Protip: If you don't see an email confirmation after making a reservation, check your SPAM folder. I booked a ticket to LA but two days later decided to carpool with a friend instead. CSB's website says no cancellations and no exceptions, but I noticed that they hadn't charged my card yet so I emailed and ask if they could make an exception, and they did! They wrote back quickly and cheerfully canceled my booking without penalty. Don't count on exceptions being a regular occurrence, but from what I've experienced, CSB knows how to make a customer happy. read more

Wasn't bad at all. Took the shuttle bus from SF to LA. 8 hours as expected, little to no traffic. Both of the drivers were nice (the bus switches drivers at the halfway point). We stopped in front of Burger King at the halfway point, would have been more pleasant if we didn't step outside to the smell of cow manure. That didn't really factor in to my rating although I would prefer In-N-Out. The bus was mostly full of young foreigners, students, and travelers. It didn't feel sketchy at all. $35 one way, but could be cheaper if I booked it earlier. $40 highest. Not bad considering that the cheapest plane tickets have gone up to $69 one way now (not including tax and fees). For a poor college student, that's a pretty good deal. read more

I was leery after reading a few reviews but was pleasantly surprised. The drivers were friendly and the travel was pretty quick. Just under 7 hours from San Jose to Santa Monica (and that includes several stops in LA). My ticket was $40 and with gas prices high and going higher, this is very reasonable. The bus was in adequate shape, I didn't use the bathroom so I can't speak to that. The first driver played a movie on the in bus TVs - which was actually kinda cool. They departed San Jose on schedule and arrived on schedule. I asked the guy on the phone what condition the bus was in - he said it hasn't broken down for a year and a half. The other travelers on my bus were mostly a younger crowd - 20's-30's and were quiet and respectful. Why not 5 stars? - The phone number to call them - yes - if someone's not there it goes to voicemail which is full. So that's kind of annoying. - The bus does not say "california shuttle bus" on it. I think it said B & B shuttle or something like that. I almost missed the bus because I thought it was a different company. Thank god I asked the guy outside and got on at the last minute. I'm not sure why others have rated this service so low, because, occasionally an unexpected thing happens, BUT NOT WITH THEM! ...ĺGreyhound and other entities I use to transfer or commute from LA to SF and vice versa how by far been less reliable .) It is the cheapest way to go to and from LA, and drops you off in the best part of wla, Santa Monica, rather than downtown where all the other buses drop you off. When you live in San Francisco or the Bay Area ( I live in Foster City,) you can get in their bus at the Bart in downtown San Francisco, or, the Caltrain at San jose. They're always on time. They're very quick to get to la and back to the bay, too. I've taken Greyhound, megabus, AND boltbus. CA SHUTTLE BUS IS BETTER, with both price AND service. And, I by far, recommend this place ( even though I forgot to get my bag off of the bus once, but, that was PARTIALLY my fault as they stop at 3 places in bay area- thus organize the luggage according to where you say you're getting off. I got off at an earlier stop in San Jose rather than San Francisco ). There's ample room, good service, always on time, never cancelled, and- it's the quickest way instead of driving or fighting with the ghetto people at greyhound or Megabus, especially if you have children. They allow you to put strollers and multiple bags and help you doing it.If you can make it on one of the two trips they do per day, you have the best with them. ...There are probably only three people in this business: the owner and the two drivers of the buses... but they are still on top of it. Bus broke down almost exactly half-way from LA to SF. This is, in itself, forgivable. We waited in the hot desert sun, baking and being eaten alive by ants for 3.5 hours waiting for a new bus without water or food. The new bus arrived, no water. We spent another 3.5 hours on the trip home-- I could feel my throat closing from either ant bites or dehydration by the time we crossed the bay bridge. To make up for this horrible experience, the bus company offered us $10... off of our next purchase with them. That's $5/person if you are a married couple booking together. I took the basic shuttle ($45) from Santa Monica to San Francisco and despite not being thrilled with my first impression of the white shuttle van that pulled up (rather than a bus of some sort as I had imagined) overall I was quite pleased. I don't like to fly and took the Greyhound down (ugh) so this was superior to both. The driver for the second lap of the trip (Button Willow to SF) was friendly and funny. Also, he claimed they would be introducing new shuttles this week with more frills. It looks like this service has had it's ups and downs and I like to supprt the little guy, especially when he's filling a niche ignored by others so I will probably use them again next time I find myself without a ride to LA. read more

In comparison to Greyhound California Shuttle Bus is a dream. The people on it are not ghetto (I've had too many scary incidents on Greyhound) and slightly cheaper than Greyhound. Being dropped off in Union Square next to Powell Street BART is convenient. The AC blasted cold and there were TVs. My bus didn't have wifi as advertised so that bugged me but I'll get over it. All in all - you can't complain if you pay peanuts to get down to LA. read more

3.7 Stars The last time I've used this company was 2 years ago.. and I was pleased with their service. They offer DAILY shuttle between Northern and Southern California. What I like about this shuttlebus compared to the other tourbuses is that it was clean and that the driver didn't really talk much. It's also really convenient that they have everyday departures from NORTH/SOUTH CAL.. all you do is call and make a reservation and you pay when you're on the shuttle. For the Nor Cal Folks, they offer pickup at S.F. Hilton and Bay Fair BART Station. There're more dropoff locations at Los Angeles on their website. Also, I remembered that they will accomodate (if there isn't a lot of passengers that day) to pick you up closer to your house/hotel if you cannot make it to their designated pick up location. What sucks is that they have several "stops" they make before they take off on the freeway.. I got onto the shuttle around 11pm in Walnut, CA and didn't arrive in downtown San Francisco till around 9pm. Overall, a great shuttle to use if you can't find cheap tickets or if you need to travel at the last minute. Otherwise, I would suggest spending $20 to get those special airfares from United or Alaska. read more

Yo SF to LA for only $15. Amazing. Easy to catch in downtown SF at Powell St or the Caltrans station. Buses are actually pretty clean, even have bathrooms. Beats the hell out of hitch hiking. And if you are paranoid or weight challenged you can just buy the seat next to you and you are still getting a good deal. They even allow pets as long as they are in a carrier but they have to sit on your lap unless you buy the seat next to you. You get two pieces of luggage. If you need more than that, rent a Uhaul truck. The bus makes good time, especially after the driver has 4 or 5 cups of coffee. There is a rest stop for 30 minutes about halfway to LA. Good thing too if you are taking your pet with you. No wifi, they are still fantasizing about it, no toilet paper so pack a roll for the trip. After reviewing their website, I see that it actually says you CAN bring more luggage, so I wrote them again to verify this, and instead of addressing my concerns, they once again told me to go somewhere else. General Review: I've taken the CA Shuttle Bus at least a dozen times now. I usually ride from San Jose to North Hollywood. If you read most negative reviews on CA Shuttle Bus, they will complain about the $1 the driver's ask for as you switch driver's at the halfway point. Really? A negative review over $1. The driver's are great guys and they go out of their way to make the rides enjoyable. An extra $1 is the least you can do. Pros: -Friendly driver and owner who joke around and are always helpful -Reasonably priced -Big enough seats (no bigger or smaller than any other bus) -Clean and never smelly -San Jose location picks up and drops off right in front of the Caltrain station so you can easily catch the train up to SF Cons: -Contrary to what their site may advertise, there is no WiFi -No seat belts (most buses don't have them but still) -Bathrooms aren't that nice but what did you expect from a bus? I was trying to catch the bus for my friend in Hollywood Location and i called them to inform i was going to be late 1-2 minutes because there is something going on 5 blocks away. So the driver ( also owner ) who has that 408 area code number picked up the phone and he was extremely rude to me and to my friend saying all those ignorant words even though i was only late 1 minute to the location. I booked my trip from SF to LA despite the numerous bad reviews here on yelp. I was not sure what to expect but one thing was clear: it couldn't be much. Well, the day of travel came around the corner and I was patiently waiting (with quite some others) at Powell Station for the bus to show up. It came, eventually half an hour delayed. But I knew this from the reviews and was not too surprised. We started driving very quickly with a full bus. In San Jose we stopped for gas and the coordinator/manager (not sure) came to tell us that they had some fires the previous day and needed to drive another route and that today, they wanted to make sure they have enough gas, in case something like this happened again. The guy was friendly and joked around with us, he furthermore introduced us to the driver who was friendly and kind. I felt comfortable in the bus at all times, also with the driving style of both the drivers (midway the drivers changed, the one that came from LA took over and drove back to LA - this is great because then you know that the drivers are knowledgeable about the driving habits in their cities) One stop is enough in my opinion, since there also is a toilet on the bus. In many reviews I read that there is no toilet paper. Well, I did not use the bathroom but usually on such low cost trips it's always helpful to bring hand sanitizer and tissues. just in case... My ticket was $33 for one way. I know I could have gotten a much cheaper ticket when booking in advance and maybe also not at Labor Day weekend. Well, I still think that $33 is a very reasonable price for a booking one week in advance and regarding the fact that there was Monday off. I would definitely recommend the bus ride to others and consider taking it myself again. With keeping in mind to bring tissues and a book (since there is no wifi - which is not too bad, we can do 8 hours without, right?) and not being too strict on arrival/waiting times it is a very pleasant and cheap way to travel between the two cities. read more

First off, I hate that they continuously tell me they are a small family business just trying to make it. Yah, and so are all the other family businesses in the US. Secondly, they charged me a $10 "change fee" even though they called me and told me that my reservation was a mistake since I had put the wrong date (same day as the day I made the reservation) and I had put my destination and departure point from the same place. Thirdly, the bus broke down before we even left and could not move. The buses they have are not tour busses but more like upgraded school busses. They do not seem very new and the bathrooms are horrible. Fourthly, they have raised their prices again it used to be $40 one way now it is $45 There are better options out there for traveling from the bay area to Los Angeles (low fare & better buses) and I would rather wait till the next day to use another company than ride with ca shuttle bus again read more

The CA Shuttle Bus isn't too bad. I would say the two biggest pros are the friendly drivers and the fact that they are pet friendly!! Their prices aren't too bad either. I booked a trip from SF to LA round trip for Christmas. Nightmare both ways. The day of the trip I got a text message and an email saying my trip at noon was being delayed to 11pm at night. The reason given was that the bus driver got drunk the night before. Instead of finding another driver, they rescheduled us for another trip for the middle of the night. No refund, just a grinning sobered up driver taking us to La in the middle of the night. On my trip back, the driver was a half hour late. Then he had the balls to ask for tips multiple times throughout the trip. The same driver who got drunk and messed up Christmas, shows up late to pick us up. The bus in the middle of nowhere, suddenly gets hazy inside and starts to smell like burning chemicals. Instead of communicating with us he pulls over, says nothing and now I'm sitting here in the middle of California writing this review of CA shuttle bus. I will never ever take them again. I have thoroughly learned my lesson. The reviews on here saying how bad it is aren't lying, it's a truly awful experience. It's shocking they are still in business. Update: we waited an hour. Someone called the office and they had no idea we were stranded. The first person didn't believe us that we were stranded. Then someone else called and the person on the line wanted to argue about the number of people a bus holds, as opposed to help us. Update 2: the driver gave us some lip service about another bus coming to get us from San Jose. Supposedly within an hour. I don't believe him but others seem to be clinging to some faith. I can't believe this company is operational. How do they make any money, this is truly the worst travel experience I have ever taken. Update 3: two hours have passed and still no new bus. There is always a promise of another bus coming "soon". Uber X is pricing at 100 bucks. I've attempted calling one many times, but no users are nearby to answer my call for help. I might have to hitch hike. I genuinely don't know what else to do. Update 4: it's time to drink. We've been waiting for the promised rescue bus and I've made the trek to a gas station to grab some beers. This should help pass the time. Captain's log. Star date 12282016 our rescue frigate has arrived. We are beginning final procedures before jumping to hyperspace back to the Hipster Nebula also known as San Francisco. OK, more often than not, people write reviews when they have a bad experience. I'd like to see a service like this succeed because I think it's a great idea, so I'm here to say that my experience was fine just to balance the discussion. Not to say that the other reviews on here aren't legitimate, I just hope that those who have had a good experience will eventually outweigh those times that haven't. So I took this for the first time 1-way from SF to LA. I usually prefer to fly Southwest or Virgin since the road trek is so long, but since my trip was last minute, I couldn't find any affordable flights back to LA. With this bus, I had another option, given that I had an extra day to travel. It's just what I expected it to be. It got me from point A to point B at a low fare of 40 bucks that I reserved the week before. If I were able to get the $5 dollar rate, I would have probably felt even better about it. The departure was a tad late from SF, but this was only due to some obvious gridlocked traffic in downtown SF. I called the service 5 minutes after the stated pick-up time and the bus not there, and the guy politely told me that he was 2 blocks away stuck in the gridlock, but the bus would be there in 5 minutes. It was. Overall, the ride was smooth. The AC worked fine, it was clean, I had two seats for myself and was able to get a lot of studying done. The demographic taking it was all young people, students, and young foreign travelers and this made me feel comfortable. No weirdos tried to start conversations with me, while at the same time, I could ask the other passengers questions if I needed to or if I wanted to start conversation. The bus itself was not too spectacular, and the bathroom didn't have running water or wet naps, but the toilet did work and it was clean. Before leaving SF, we were all asked to tip the 1st driver $1 at the midway point and that would be all they requested- we wouldn't need to tip the 2nd driver. Seemed reasonable to me- I gave her $2 bucks. The driver was polite, and just drove. There was one stop in the middle, where we switched drivers. This was also the same stop that greyhound stopped at, and our bus seemed much happier and comfortable than they did. The second driver was equally pleasant. The bus arrived at the North Hollywood station about 7:15. The schedule stated that we would get to DTLA by 7, so we were behind schedule, most likely due to traffic in SF. People going to Santa Monica and 7th Street Downtown would transfer to vans while the bus took the others to a hotel and to Union Station. I live right off the Redline, so I just decided to take that from North Hollywood rather than take the shuttle vans to DTLA. Overall, I rate this a positive experience and good alternative if flying is not within budget. Optimally, if you reserve early, get a $5 dollar ticket, and have 7-8 hours to travel, this would be great for you to sit, read, study, and travel between 2 great cities. read more

I was definitely a bit wary of riding this bus after reading some of the reviews on here (and I already had purchased the tickets!) but I found no problem with this bus service. The bus showed up within 20 minutes of time stated on the website (I think the Santa Monica reviewer didn't look on the website for when the bus is supposed to depart that station!). Bus was reasonably clean; driver was friendly. The crowd were mostly young-ish people, some international travelers and some just shuttling between LA and SF. The bathroom amenities were quite basic, so no running water or anything but you can take a pee if you need to. The 20 minute stop half-way is great as it gives one the opportunity to stretch one's legs as well as use a proper restroom. We got to our destination within a reasonable amount of lateness (something like 40 minutes, I think). On the way back we had to change buses at the half-way point, which some people were quite unhappy about since that second bus was a bit more cramped and drove jerkily. But I was actually impressed that they had this extra bus considering there was an unexpected problem with the originally scheduled bus, and that we still made it to SF in a timely manner, although with a bit less comfort. And for the price, that's about all I expected. A couple of tips to maximize your bus riding enjoyment: Make sure to write down/print out your reservation numbers and info as soon as you make the reservation. Call the bus phone number a few days in advance to confirm. Show up to the bus stop a few minutes before the time listed on the bus's website. Pro tip: bring ear plugs or headphones, hand sanitizer, and maybe a small pillow to support your lower back. I'm likely to use this bus service again. read more

Overall I was satisfied, but not blown away by this bus service. Until we get high speed rail I think it definitely fills a niche for those looking for a cheap alternative to flying. They were a little late getting there, and with no obvious way to tell if the bus had already come and gone it got a little nervewracking as the minutes passed. I called the phone # and got right through to the owner who said they were a couple blocks away. It then took a while to drive first to bay fair bart then all the way to san jose before taking the pacheco pass route. Also took a while to make the first couple stops in LA before I finally got to union station. All things considered it took about 8 hours, which is what is advertised, so can't really complain there. The owner seemed like a reasonable, nice guy; cracked a couple jokes, collected money, described the process and then got off the bus at san jose. We were asked to tip the driver $1-2. The ride was fine, had a 20min break at coalinga, and they showed two movies (Beverly Hills Chihuahua...seriously...? and Terminator Salvation). The bus was clean and functional, with a bathroom in the back. All in all I'd recommend to a friend if they were looking for something like this, but if you plan in advance it doesn't beat some of the airline deals that are about the same price but get you there in ~3-4 hours total time. I'm writing this review purely because I thought my experience was completely different than the numerous reviews. Here's the bottom line: CAShuttleBus is the cheapest option to get between Los Angeles and San Francisco. I just checked price fares for July 2016 (it's currently June 9th 2016) and they're $11 dollars one way. $21 dollars for a round trip? That's insanely cheap. So here's what you need to know: +Pick up time was a little delayed, maybe by 10-15 minutes +You can store a bag underneath the bus so you can bring luggage +The bus is rather spacious, there's an option to purchase the seat next to you for $15 dollars if you're really worried about it +Most of the other bus riders are between 20-30 years old, cheap college-age people. Although there was one or two VERY old people as well. +There are no seatbelts, but they drive Interstate 5, which is one of the flatest and boringest roads in the country. +In my experience, the people traveling are rather communal and don't mind talking on the bus +There's a stop at the half way point where you can eat at McDonalds/TacoBell/Burger King, although they say they'll leave without you, they did a pretty rigorous check that everyone was back before we left. +Yes the bus driver asks for a tip of $1 dollar, but think about it: Even with that tip this is still the cheapest option. Personally, I read on the bus. Talked briefly to some people across the aisle, listened to some music, and the trip flew by. I can't imagine why someone would weigh their rating so heavily on how late the bus was-- it's a seven hour bus ride, you're probably going to be a little late anyway. I don't think people understand the give and take of price vs. quality. This is the cheapest option and what you're getting is cheap. You will get a bus seat that will take you to your destination. I am a student and usually prefer cheap public transportation ...I LOVED MY BUS RIDE FROM SF TO LA DUE TO SEVERAL REASONS... 1. The bus was clean and smelled nice (unlike some other buses which reek of restroom smell) 2. the drivers were very friendly, they attached plastic bags at every seat so we could use them as trash bags 3. the bus is non stop once it leaves SF until it reaches north hollywood (except for a 15-30 min food break), the total ride was 7.5 hours 4. very comfortable seats. 5. it stops at several places inside SF and LA so it is very convenient for students and tourists .. it drops you off at LA union station which connects you to practically any part of the city unlike the greyhound station which is located in a very odd area in LA, so you end up taking a CAB back home. which becomes expensive 6. you can take the overnight bus and sleep all 7.5 hours in a nice, cozy bus seat and not be tired (for flights , usually airport shuttles pick up 3 hours before flight time... you spend 2.5 hours loitering at the airport and it is impossible to sleep in a 50 min flight) 7. it is ONLY 40 $ I will use this bus again definitely read more

I rode the bus between LA-SF half a dozen times and the service itself was quite acceptable in relation to the cost. Each and every single time I booked in advance on their web site and showed up w/ my reservation paper at the pick-up location. Everything pretty much went off without a glitch. The only thing I would echo another review is some safety issue with the driver. On the N. Calif segment, the driver who called himself "Captain" was on his cell phone for a long time and not paying full attention on the road. One could tell his inattention to the road by his last-minute brake application to slow down or wavering. It was obvious that the call was not business-related in nature. It is a serous safety issue when someone is carrying 50+ passengers with a big bus driving at 70 mph on a highway - a danger to the passengers and other vehicles on the road. read more

Example: the website said they dropoff at the Wilshire Grand, but they cancelled that stop and we didn't find out till we were on the bus and happened to mention it. - Driver for SF-Coalinga leg talked on his cell phone the ENTIRE trip, also while eating. Not a careful driver on Highway 5 at 70mph. A bit unnerving. - We heard tales from other travelers about poor phone service, but we were OK by booking online. Would I take it again? Back around thanksgiving, I took the bus home to SF from LA, and the bus was overbooked, so we sat there waiting for two hours for another, while the driver DIDNT SPEAK ENGLISH!!! I thought what a cruel joke! Despite my earlier troubles, I received a voucher for one free ride, which I then tried to use. After scheduling my trip, about a week before I wanted to change my departure date from a Thursday to a Friday. After trying to change through their glitchy website, I emailed them several times with no response. The only not-good thing is that there is no Wi-Fi even though they say that there is--at least not the 4 times I've travelled. Otherwise it is great, especially since they drop-off in Santa Monica. I have used ca shuttle bus multiple times and have enjoyed every experience. The ride may take a while but the seats are comfortable and the trip extremely affordable! The view out the large windows are quite nice and make you feel not cramped up! The crew has always been kind and considerate. If you need a way to travel between la and sf, try them out! read more

You get what you pay for with this company. They never leave on time and always blame traffic. Imagine if you showed up late to work every day and blamed traffic. No WiFi although it's been promised. WiFi is spotty on I-5 anyway. Only USB outlets. If you book the last two rows on the driver side, there is very little leg room, so it might be worthwhile paying 15 extra for the seat next to you. The driver to LA will make an unscheduled stop to a fruit stand which just prolongs the journey. It takes them 8 hours (don't believe their posted times) minimum to get to LA because they switch drivers midway. The other services take only 7 hours. It's the worst service of the three major competitors, so unless you get the cheap seats you may as well go with Megabus and be more comfortable and save an hour. read more

I travel CA Shuttle Bus around SF and LA for couple times. My trips were pretty smooth most of the time, and the drivers are not only really nice, but also very dependable. I lost my wallet at my latest trip, but I wasn't sure where I lost it and very anxious about it. The company contacted me to pick it up the second day, and I REALLY appreciate it! CA Shuttle Bus by far is the worst transpiration I've ever come across. First the bus pick up was late. The moment I went inside the bus I instantly regretted my purchase. Inside the bus looked like the interior design was out of date. Before sitting inside the bus the driver allowed all passengers inside the bus it wasn't until out last pick up the driver made us pull up our reservation emails. This had killed so much time once a passenger couldn't provide an email. Common sense as a business instead of rushing passengers the driver should check all emails ahead of time. After 20 minutes of conflict over the email the bus driver finally drove. Within two hours of the drive the bus driver drove to a farmers stand and claimed that was a pit stop. I had previously read from another yelper the driver had made a pit stop to buy fruit in which he did for my ride. What was the final straw with my ride were I saw multiple baby roaches inside. I had called the phone number provided for the company and had spoke to Kaz and had told him everything and asked for a refund in which he allowed however asked I email customer service which I did. After emailing Yvonne she did not give me the refund as promised. Her email went to say that the insects were from customers that is understandable however it is a company's part in cleaning up. With horrible customer service and a horrifying bus ride I will never ride with CA shuttle bus again. Something I also suggest is to not give your money to this shady company. I've been taking this bus for the past two months now to see my girlfriend in LA. I've taken at least 4 round trips between San Francisco and LA. I read the recent reviews, and maybe I'm just getting lucky, but it's been a smooth ride every time. I would give it a 5-star rating, but I've decided on 4 stars for the following reasons: 1) It's becoming more and more difficult to get the $5 price. I reserve way in advance, but I'm still averaging $25. I guess that's not bad for a one-way fare at all, but they are known as the "$5 Bus." 2) They have been late by 15-20 minutes a few times. All in all, I've been very happy with California Shuttle Bus's service, and I have recommended it to many of my friends who were also happy with it. I had relied on Megabus before, but since they terminated their service, California Shuttle Bus is the only one left that offers this service at such a low price! I'll keep my ratings updated if I run into any bad experiences. read more

There is no Wifi. There is a bathroom...but no toilet paper. And there is mandatory tipping of the drivers (this is how they get paid). Terrible. Pay the extra couple bucks and take a legitimate bus service. read more
