Vanroselen Fine Chocolates - Charming little chocolate shop.

Tried a few Bonnat bars I havent had before, and some newer Dutch brands using cacao from Indonesia (Bali) and Mexico (xoconusco). They also had Pralus, Amadei, etc. They have some homemade filled chocolates, looking forward to trying that next time.

Before I get into the shop itself, The wife and I need to note the owner and hostess. She is, without a doubt, the nicest person we've ever encountered in any shop, restaurant or store. She truly cares about her wares, and seems to care in turn about your experience and that you be happy while you are there; if anyone ever earns the designation "hostess" it is her. For lack of a better descriptive, she is grandmotherly in the best way. My wife would insist (and I would agree) to give this shop five stars based on her service alone, even if the shop was drab and the chocolates mediocre. Fortunately, neither is the case. The chocolates are universally excellent and artisinally produced. She sells them in packaged form to take with you and savor in your home; however she also prepares a hot chocolate for you to enjoy in the shop or on the go, and it is incredibly rich without being too sweet. While not exactly inexpensive, it is also more than in-line with high end chocolates in Europe. What about the store itself? Well, the sense that our hostess belongs in a Harry Potter book as a kindly, magical shopkeeper is enhanced by the store's appearance. It radiates warmth as it is filled with chocolate-related antiques and knickknacks, charming designed displays and shelves overstuffed with quaintly designed sweets packaging. But make no mistake: the shop itself is meticulously clean and neat. As you can tell, I and my wife could gush about this shop for a long while. But I'll leave you with: go visit and say hello.

My favorites are salted caramel, rose lychee, vanilla, and chocolate lavender. We love trying the monthly specials too. This month was Lemoncello... Delicious! Good customer service is a commodity in this town so I had to look into this place... As a result of the mistake and the story of it's correction, I'd consider myself now to be a Tout regular. I buy the macaroons as gifts for people, I use them to impress my bosses and let's be honest, I cheekily gift them to myself as well. :) I also took part in the macaroon workshop which was great! My only complaint here was that we weren't able to do everything ourselves but due to the nature of macaroons, it would need to be a pretty long workshop (try 3 days!). The price of the workshop might seem steep (I think 60 euros) but I came out of there with almost 2 full boxes of mini macaroons so it's totally worth it if you ask me - not to mention the afternoon of educational fun and the owner is his own brand of eye-candy... :P

We were quite glad the find VV, but sorry to discover that the shop is not set up for those to enjoy their newly purchased bounty in house. VV is strictly a 'take-away'' type affair. One finds at VV truffles galore, bars a-plenty, broken bits of chocolate sold in 100 gram increments and lovely gateaux. I think I spied the last of a ganache on our visit. The owner is a very friendly sort who chats easily with patrons about his product. In short, he cares. The cacao is sustainably sourced from a single farm in Costa Rica & one sees that the owner takes pride in maintaining a solid relationship with the farmers. The truffle selection is varied with flavours including Guinness & Fruit Cake--yes, *that* Fruit Cake--and we were keen to try many of them. Among our selection were Fennel, Tonka Bean and Coffee. The coffee was dense and rich. -a sure-fire hit among espresso lovers. The tonka bean beauty is a must-try, especially for those who live in the USA, where use of the tonka bean has been banned by the FDA. I think ingesting a tonne of tonka may cause cancer in lab rats, so, humans, beware! The fennel was quite mild in flavour and those who have a real yen for fennel/anise/licorice will probably be left wanting. Chocolate fans: do plan a visit to Van Velze's when in A'dam! Also: check out VV's website for ordering goodies online. :)

An almost clinical cleanliness immediately conveyed the care put into the products. The ex-dancer, now chocolatier, kindly asks me to wait two seconds as he finishes his task. He walks up and offers freshly prepared hand oil, made from a plethora of natural ingredients. He tells me this is a little side project he does beside the chocolate, and it happens to be selling extremely well. He takes my hand, explains the contents of the mixture and waits for permission to place two droplets into my awaiting palm. Soft skin with a pleasantly rosy scent are the result. The Chocolatier is strikingly handsome with kind eyes, he comes across personable and clearly has an attentive attention to detail. The chocolates are without a doubt some of the finest available here in Amsterdam. They taste as if they are decadent and filled with all the naughty things a health conscious person wouldn't touch. However it is quite the opposite. An organic, natural blend of vitamin filled, fine ingredients make it as nutritious as it is exquisite. One piece is rich and dense enough to satisfy even the sweetest tooth. The minimalist packaging is the perfect way to present his creations. 4.5/5 (I'll be back soon to share my discovery with a friend.)
