and pickled), sauces, and fun flavors. I also got the chicken shawarma added on top of my bowl and that was super good! Great flavor and not your typical gyro/shawarma meat, felt very high quality. We also got a side of the za'tar sauce which was yummy! It added a nice flavor to our dishes - not too spicy. The chicken shawarma and falafel wraps were great! They were also huge! Had an amazing lunch @eatabeetbox We started with eating our chocolate chip cookie because we couldn't wait. The ratio of chocolate to dough is maybe 75/25. Which now is the ratio I want for all cookies, just enough dough to hold my chocolate together. Then we got lunch. The fries are battered then fried . Portion is huge so share, but ask for 2 sides of the garlic dipping sauce. It goes really well with the za'atar. The wrap on the falafel (& all sandwiches) is soft like a pita, but not too doughy. Wow! Took my wife and daughter here for a late breakfast as we were passing through town. Everything looks to be made fresh onsite, including the pickled cucumbers, tomatoes and beets used in the dishes. Baked goods looked really good, and the pop tarts must be wonderful as they were out and still had people calling or trying to order them. Breakfast burrito has a choice of meat and has a lot of other things in it. My teen daughter didn't think to ask and was thrown off by some of the veges that were included. Wife got the lamb and eggs and loved it! A ton of food. Coffee was good, the French press is STRONG! Cute decor and plants everywhere.
