I stopped for dinner, and it was great! I ordered the luxemburger and some cheese curds. The cheese curds had amazing cheese pulls. I thought my burger was good, but it was a little saltier than I prefer. My server was great! However, I did wish she checked up on me more. On a recent visit to Madison, Café Hollander was recommended and while we were hesitant due to its location in an outlet mall, we made our way there and are glad we did! Café Hollander is a grandiose spot with clear nods to European cafes and pubs. Lots a heavy woods, industrial style fixtures, big spaces, high ceilings and ornate details throughout. Definitely takes you out of the mall and sends you overseas. We grabbed a high top in the bar area and were greeted by our server within minutes. It' was brunch time, so we scoped out the Bloody Mary menu and both landed on the Bloody Fresca, which is a Bloody Mary with a few spicy additions including cholula and a jalapeño stuffed olive! It was delish and apparently having a small beer chaser is a thing...maybe a midwestern thing? Either way, it worked and I appreciated it. For food we started with the crispy Brussels and they were phenomenal. Pepitas, crema and parm on Brussels? Don't think I can have them any other way now! I went with the meatloaf sided with asparagus. The meatloaf was juicy and packed with seasoning and veggies. Absolutely loved the crisp they put on the edges of the meatloaf. A nice touch! The asparagus was standard, a tad al dente for my liking, but it was okay. My pal went Mediterranean with the falafel bowl. He ate every bit of it, so success. Great brewpub with a nice menu and excellent beer list (particularly Belgian beers). They also serve brunch all day, which is a nice feature. The building itself is very modern and has a classic brewpub feel to it. We got super friendly service from our server, and the beers were served properly in the appropriate glassware. The breakfast Sammy was nice. I love a good pretzel bun and this one was overflowing with cheese and ham. And the fries were really good as well. It's one of our favorites for food! My husband raves about their beer menu as well. We have been to several café Hollander locations and the Hilldale location is our favorite. Really nice atmosphere with tons of seating. In the summer months, they open up the garage doors to bring the outside in. And in the winter month, they have igloos that you can eat outside with heaters. This requires an advanced reservation and can be quite pricey unless you have a larger group. The service can be hit or miss. Free parking makes up for it as well as the ability to shop around Hilldale mall. Tip: get the beer, cheese sauce, and garlic aïoli to dip your french fries in! read more

It doesn't stand out on my list of top choices in Madison but is a great option for when you're in the area or you're looking for a reasonably priced brunch for a larger group. Love being able to sit outside in the summer as it's a bit loud inside, and service has been a lot more consistent the last times I've been. Today we had a large group come in for brunch and the wait was barely 20 min despite it being quite busy. I've come here a couple of times for dinner and was not ever impressed but did recently come here for brunch and preferred the brunch over the dinner menu. My husband and I came here around 11 am on a Sunday and were able to get seated at one of the high top tables without a wait. We were quoted a 20 minute wait to get a table with service. The only downside to sitting at the high top tables is that you need to order at the bar and that can be a little challenging depending on how many people there are. I got the fried chicken and French toast and my husband got the pancakes. Both items were okay. I also got one of the bloody Mary's that had cilantro infused in it and wasn't too big of a fan. I would come back for happy hour since they have an extensive cocktail menu and some of the flavors seem interesting. They also have trivia on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm. read more

Ostensibly a skillet with hash browns, sausage, cheese and egg, this was covered in an oddly sweet but extremely spicy sauce. It was like bad enchilada sauce mixed with a half cup of sugar. Without it, this might have been a somewhat decent dish, but sadly the dish was smothered in it. My companion's wrap was better but too salty. Today's service was extremely poor from the moment we walked in. I asked for a table of 4 and the hostess said "are we still telling people 5 minutes less than the quoted time?" Interesting... When our table was ready, we realized we were seated at a high top table with stools, which are typically the narrow high top tables they leave open for people to mingle at during happy hour. Since we had older adults in our group (60+), we asked if we could be seated elsewhere, and we were told no and that if we wanted a different table, we'd need to get back on the waitlist. This sounded reasonable, however, I checked the waitlist on Yelp and saw the list was only 5 parties long. Immediately after that, we watched 2 parties of 2 young people get seated at a 4 person low-top table. Then, it took 10 minutes for a server to even come by. In fact, our server came by very sparingly. When my food order came out, it was made incorrectly. I didn't get a chance to mention it or even ask for it to be remade as our server did not come back to our table for 20 minutes. In those 20 minutes, I watched him check in on the table directly next to us 4 times. He kept his back towards us during those 4 interactions. He did not refill our water or drink glasses until he brought the receipt. When I finally could mention the mistake in my order, I was not offered anything in exchange. This was a less than enjoyable experience. I hope the staff were having a bad day, although, that would not excuse anyone's behavior. read more

This was one of our favorite places to eat in the greater Madison area, but after hearing the manager on the phone telling an employee who was calling out with pink eye that they would have to get some eye drops and come in, it has dropped down much lower on our rankings. For appetizers we had the crispy brussels sprouts they were delicious whipped feta and cheese curds the cheese curds were great, but they were so very few of them hardly enough for three people to share. I had the case with asparagus the quiche was overdone and not good. My coworker had the Rubin which looked like a cafeteria sandwich and some fries. Had a lovely brunch to celebrate our ten year anniversary of living in Madison. My husband had the beef & Brussels hash. His words, "fantastic"! I had the brew city Benedict, it was good, but the sausage was kinda bland. I was expecting more of a kick with it. I would get it again, minus the sausage. The cheddar chive biscuit that comes with it was delicious! Our drinks were delicious. The staff was very busy as we came during the peak of the brunch hour. When we arrived, the hostess took a minute to acknowledge us which is okay. Once we got sat, our waiter came and took our beverage orders, seemed very attentive but like slightly scared for some reason? He gave good service the whole time though. Once we all had a chance to look at the menu we ordered the fries as an appetizer. They were quite good but came out lukewarm. Also, after a bit the waiter offered to get us plates for our appetizer but those never came. A while later, we ordered our meals, all getting varieties of french toast. While we waited, we noticed that *all* the staff looked scared for some reason? Not just our waiter. They all looked as if they were just scolded to do better before people started showing up. Barely even acknowledging other staff as they went by each other. It took a long while for the food to show up and when it did it ranged from lukewarm to cold. Which was kind of disappointing as the flavor was good. Wonder what it would've been like hot. We think that's due to the fact we were on the second floor...so the trip from the kitchen downstairs up the stairs to us, probably contributes to the cold food. Additionally what was weird is a table who arrived around the time we ordered our food, with the same waiter, was sat, orders taken, food delivered, and bill paid before we were given our bill or finished our food. The atmosphere was cool, bicycles hanging from the ceiling with plants and flowers in their spokes. They also have their christmas decor up already which is neat. Although, when busy it's quite loud and echoey which was a bit overwhelming. Overall not bad experience but, for the price....definitely still not a first choice stop for me. read more

Thursday morning we were yearning for brunch. We arrived @10ish. The restaurant was surprisingly busy. We were seated right away. Service was swift, attentive, friendly and informative. It's brunch. This calls for a Bloody Mary. They have several to choose from. I like spicy so I chose the spicy badger. Good but needed more spice. Our waiter brought me a bunch of hot sauces so I could adjust the heat. They have a great staff. My husband picked a seasonal beer choice from a fairly extensive list. The brunch menu has both breakfast and lunch items. We both chose breakfast and left happy and full. The breakfast tacos were filled with chorizo, scrambled eggs and cheese. Three to an order with crispy fried breakfast potatoes. I could only eat one but the leftovers were great. My hubby ordered the hot mess. Meat, potatoes, eggs, etc. stacked on each other. Oh Café Hollander. I have been a few times to the various Café Hollander's in the Wisconsin area and always get a similar experience: Drinks are kind of meh, soft pretzel bites with beir cheese are the greatest food I have ever tasted, ordering anything else is a dice roll, and your bill at the end if going to be waaayyy more than you thought it would be. I really like the ambiance of the restaurant, they always are beautiful and have a great design. But at the end of the day, when you go out to eat you are going out TO EAT. So let's talk about the food. Typically I stick with apps because I find the menu creations for entrees to be a bit excessive so I tried to play it safe with cheese curds and pretzel bites. Pretzel bites were awesome and that beir cheese is possibly the best beir cheese money can buy. The cheese curds however were overcooked (you can tell this when all the cheese in the cheese curd fries out and you just have a shell of breading) and very oily, upsetting my stomach. The drink I got was also nothing special and didn't taste like it had any alcohol in it. Not to mention it was like $14, which for what amounted to a cup of lemonade is way too much. Overall, I think this place is fine for a quick snack (pretzel bites) and a beverage, but definitely consider going someplace else for a full meal read more

Fun atmosphere. The main meals were very delicious, especially the cheese curds. I do have some criticisms: the sweet potato fries were overcooked, too chewy, and alittle too salty. Our sever was very nice and friendly, but she never came by to see if we needed drink refills; all our glasses were empty. I had a great meal at Cafe Hollander. It's a perfect location in Hildale with close and easy parking. There are tons of seating options including, really nice dining igloos, bar seating, upstairs tables, and dining room seating. We sat in the back dining room area and loved it. Even though it's a big restaurant it still felt cozy, especially on a cold winter night. We started off our meal with the crispy brussel sprouts. They were delicious. Very crispy with an incredible crema drizzled on top. For my main meal I enjoyed the BLT&A. Avocado on a BLT is genius. Everything including the bread was very fresh. I went with frites on the side which is always a great decision. Everything came out on warm plates which was a nice touch. I paired my meal with the High Speed Wit beer. The beer list is extensive including anything from ambers and stouts to blondes and pilsners and everything in between. I loved that the food menu included beer suggestions with certain dishes. For example, I went with the High Speed Wit because it was a recommended pair with the BLT&A. When menus include many options, I love having suggestions like these. Our waitress was attentive and timely. Overall I had a great experience and a delicious meal. We had eaten at two of their locations in the Milwaukee area but not the one in our town. With a City Tin coupon in hand we stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. It was pretty crowded so we opted to eat at the bar versus wait for a table. The bar is big and airy and we had a good time chatting with the bartender and watching the action. Unfortunately they were out of the Luxembourg beer Bofferding so I went with the Milwaukean Bloody Mary. It was quite good and spicy. Even the carrot was hot! We liked the chaser which was one of their exclusive beers - it was a wit. I was really hoping for lunch but of course everyone does brunch so I ordered the brie, ham, and bacon croissant. It was excellent. Even the potatoes were very good. My wife got the quinoa veggie bowl and liked it a lot though it was perhaps a bit spicer than expected. Prices were typical for a place like this.
