I realized a week before my recent tour of Europe that our itinerary concluded with three nights in…read moreVenice, and I had hotel plans for just one of those. Yikes! While the aforementioned hotel around the corner from St. Mark's square promised palatial accommodations, a palatial price (relatively speaking) accompanied the reservation. I sought a less exorbitant guest bill, and this guest house overlooking the Grand Canal delivered spectacularly. For $146, I scored two nights at an unbeatable location. Casa Favaretto's charm was unending, and the lovely experience began with a gorgeous and heart-warming smile from owner (I presume) Francesca. She helped me schlep heavy luggage up a flight of stairs to our sizable room. Understand the ballgame before booking here in the humid summer months. There is no elevator to the second floor or air conditioning. While that might be a deal breaker for you, I hope it won't. A mammoth plug-in fan next to the bed reduced the brunt of the broil. I just skipped sliding under the covers and was quite comfortable. I hauled my suitcase across 7 or so bridges in the walk from St. Mark's Square. What's one more staircase? The guest house was far from full, leaving the community bathroom rarely occupied. The shower featured some of the best water pressure during my time in Europe and plenty of space to hang or set clothes away from the commode and shower stall, a novelty among the places I stayed, especially the cruise ship. A community refrigerator allowed me to cool any water or soda bottles I had accrued. For the reasonable cost of 1-2 Euros, it also offered shelves filled with cold still and sparkling water and sodas. Did I mention the location? Good luck finding a better deal anywhere in Venice but especially on the Grand Canal. The view from my bedroom's front window was enchanting and breathtaking. While Favaretto's delightful simplicity may not include elaborate bells and whistles or round-the-clock desk service, astute travelers shouldn't need them. Consider this the perfect home base for walking and exploring Venice's crooked and less packed back streets. The one-bridge jaunt to catch an Alilaguna to Marco Polo (at 4 a.m. no less) was facile and a stress-free and bargain way to reach the airport on the mainland. In short, my stay at Casa Favaretto was wonderful, and I'll be back, especially when temperatures dip.

The hostel has been family run for 60 years and is currently run by Francesca, the sweetest woman. The hostel is impeccably clean, in the greatest location, and is so easy to get to from the airport. When we arrived we were welcomed by Francesca who showed us our room and made reservations at osteria alla Staffa (go!). She was so kind and accomodating through out the whole stay, and makes me wish there were more hostels like that in Italy! I would 100000% recommend it!

Booked a two bedroom apartment style stay at San Marco Boutique by Wonderful Italy…read more Great location with lots of shops around & has a balcony canal view + steps from the Rialto Bridge. St. Mark's Basilica is also only a few minutes walk from here. Restaurants and shops are all within a couple hundred feet away. Every corner there is a bridge you can takes pictures at. Insanely beautiful. In the apartment we had, there was three balconies! Two in the living room & one in one of the bedrooms. Directly above the canal and can see gondolas + boats rowing by. Issues we had: Checking in was kind of a pain because the check in time is at 3:00pm/15:00 and we took an early train from Florence to Venezia Santa Lucia in Venice. They did not allow early check in and did not have a place for us to store our luggages. I messaged them through Whatsapp after talking on the phone with them & they preferred Whatsapp communication. They sent a link of a place where you could rent storage for your luggages, however, the website was in Italiano & could not get the website to work. There's four of us, so two of my family members stayed to watch the luggages & bags, while we walked around. They are a bit unresponsive but rooms were nice. Another issue we had was they have all these amenities such as washer but no laundry detergent, stove to cook but if you try to cook here, you'll be charged an extra €500, & toilet but didn't not provide toilet paper. Luckily we brought our own toilet paper lol. I would consider staying here again because the rooms are great sizes & apartment is nice, BUT for the price at €407, I think it could most definitely be better & could have provided MORE of just basic necessities that guests would literally need. I can imagine a guest needing to use the bathroom and not have toilet paper rolls. And if they were not as lucky as us, which we brought our own, that would be a terrible & annoying experience.

If you have a larger group, or don't care so much about amenities, this is very solid for its price. Yes, this is technically a service apartment and not a hotel, so adjust your expectations for amenities. There is no elevator, so prepare to lug your bags up a few flights of stairs. The shower was interesting because the shower head doesn't have an attachment on the wall so you have to take handheld showers. Little packets of 2-in-1 body wash/ shampoo are provided but nothing else. The room, like I mentioned, is very sizeable. The bed and bedding were both extremely comfortable and I slept very well. Two smaller issues, we did see what looked like mold stains in a cabinet (inactive, not moist) and there were quite a few mosquitoes in the room. This could be a Venice problem though, not a hotel problem, since we're surrounded by water. We were greeted by Mateo, who is a wonderful host. He was very friendly and communicates with us very promptly through Expedia (where I booked this). Overall, I enjoyed our stay here! The location is hard to beat and about a 3 min walk to the San Angelo port, which is where your water bus would stop if you're taking that from the train station.

The Hotel Montepiana is a small hotel located in Mestre which is a convenient location for visiting…read morethe wonderful city of Venice. The hotel prices are much more reasonable and Venice can be easily accessed by train or bus within 30 minutes or less. The Hotel is located reasonably central to the many restaurants, shops and bars and it is also close to the railway station and also buses to Venice Airport. It is located on a quiet residential area which meant a good nights sleep without outsider noise. It has to be said that this hotel is basic but rooms do have en-suite bathrooms, a colour TV, air conditioning and free wi-fi which is not something you always get at 5 star hotels for some reason! There are no meals available but a light continental breakfast is available-this is very basic as per most Italian breakfast offerings outside of the larger hotels but pastries, tea/coffees and juices were offered and breakfast seemed to be included in most of the room rates. The owners, who are welcoming and friendly, actually encouraged us to take breakfast one morning even though we had missed serving times an were on our way out for the day which was a good service. They speak a little English but the night porter-although friendly-spoke next to no English so with our limited Italian checking out early on the last morning to catch a flight and having to pay the bill by card was a little tricky so perhaps best to sort out the check out and billing with the owners during the day. I will give this 3 stars as a small hotel establishment not directly comparable with a larger hotel-when we next visit Venice and plan to stay in Mestre we would consider staying here again as well as shopping around for other options in the area.

Basic no-nonsense hotel near St. Mark's Basilica…read more I have a few basic requirements for a hotel room in Venice: clean, comfortable, inexpensive and near St. Mark's Basilica. There is nothing like staying up late into the night listening to the dueling orchestra's in St. Mark's Square and then a 5 minute walk back to the hotel with a smile on your face. All of those requirements are met with Ca' del Dose. There are only 6 rooms in this tiny hotel and my party of 8 nearly rented out the entire place. You have to tell them when you're arriving at the hotel so they can meet you. After that you keep your keys and you can wander in and out of the hotel like it's your own private apartment. I love that feeling! Someone comes in some time during the day and cleans your room and refills the miniscule but surprisingly tasty breakfast. Someone is at the front desk during the morning and afternoon but other than that you have the tiny place to yourself. The rooms are all basic and some rooms even have a balcony. This is one of the easiest hotels to find in Venice. From St. Mark's Basilica walk towards the gondolas, turn left at the water, keep the water to your right, go over 4 bridges and then turn left at the next alley. The hotel is on your right. Ask if they give a discount for paying in cash.

Both the St. Mark's Square and Piazzale Roma are on walking distance, about 10-15 minutes depending on the crowd. The appartment is located on the grond floor on a quiet canal. You can see the gondola's floating by from the windows. And the watertaxi can come to the front door. Inside you'll find a master bedroom with a double bed, two one person bedrooms with a bed/sleeping couch and two bathrooms. Both with toilet, bidet and a shower and 3 towel's a person. There's a little kitchen with al the things you need and a relatively big patio. Everything is very, very luxerious and spotless clean. You'll think you're in a one of those magazines. Beautiful. And everything you'll think you can possible need is there. Paolo had a cold bottle of Prosecco in the fridge, there were tea bags and coffee cups, toast, butter and jam and even shampoo (skin friendly) and shower gel. You'll also find magazines to relax and the tourguides if you forgot one. Paolo picked us up from the airport (although we had a very late arrivel) and took the time to show us around the apartment and the neighbourhood, pointing out the bakery (open 365 days), the supermarket (normal hours) and a view restaurants. He even took us for a drink and insisted on paying. Tip: La Zucca should be fantastic. Only....you'll have to make reservations way in advance. Probably before you arrive. During our stay Paolo was available for tips and making arrangements like reservations. He even send us a sms to remind us to put the garbage out on time. Check-out was between 09.00 and 10.30 by Paolo's sister who also cleans the place. Like the late arrival, we had a late flight. And even that was no problem. We had to leave the apartment to give Paolo's sister a chance to get it ready for the next guests, but we could leave our luggage in the apartment and even use the toilet when we picked it up again. I think we paid around the €200 a night during eastern for a place where 4 people can sleep. Great value for money. And note that Paolo speaks excellent English which makes the conversation easy and entertaining.

Some of the fixtures weren't in great shape either--the room just felt a bit run down or neglected. It was also pretty noisy--though this may be the norm for Venice, since everyone's in such close quarters. Our room was right on a narrow side-street which echoed with people in the morning. We also happened to be located right off of the breakfast dining room too. Sleep would not have been possible without earplugs. We don't regret having stayed here and we seriously loved the location. The price was pretty reasonable too. It just didn't "wow" us.
