We were greeted warmly at the door and seated at a table near the bar. We ordered margaritas. I must say I was underwhelmed. Clearly, premixed and contained too much syrup. The Honey was so confused and disappointed. We started with Chili Con Carne and Ceviche as appetizers. He enjoyed the chili but, we both prefer our ceviche prepared in lime/citrus juices. This one was prepared in a red sauce. Our entrees of Cazuela del Mar and Ensalada de Taco (Chicken) were fresh, flavorful and delicious! These meals saved the day. Flan for dessert was an excellent choice. We've decided this establishment is worth a return visit. We will try other dishes sans the drinks and apps that didn't tickle our fancies this time.

Before we ate, we learned a little about the restaurant, the inspiration behind the menu, and the flavors in each dish. Fun fact: Ixchel is the Mayan Goddess, which adds even more meaning to the restaurant's name. Now, let's talk about the food! We enjoyed a tasting of several dishes, including tableside guacamole with chips and salsa, tortilla soup, handmade corn tortillas topped with different proteins, pibil (slow-roasted pork), a ceviche-style dish with shrimp and scallops, chicken mole, and sautéed shrimp with sweet potato. Every dish had its own unique flavor, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. My favorite of the night was definitely the handmade corn tortillas with the different proteins; they were so yummy! Of course, there was dessert! For dessert we had coconut flan and lemon cake, and both were the perfect sweet ending to the meal. Even though our dinner was outside, I did get a look inside the restaurant, and the interior is just as beautiful as the patio. I can't wait to come back and try more of the menu!

Empanada tasted and smelled like the beef was old. It was primarily filled with air and the pastry was far too brown. We also ordered a burrito bowl with chicken, which was the furthest thing from white meat. The chicken meat is small crumbs of dry, VERY dark meat with seasoning - can't even be called chunks or pieces, it's chicken crumbs. Pico tastes good but the tomatoes were nearly white and there was just a sprinkling of it on the bowl anyway. Same for the lettuce and rice - they were just filler, not tasty at all. Guac was great, however the chips were way too thick and burnt. Service was fine enough, but I ordered takeout and then sat while my food was cooked and no one really went out of their way to say anything to the one customer in the place. I felt that more attention could've been paid to service and quality food prep seeing as how they were very clearly not busy. Not the best, not the worst. Doesn't warrant another visit for sure.
