I was referred by a friend and ordered the ITALIAN SUB. I can't complain about the quality of the ingredients or size but the actual prep of the sandwich was a big problem for me. The meat was sliced very thick (are they too lazy to slice it thin) and the roll was tough and chewy. By the time I was finished with half the sandwich, my jaw was too tired from chewing to finish the other half. One additional problem for me, a pet peeve, is rather than opening the roll all the way and layering on both sides the meat, cheese and everthing else all across the roll, all the meat and cheese are all put on one side of the roll and the vegies on top and then the rest of the roll is folded over everything. So, when bitten into, everything is separted in sections; all the meat and cheese is at the bottom (usually) and the vegies at the other end of the sandwich making the ratio mouth-feel unbalanced. I either got a blast of meat or a blast of lettuce and tomato. read more

Sadly, this place could be a gem. Unfortunately, if you don't know anyone working, you can't expect decent service. They are slow, quite rude (more than your typical Jersey chip on the shoulder), and don't really care if your food need has been fulfilled. I went there today because I was craving a turkey and provolone sub. I have been here many times over the years, but this was my last time. Don't get me wrong, everything was fresh. The problem was and is a total lack of meat on my sub. It was only 4 slices of low grade turkey breast and a couple of slices of provolone. I could barley see it on the roll under all the toppings. If I wanted a salad sub, I would have ordered one.The last time I went there, I thought it was just anomaly that there was so little roast beef on my sub. They are just very stingy on the meats. Nice Italian Deli. The House "Sub" (Italian hoagie) was really great! There is a bar to eat at. Many varieties of chips, and great tasting hoagies! I should have gotten their famous Sloppy Joe, but I didn't (I hate cole slaw). So I got a good 'ol turkey club. Not the best, but not bad either. I like how it was piled with lots of delicious tomatoes, but the bread could have been toasted more. They have their own "brand" of bottled sodas -- the diet root beer tastes just like Stewart's. The inside is kinda cool, kinda run down but clean, kinda like its completely unchanged from the 70s...or whenever. There's about 10 barstool seats along the counter if you want to eat there, but it looks like they do a decent amount of take-out for lunch. A lot of old timers are hanging out here during the day. I was in Mendham (where I grew up) in Oct. and started talking to 2 ladies in a cute little antique store and I decided to ask them where I could get a good sloppy joe (sorry folks I'm over the wicker basket). Both of the women's faces lit up, "oh C&J's in Madison; its the best SJ around" So, of course I HAD to go & I tromped myself all the way over to Madison. What a tip I received. Those 2 women are my SJ angels:) Haha. I've now had 4 SJ's from C&J's (2 in Oct and now 2 in Feb) and I have loved every single one of them! Not only are the staff some of the nicest people ever (they gave me free pastries because they just made a new batch and couldn't justify selling "old" pastries even though they were from the night before), the food is crazy. Plainly stated CJ's is the best! Best food, best atmosphere, best people, best price. CJ's is like the Cheers of luncheonettes. They are friendly, hospitable and thoroughly entertaining. I love the stories, pride of ownership and obviously the food. CJ's is great for lunch and equally as good for catering. There are lots of places that you can get sandwiches, but there are very few that you can get a great sloppy joe. CJ's nails it. Not only are the sandwiches huge, they are incredibly fresh and professionally assembled. It's an art and they've got it down just right. There's no denying that they are one of the best!
