C-Quence would never condone any such action regardless of age, but here is where the reviewer got it totally wrong. There are absolutely 100% NO CHILDREN'S MMA CLASSES available at this gym! The owner and head instructor does not believe in children's MMA and there is no sparring of this type amongst children. I found out about Cquence by accident. A friend of mine wanted to join a gym. You know, typical New Year's resolution, and invited me to tag along to workout. I was a little bit hesitant because I belonged to LA Fitness, but hey, an extra workout never hurts. Not only that, she mentioned working out with kettlebells, which I had been wanting to try for a long time. First off, the place is a little intimidating. There are a lot of in shape guys and I overheard multiple stories of the previous week's championships that were won and everyone's medals, but I've had over 9, but I've had over 9 years of Tae Kwon Do training, but not in Jiu Jitsu. I didn't know if we were going to work out with the guys or what, but it turns out we were working out with Claudia's women's only fitness class. It started with a nice gradual warm-up, then progressed with body weight exercises and then we got into kettlebells. Since I was new to kettlebells, Claudia spent extra time with me, helping me with the basics. Those tips helped tremendously! For a fight club, never once did I feel awkward about the men staring at me during my workout. Even though the women's only class is right next to the competition fighter training area. Claudia also mentioned Bulgarian Bag training and invited me to join one of those workout sessions free of charge! All in all this is a great club that is women friendly to all aspects, from those that are interested in conditioning to fight competition. John is one talented teacher. There are a ton of talented jiu-jitsu practioners in the world, but that doesn't always translate into a great teacher. I am 6'8" and John has managed to teach to my strengths (he's probably 5'8'). He understands that some people are there simply to stay in shape, and there are also those who wish to train hard and compete. Whatever the reason, John certainly caters to all. As a student of the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and as the mother of the child you are referencing, my initial reaction to your "opinion" was not pleasant. However, unlike yourself, I have and exercise great respect for this art and for our Black Belt Instructor, whom we learn from and trust. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an art that provides a great example of discipline and respect to a nine year old child who has poured his heart and soul into that art and who YOU could learn a great deal from regarding respect. For you to question a black belt's integrity and authority in his art in front of his student that day, who gave his best and definitely EARNED that gold medal, says a great deal about your character and lack of respect for this art. As his mother and as a student who had to EARN her blue belt, I am more confident now in my black belt's discretion and integrity as a black belt knowing that he would not succumb to an individual's opinion who obviously has no knowledge about the art and definitely no personal experience in the art. Everyone has the ability to have an opinion. It's what you do with that opinion that shows who you truly are, and you chose to write publicly that a hardworking, respectful, and dedicated nine year old young man did not earn his Gold Medal................. PS-It will only be 3 years of experience this November 2011 (only 2 of which was in the official Gi. I have been training there for about 8 months and my son has been training there for almost 2 years and I absolutly love it. I was able to lose 20 lbs. within the first 4 months.
