My schoolmate from 7th-12th grades was in town with his wife from Washington D.C. My work schedule has been hectic, so we were trying to find a time and place to meet for dinner. They were staying at a midtown hotel and I live in Inwood. They were open to restaurant suggestions, but when my friend said his wife wanted to see Washington Heights, I knew we were going to Cañave. I have been to about every bar/restaurant in Inwood and its immediate environs. There are many good places, but I tend to prefer places where the music is not overbearing, you are not jammed in like sardines in a can, and service is exceptionally good. To make a long story shorter, we arrived at 7:30 p.m. and left at 11:30 p.m.! We talked, ate, and drank the night away. I suggested the shrimp ceviche, and we split two orders of it. It was fabulous and a quintessential example of example of Latin Fusion. My friend ordered steak and his wife, at my suggestion, ordered the roasted chicken dish - which I seem to never recall the name of - and rice and beans, and I did the same. This dish has recently become my favorite in the neighborhood. In fact, it has become one of my all-time favorite dishes. The drinks were incredibly good, as I savored my favorite, the delicious coconut margaritas. To top it off, the homemade flan the best I have ever had. I would be remiss were I not to compliment the staff. They were extremely professional, attending to our every need and thoroughly explaining items on the menu (I had forgotten the ceviche part of the shrimp dish, which they immediately filled in!). The easy listening music is superb and encourages conversation. It was nonstop talking, laughing, eating and laughing. We talked about old classmates, teachers, the school, etc. We caught up on the gaps in the years that we had not seen each other. Stopped by last night with a friend to catch up, and I'm so glad we did. The place is super cute with great vibes all around. The service was excellent, and the staff was attentive from the moment we arrived. They offer happy hour until 7 PM on Fridays, which is a huge plus, with many drinks priced at just $8. We started with margaritas, which were really good. For food, we ordered chicken tacos, flautas, guacamole, and yuca fries. Everything was a 10 out of 10. The yuca fries were a bit different than expected but still so delicious, especially with the accompanying sauce. The guacamole was also incredibly fresh. Price wise, we caught part of the happy hour and each had two to three drinks along with the food mentioned above. Stopped in for a late lunch after helping a friend move in (who lives right around the corner) and were blown away by the food. The party I was with mainly ordered burgers, but the few of us who ordered something besides that all raved about the food. I used to live down the street from Canave and would literally go every week. Some days they would have a live band! The food never disappoints and the service is always great. My favorite restaurant on dyckman/uptown. This time I got the shrimp mofonguito with a side of rice and beans. The rice and beans are A MUST! I don't know how they get the rice so creamy but it's delicious! The chips are fresh so it's a great start to the meal. My favorite drink is the fuego y agua which is basically a mezcalita. Had a sunday girls dinner here and for it being my first time, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The ambiance is lovely , the staff is very welcoming and as for the service it was top notch. We started with drinks I had a nonalcoholic pina colada , which was perfect. Not to overly sweet and blended with the perfect amount of pineapple and coconut flavor! As for appetizers we had the fresh guacamole with chips and this was very good ! Next we ordered dinner . I had the bbq short rib tacos, we had a side of rice and beans and the mofonguito. Everything was very flavorful and fresh ! I loved that the staff made sure we were happy with our order and came to ask if we needed anything else. I had to take the meat out of the taco with my hand and chew around the fat chunks with my fingers. The drinks were good and the food, when it finally arrived, was actually good. However, service has much room for improvement. We waited for at least half an hour for our food. After inquiring about it, they finally said there was an issue in the kitchen and they had to re-make the dishes and supposedly that is why it was taking a while. Now I understand things but in an establishment with good service someone would have come told us that there was an issue and so it'll take a little longer and perhaps even offered us some free appetizers on the house. None of this happened and as a result we were a little frustrated. If they were to improve that then I'd be happy to come back here again. read more

My friend and I stumbled upon this place after visiting The Met Cloisters for a late lunch. He had the flautas, I had the tacos al pastor, and we split the nachos con queso (with sour cream, jalapeños, and pico de gallo on the side). The tacos were very tasty, and the nachos were amazing! I love that they use shredded cheese on the nachos instead of liquid cheese sauce. The place was really cute and the service was good! I would definitely come back. The margaritas were bland and the server seemed irritated that I insinuated as much. Also, the tipping scenario is terrible. They automatically add 20% (which is what I normally tip) then at the bottom it gives recommendations for an extra tip but the amount is calculated as a percentage of the ticket INCLUDING the mandatory tip. Why would anyone tip on top of the entire ticket--mandatory tip included--and not on the price of the meal itself? The mere suggestion is insulting. Also, if the server knows 20% will be automatically added regardless of the level of service they have no incentive to do well--as evidenced by my experience. read more

Welcoming staff at this beautiful restaurant serving Mexican dishes with interesting twists. I stopped by with my family on a Sunday afternoon around 4:30p and the place was understandably quiet. They have indoor as well as outdoor seating; get a comfy booth, if you can. They do have some beers, but you're coming here for their wine. Guacamole: solid. Perfectly balanced and very good. Pulpo y papas: delicious, easily the best dish we had. The octopus was tender and flavorful, and you won't resist drinking the juice left. Quesadillas: simple, yet yummy. Tacos de BBQ short ribs: the beef could have used more salt, but was very tender. The tacos were small, though, and I didn't find the combination of flavors particularly captivating. I'd probably order something else next time. Overall, it's a pleasant and relaxed place to spend a couple of hours. I was happy to have walked past this restaurant afyer a disappointing brunch with hubbs down the block. My burger was prepared well over so after hubby finished his meal and we were walking back to our car, we noticed Cañave and decided to give me an opportunity to enjoy a sit down meal for the day. We were initially worried because the dining area seems pretty tight but the staff was very helpful, facilitating a pathway and comfortable table that would accommodate our stroller. Our server was very pleasant and the manager kept stopping by, making sure that we were content with everything. We had both, their guacamole and quesadilla to start, which was OK. To be perfectly honest, the quesadilla could have used more oaxaca cheese and the guacamole could have been a larger serving for the price. I ordered a Fuego y Agua cocktail which was bomb, and their steak and eggs which was a bit scant. The price tag of everything seems a bit of a reach. I think they feel like their in an upcoming neighborhood and because the area code is 212, they can justify those prices. The amount of steak included in my $19 dish was laughable. The food tasted ok, nothing to write home about and certainly not warranting their prices but their in a great location so I guess you're paying for NYC adjacent? I gave four stars because they have some great drinks and the service was wonderful. I hope they do better with their portion size and pricing because 4 oz or less of skirt steak with some scrambled egg and fingerling taters is not worth 20 bucks. read more

I went here earlier today with my partner hoping to get a decent meal for dinner. The ambiance was nice as well as the music. The appetizers were generous in the portions that was given. My problem that I had was with the skirt steak that I ordered, I ordered the steak medium rare & received it well done. I'm not one to go back & forth about things like this all the time because I've had experiences where my food was violated because the chef didn't like that I sent it back. A well done steak isn't the end of the world though. The end of the world is getting a check with an automatic gratuity of 20% for a party of only 2. If there was a sign that would clearly state there is a automatic 20% gratuity I wouldn't have cared but it's a slap in the face for the residents of the neighborhood to be misled over a small dinner. Maybe a 20% gratuity would've been warranted if my steak was prepared properly. 10/10 wouldn't recommend. read more

We are so glad we found this little Mexican Latin gem near the Cloisters across from the Fort Tryon Park. The Cocktails were perfection and nicely presented. The food - especially the croquettes and momoquita were especially flavorful. My only disappointment would the the Tacos Al Pastor - although quite tasty they were a little skimpy on the pork.
