It's a giant…read moremaze and you never know where you will end up and it's always a really good cheese in the end. I had a lot of fun trying to find Residenza della Spada. Even before coming here, I googled map the place and in fact, it gave me pretty straightforward directions. Turn right, walk straight, and then turn left. However, reality wasn't so straightforward. I ended up walking in circles and at one point, I thought maybe this place is like Platform ¾ where I have to run through a wall to get to another worldly dimension. Anyway, as I finally came to my senses and my GPS finally knew where it was, I found the hidden alleyway that led to this place. So as my New Yorker instincts turned on, I should have known better not to walk down a shady alleyway. But this is Venice. These alleyways are the hidden gems. And they are actually litter free. Let me preface by saying that Residenza della Spada is not a hotel, it's more like an AirBnb but for some reason, Expedia called it a hotel. The owner lives here with his wife and kids, and has several vacant rooms for people to stay. He also operates a bar lounge on the ground level. It's rustic yet homey. Not sure about my husband, but I loved it. It makes you feel local. The owner is really nice. He made us breakfast spread every morning with awesomely fresh croissants and prosciutto. His cappuccino was excellent. As far as the room itself, the bed could be a little more comfortable but for a 2 night stay, I didn't really mind. However, the walls are pretty thin so you could hear your neighbors talking. Overall, I enjoyed the stay and wouldn't mind walking down the alleyway again.

She and her husband met us at the local vaporetto station to assist us with our luggage and help us find the apartment. We were welcomed with a lovely bottle of prosecco and some biscuits. The apartment itself is fabulously high tech and fun - from a chromotherapy shower (my kids have never been so happy to have a shower!) to a very secure, keyless door. Every detail has been thought of (I especially loved the beautiful quality sheets) and it is clear that Flavia and her family have poured their hearts into the apartment. The location is also great - in a more residential part of Venice but only 10mins away from San Marco. We loved it and would definitely stay there again.

Then they lied about it saying they could not cool one unit and heat others, as if I was unaware of what zone AC /heat means. Worse! Their 'fix' was open the window, which we had to do, allowing dozens of mosquitoes in that bit us head to toe. It was bad enough that we had to discuss medical options to assist with the swelling and itch on the face. Daily, the staff entered the room and cranked the heat ensuring our return was as uncomfortable as humanly possible. To end our trip the staff - call her L told me I could not utilize a toilet while I waited for Porter service. I was forced to roam Venice, looking for a toilet even though I had checked out of a hotel and my luggage was still there. If you want bugs, no heat or air, rude and lazy staff with no functioning wifi stay here. I would highly suggest most anywhere else!

I've described it to friends as a basic dorm style room with two beds, nightstands, armoire for hanging clothes, drawers, a desk, a chair and a private attached bathroom. The room was quite comfortable in size, plenty of room for my travel buddy and I to maneuver without any trouble. Reception is one flight up, easy to reach by a flight of stairs or elevator. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is also served on this floor in a large room. There is even a refrigerator if you end up with some tasty leftovers. Breakfast is included and was similar to most others we experienced. Sliced meat, cheese, sweet pastry, rolls and baguette for slicing and toasting, yogurt, cereal, and juice. There were two machines that made various coffee drinks. They also provided fresh fruit which was a nice treat. It may not have the charm of staying in a tiny room in a centuries old building for at least twice the price, but it allowed us to enjoy our visit to the utmost. My criteria when selecting lodging for myself and my travel buddy (Full sized - age 50 something) Clean 2 beds Ensuite bathroom A lift if our room was on a floor that took more than one flight of stairs to reach. Air-conditioning Breakfast included Easy to reach from train, metro or bus. Close to sights we wanted to see. Less than $150 US if at all possible.
