This is THE spot for sunset views of Vila Nova de Gaia, Dom Luis Bridge and the Monastery. You get a front row view at the outside tables, and there's a seated section for dinner and a first-come first-served section for drinks and snacks. I got lucky with snagging a snack table as a couple was leaving, and it was just as it was getting dark so I got great photos. There are limited food options with mainly bar food. I got Alheira croquettes and rustic fries, both very good and generous portions. I went with the Altano white wine, which is dry and crisp. The service was slow, mostly because there was only one person servicing all the tables in that section. If you're not in a hurry and don't mind a relaxing pace, then it's a good spot to stop on the way back from crossing the bridge. It's uber touristy though, so be prepared for crowds. We had been walking all morning after a river boat tour, so we decided not to look so hard for a place to eat. We settled for a tourist restaurant on the boardwalk with beautiful views. Service was beyond excellent, very attentive and friendly. Timing of the food was a little off as we received our entrees before all of the appetizers. All the drinks were great, however the food was hit or miss, as described below. We started with some excellent ruby port, a Porto tonic and the reliably great Super Bock beer. Apps: Serra da Estrela sheep cheese (very nice) and a lovely puréed vegetable soup of the day. Both croquettes were delicious (cod & chorizo.) The letdown was the flambé sausage, which they light up at your table. Overwhelmingly salty and the texture was too hard. Our entrees: Lagareiro (octopus) was overcooked and tough. Very hard to chew & cut. Squid ink pasta with prawns was very good according to my sister. Steak with coffee sauce was cooked to preference with the sauce served on the side. My brother-in-law thought it was good. My mother and I ordered their signature cod dish, which we did not enjoy. The fish was overcooked and very hard to chew & swallow. Worst experience ever! The bacalao is basically potatoes, no one peace of bacalao. Horrible food. If you want the view, just stand in front of it. All six plates our family ordered were very poor and they don't add what they have in the menu. All the sides are very cheap. Cheapest food ever. The low starts are for real!! read more

It was our last night in Porto and we had gone on a food tour during the day so I didn't think I'd be hungry, but it turns out...I was. This place had some old reviews where they were hammered for their service, but we were seated quickly and had very friendly waitresses. The view of the Douro River made for a nice meal. We started with a nice Caprese which was delicious and we both ordered a Porto Tonic which was also very refreshing. For our main meals Wifey had the steak with coffee sauce (it was like a gravy with a coffee reduction mixed in) which tasted great...however the steak was a little rare for her liking. I had the Squid ink pasta with prawns, tomato, olive oil and oregano. We didn't linger too long since there was a line to get in, but I could have sat there for another hour enjoying some drinks and the view. I will note here that this place is a bit pricier than most of the other places we had eaten, so keep that in mind for planning purposes. read more

Decent food albeit at a bit higher price point than many of the restaurants in the area that are not on the riverfront. Location on the Douro reviver front is good and a huge plus but the slow service and poor follow up definitely detracts from this restaurant. Overall I give it three stars where location and OK food is offset by slow service and lack of follow up. I would definitely look around at other restaurants if you are hungry and looking for some quick food as this ain't the place for anything Rapido (one of the few Portuguese words I learned on this trip)! read more

Visiting in the middle of summer, Porto riverfront is busy. All restaurants are busy all the day. Also hard to getting seating for a group of 9- lucky enough we were seated within 15 minutes on the bar side with limited menu but our hostess noted if we wait and not order- she can move us on another shared table. The view is beautiful. You are right at the main level of the riverfront with no obstruction of the view. Menu has good selection of food. Food is good and ok but can't beat the view. The drinks are amazing. Service is great. Grilled octopus and garlic shrimp is amazing. The beef sandwich is ok. Must make room for Dessert and coffee. Pasion fruit Mojito and sangria were awesome. My visit to Cafe do Cais was focused on the libations rather than the food. What I liked about it was they delivered the drink quickly and it was very good. I had a terrible experience at Cafe Do Cais. The manager told us they couldn't seat two people, but then proceeded to seat a couple at a table for two right after us. When I asked for cream for my tea, the manager flat out told me they didn't have any, only to later find out they did have cream but the manager just didn't want to give it to me. Went for dinner. Great location. Nice staff. Very slow service even for Porto which the expectation is very low. Food was well prepared however it took so long to serve that the meals were absolutely cold by the time we received them. I got a dish which on the menu stated prawns but ended up being small shrimp instead. A great find on the boardwalk. Walk-in with 8 people at 20:30 on Friday night and getting a table was impressive. Server was very helpful and had fun with us. Grilled octopus was tender and tasty, very well prepared. Everyone else had the tagliatelle with prawns. Great meals for all, and server had great wine choices which showed knowledge of local varieties. The location is phenomenal on the boardwalk and lots of glass walls to see the surroundings and we timed it to be by the water at sunset. It was ideal. A great evening with family. The food here is not great, but it's a worthwhile place to stop and enjoy a drink and/ or some dessert. The service is nice, they have a great wine selection and their egg tarts and chocolate cake make for solid desserts. On the water it's a great place to sit and get a nice view of the city and river. Though we didn't love the food the portions are very generous and the service was good. What we found was that none of the restaurants by the water really had great dining fair. What I would recommend it getting your munchies on within Porto and then wandering down to a place like this for a nice view and drinks. read more

Good: heat lamp, view of the river, customer service trying to do damage control. Bad: food and wine. I really didn't like the 10 year tawny port wine they served, or the cheesecake. The absolute worst food and port wine I've tried in all of Portugal. I sent everything back but they still charged me for the port because they "had to open the bottle for me" (even though it was offered by the glass so that shouldn't be my problem). The manager tried to come out and repair the situation. He was very friendly, and said he wouldn't choose this brand of port if he had the option, but that that the owner is tied to a specific company for all of his businesses. He offered me some of the 20 year instead. It was better but not good. I couldn't finish it all. This is more of a money grab than a proper way to experience the culture in Porto. I would highly recommend staying away. There are delicious restaurants farther down along the quay that care about flavour and quality, while these ones are just trying to operate a business with the highest margins. Suggestion: go here for beer and a view. Beautiful patio with heat lamps when it's cold. read more

We loved this place so much when we had lunch here, that we came back for dinner the next night. The atompshere is lovely done on the quay, with comfy chairs, heaters and blankets to keep you warm in winter at night time, sun soaked during the day. At the end of a long day, we decided to stay close to our hotel and grab a bite at the closest location, Cafe do Cais. We never imagined that the food would be excellent and the price quite reasonable. One of us had octopus, and the other ate grilled pork. Our appetizers were peppers (sautéed in olive oil) and mushrooms in fleur du sel and oil. The mushrooms might have been beef. The chocolate mousse and creme brûlée were also very good. We had local wine by the glass, and the bill was 87 Euros. The breads were also quite good. We imagined that given the beautiful location, it would be overpriced and under quality, but just the opposite was true. read more

Ate here a few times while in Porto. Cannot ask for a better location. Just across the river from the Sandeman winery. Lots of tables and most of the staff is pretty good. The Portuguese steak, hamburger, and caprese salad are all pretty good, but the sauce on the francesinha is uninspired. It was the only place we tried the sandwich, so it could have just been the way the sauce is normally. Most servers speak English well, so it's not an issue ordering. It's way too pricey for the area, even the locals told us that you'll pay too much there, but there was always seating available when we walked by, so it was just easier to eat there. Definitely try the charizo in port sauce - so good! read more
