He came out for the free estimate but then was super flaky about scheduling a time for our project. After a week or so he contacted us the night before to say he could come at 8am the next day. When we weren't able to make that happen we set up an appointment for 8am the following day. He texted the next day to say an emergency came up and we would have to reschedule. He then texted the morning of the cancelled appointment day to say he could come that afternoon. When that was not convenient for us he said it didn't seem like we were going to "gel" on this project and he would pass on it. Not sure why it was so difficult for him to schedule a firm time for our project. We were pretty flexible for weekdays and very flexible on time, just needed more than a few hours heads up.

Every time I scheduled an appointment for a technician to come and evaluate and fix the problem (one room will get too cold while another room will not get cool enough) I was told "Try this setting, should work better." One time a technician "topped off" the coolant in the outdoor unit because "it seemed a little low." The last time they came out to "fix" it and do an annual cleaning they charged me $500 and did next to nothing. I complained and they only lowered the price to $350, again after doing next to nothing besides cleaning the filters. I can't understand why they are unwilling to do what it takes to fix the problem but I can no longer trust them. Four years now and still not working right.

The work I was requesting was an exact match for a job pictured on their website in the gallery of photos and in the 'before and after' section. I had spoken to another company and received a verbal estimate prior to calling empire. I asked for an estimate for a well pressure tank replacement, and knew that includes the pressure switch and T "pack". Was told that there would be a $90 dollar "dispatch/estimate" fee and they could fit me in at the end of the week. I questioned why I needed to pay for an estimate when I knew the exact problem, and solution and offered to send pictures of the job. I also mentioned it was close to the same exact thing (job) shown on their website. The office person explained that every job is different and they, the technician/plumber, needed to put eyes on it for any quote and that costs the fee. I had also asked if I went ahead with the work, would the estimate fee be applied to the work, and I was shocked to hear the response of no.I thought it was strange but scheduled the visit, because I basically didn't have water and I already had one other quote. I was told the tech would be there between 730-830 on the day at the end of the week. I asked if they would call before arrival and was told yes. The following day, it didn't sit right with me that I was paying for an estimate when i knew exactly what I needed, so I called back to ask. I also asked if the tech would be bringing the parts (new tank) with him so he would come prepared in order to reduce the time spent if I went ahead with the work. Keep in mind, my house would have no water during the installation / tank replacement. I also asked what brand tank they use. The person that I spoke with was the same that booked my appointment, She said she would ask both questions and get back to me. she didn't call back the next day, so I gave it until the following day which was the day before the appointment. She said they couldn't waive the estimate fee but if I went with the work and since I was a new customer, they could try to do something. I woke up on the morning of the appointment, earlier than I normally do for work, had the area all cleaned and cleared the night prior and put my pets away close to their arrival time. I had gotten a text at 1 in the morning saying they were on their way? Time was ticking and 730 passed. I got a call from the office saying the tech was sent on an emergency call and so my appointment was bumped back to 10-12 arrival now, instead of the 730-830. So I immediately asked? I won't have to pay for the estimate, right? Being that my appointment got post-poned, I already knew the job, and that I had taken time off from work and had pets for this appointment that was made and confirmed early in the week. She agreed that if I went with them for the job, then they would ask the tech to waive the estimate fee. I got a text at 1053 saying 'on the way' and so I started getting ready again, for the 11-12 arrival. After 45 mins, still no arrival so I called the office. I figured that the text saying on the way, meant they were on the way, or close. I was told they were coming from previous job in Hudson. Okay fine but Hudson is 45 mins from where I live and it had been close to an hour since I got the text. Text was at 10:53 am saying on way. I called into office around 1135. They showed up at 12:17, 1 hour and 24 minutes after the "on the way" text AND late past the arrival window time for the 2nd time after the original postponement. The tech apologized and explained he worked the overnight shift the night before and explained why I got the "on the way" text the night before at 1 am. He had clicked the wrong job the night before. Okay fine. Mistakes happen. I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt and start fresh & positive. I explained symptoms and immediately said he didn't need to see it (examples or symptoms) that he would go to truck to write estimate. Came back a short time later with a fixed price. The price was high and wasn't based on hours of labor, and instead was a "fixed price" based on the job. Now that is exactly what I asked for over the phone and the office said they spoke to plumber, office manager, and owner and to tell me they can't do that. Strike 2 or 3 or 4... I had no water, I asked what tank brand they use and he said it varies they couldn't tell me. I had them do the work and it took many many hours, but not of work, of mostly waiting & standing around. They left and left me with 3 new problems. I pointed out the one I saw during the "checkout" and he said he didn't work there or touch that so it wasn't part of the work or responsibility and it absolutely 100% was. I wasted a day off from work and spent hard earned money and am unsatisfied. The next day, no hot water.

I posted another review about Josh's fantastic service for my boiler several months ago. When my…read moremini-splits stopped blowing cold air, I knew Josh would be the one to call. He fit me into his packed schedule (of course the units picked the first hot spell of the season to act up), diagnosed a refrigerant leak, and set about fixing it. If you're not familiar with mini-split systems, the difference between them and central air is that where central air cools air at the condenser unit then circulates it through your house, mini-splits circulate refrigerant, cooling the air at various "head units" throughout the house. The advantage is that mini-splits are easier and faster to retrofit into old buildings. The disadvantage is that there are many more places for a refrigerant leak to hide. Josh filled the system with UV dye and came back late in the evening to check for leaks. He found a couple of egregiously loose fittings---a sure sign of shoddy installation by the other company that had installed the system. At this point, he suspected there were probably loose fittings elsewhere. He's keenly aware of how expensive refrigerant is, and how bad it is for the environment when it leaks. With that in mind, along with the fact that the heat spell had broken, he suggested we hold off on refilling the system until he could come back and do a full system walkthrough. When he came back, he pressurized the system to its max with Nitrogen, so he could check for leaks without wasting refrigerant. It just so happened to be the hottest day of the year (so far), but that just made him more determined to get the system running for us. He worked thoroughly but quickly and got our system running better than I think it ever has. I'm profoundly grateful for his hard work and dedication. I cannot recommend him highly enough for any HVAC work you need done.

They seemed hardworking, responsive, and committed to getting the job done. He asked us several times to leave a positive review, and we said we would as soon as everything was fully installed and working correctly. Unfortunately, our experience deteriorated after the installation was finished. They only tested the system in fan mode after the installation. When we tried to run it, it would not run in heat or cool mode, and was displaying error codes. Devoe returned multiple times, replacing parts and ultimately concluding that the manufacturer was at fault and that the compressor needed replacement. They referred us to another HVAC company at our own expense, saying they did not have the tools to replace the compressor. The technician from the second company discovered that the equipment was fine, but the system was not working because Devoe's team had left the refrigerant service port closed after installation. Once corrected, the system operated without needing to replace the compressor. However, we then discovered a second problem: one of the units was leaking water down a bedroom wall. When I contacted Brian about the leak, his response was disappointing. He said, "Do I get a five-star review if I come fix it?" He also denied responsibility for the leak. When I said I could not promise a five-star review, he said he would not fix the leak, minimized how serious it was, and repeatedly asked for a five-star review. We had the second company come back, and their technician found two installation-related drainage problems causing the leak, which they corrected. We ended up paying $850 in total to the second contractor to fix issues related to the installation. Everyone makes mistakes, and I understand that troubleshooting complex equipment can be challenging. What concerns me most is not that problems occurred, but how they were handled. The combination of installation errors, refusal to take responsibility, and repeated pressure for a five-star review left us with little confidence in the company. As an addendum, I left this review on Google last week, and Brian replied; instead of apologizing or taking accountability, his reply focused on how we had previously said we would leave a positive review. He stated he could share photos of our installation (photos don't show the leak), reiterated that he is committed to high-quality work, said he doesn't like electric heat pumps, and then concluded, "But you go on your rant if that makes you happy at the end of the day." Brian has since taken down his reply, but I won't forget how he missed a chance to make things right.
