Oreo milkshake - the only size they have, massive. You know it's freshly made when it comes in one of these.

For some reason, since I've been hanging out with my American colleagues lately, we end up at more American places. Which I'm okay with, if they were all a bit more like this. Simple, good food, but with some veg options too. A chain burger place that I wouldn't have picked on my own, but I ended up being happy with it. The service was fairly good despite being in a group of six people. The decor is monochrome but entertaining. I was intrigued by the white walls covered in white shelves full of white dishes. They couldn't possibly use all these, right? The consensus among our group was that no, they're arranged too neatly and must be just for decoration. Then there are the little figurines of random animals hiding all over the place - shelves, lights, wherever. See how many you can find! For food, I got a salad that ended up being massive (oh right, American portions) and was amazingly tasty. I'm always pleasantly surprised when a veg option is good at a burger place, and they pulled it off! Everyone else seemed to enjoy their burgers, but it was insisted that the shakes were amazing. I wanted to try the banoffee dessert, but they were out, so I went for the Oreo milkshake. Yum! It was so huge, though, that I couldn't finish it all. I think I've gotten too used to European portions.

This is always my first stop in Oxford. This chain serves really really good burgers, no matter where you are in the UK you can go there ensured to go out full and happy. My favorite is the Byron but i'm a classicist, you can go crazier on their other more exotic recipes. Each month of so they offer a different recipe, last time i went, it was an Italian one (which living in Italy, i tend to avoid in the UK). I also like the interior and general atmosphere, quite beautiful. Also the waiters are always super nice and efficient. The one thing i did not like at all: desserts. At least the brownie was no good at all. So enjoy these good, decent burgers, nice fries all over the UK with confidence, they will not disappoint you.

Very glad this chain came to Oxford though it is perhaps unwisely located right next to Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

The veggie burger appeared and tasted like real beef. It's offered as a single or double where you can choose from different condiments such as garlic mayo, mango chutney, burger relish, curried mayo, chili sauce, or your standard mustard. It comes with a generous serving of chips (fries). For a veggie burger, it is surprisingly filling. This place made such an impression on Ryan S. and I that we came back a second time. I couldn't do another veggie burger but ordered the Greek Salad. Prices are a little higher than other places but they serve pretty big portions. Beers are solid. Have a seat out in the backyard if the weather is warm.

Five Guys - Cheeseburger and Fries

They were very nice when I ordered and the menu is the same as what I was used to. When I got to my room to eat, the burger looked exactly as I expected... until I began to look at it. The lettuce was just a single piece of sort of wilted iceberg lettuce. I'm not sure why they couldn't have included more and used fresher lettuce that was crispy and crunchy. I ordered my burger with jalapeno and I assumed since it was on the menu, they would put them on. I found one slice of jalapeno. And yet I had ordered it with no mushrooms and it was full of mushrooms. I realize mushrooms might be more common place over here, but I specifically asked for jalapenos. The beef also was a little less than desirable. I never thought there would be such a difference in beef, but it lacked the flavor I'm used to back in the states. And coming from Texas, the beef is fresh and certainly has a different taste to it. The burger was hot, fresh and looks amazing. But the taste was bland, the lettuce wilted and sparse and they seem to hold back on toppings (jalapeno). I also ordered fries which Five Guys is also very know for. They were cooked well, but taking ketchup was a bit of an ordeal. They have the traditional small paper cups for eating in. They also seem to have small plastic containers with lids but you have to ask for them and when you do, all I received was one and this was for a medium order of fries. I do not know whey they don't have them available to just use at will but if I have to ask, why not give me a few or even ask me how many I want? I was only able to get one slice of jalapeno and one plastic cup for ketchup. I'm not sure why this place is so restrictive. Back in the states, the burger would have been loaded with jalapenos and I would not have to ask for the plastic cups. If you are coming to Five Guys and you have never experienced it... I would just say this place is average and does not truly represent the type of meal or service you would receive at a Five Guys in the states. It was disappointing as I was really craving a bit of food from home and instead, received something less.

Staff at this store refused to allow a 3 year old boy and his 5 year old brother use the toilet…read morebefore I had bought something. Having explained 4 times to the staff that we were going to have lunch there, but having walked for 15 min from the Natural History Museum to the store, saying to the till staff we were coming back and just running to the loo; the manger came over and blocked us from proceeding! He explained I had to buy something before the boys could use the toilet. I said things were desperate and we needed to go now. My 3 year old was sobbing saying he needed the toilet. The manger refused to allow that. So we left and ran next door to the Wimpey who were very happy to accommodate. Even with very low expectations of the fast food industry what kind of person does that! What kind of firm employs those people. So having had a family tradition of every school holiday going to the museums in Oxford and getting a burger before getting the bus back to Woodstock, I will never ever ever set foot in a Five Guys again. Black listed! Well done mr manager! Employee of the month! I implore everyone who reads this to avoid this store at all costs and show them children are at least as important as profits!
