Offering your standard pub fare, vegetarian style, it served one of the best veggie burgers that I've ever had and I've had many from Boca to Morning Star. The veggie burger appeared and tasted like real beef. It's offered as a single or double where you can choose from different condiments such as garlic mayo, mango chutney, burger relish, curried mayo, chili sauce, or your standard mustard. It comes with a generous serving of chips (fries). For a veggie burger, it is surprisingly filling. This place made such an impression on Ryan S. and I that we came back a second time. I couldn't do another veggie burger but ordered the Greek Salad. Prices are a little higher than other places but they serve pretty big portions. Beers are solid. This was probably my wife and I's absolute worst experience at any restaurant ever. Before we arrived at this restaurant, we had bought some Jaffa Cakes from a local grocery store (we are from the United States, and I was very eager to try this British snack). After we sat down at our table, I pulled out a Jaffa Cake and ate it. I could see in the corner of my eye, our waiter (he was a tall male) throw his hands up as he was approaching our table. He then told me to put away the snack, which I politely did and apologized. Throughout our entire dinner experience after this occurrence, he only came to our table one more time to give us our food. Other waitresses had to serve and check on us. After my wife and I finished our meal, we waited about 15 minutes for our check. We could both see the same waiter serving other tables and hanging out at the bar talking to his co-workers, yet he never came back to our table. He even made eye contact with us a few times. After waiting so long, I finally decided to approach the bar and asked another employee if I could go ahead and pay our check. Our waiter was at the bar when I paid, and he refused to make eye contact with me as he continued talking to his co-workers. When I got back to our table, I booked our taxi back to our Airbnb. While we waited, I decided to take out my Jaffa Cakes and eat them, which FINALLY got the waiter's attention as he made eye contact with me from the bar. He shook his head and approached our table after ignoring us for most of our dinner experience, and he again told me to put it away. I was taking my time in finishing the Jaffa Cake I was eating, and he yelled at me saying, "Seriously? Put that away!" in front of other customers around our table. After I initially ate my Jaffa Cake when we first arrived to the restaurant, I never took it out again until I was fed up with our waiter's behavior -- which was very inappropriate. My wife and I never could get the waiter's attention to serve us until I took out the Jaffa Cakes again. I tried to be as polite as I could. I even said "thank you" to the waiter as me and my wife left the restaurant. I do not recommend eating at this restaurant to anyone. Our waiter's inappropriate behavior ruined our dinner experience and the rest of our night. Also, the food was only okay. My wife and I were very eager to try this restaurant as it is not always easy to find vegetarian/vegan restaurants in many places (my wife is vegan). read more

I honestly wish I could go eat at this place every night. If I wasn't just on vacation to the UK, I would definitely come back often. As a vegetarian it's hard to find restaurants that serve good, regular food that isn't trying too hard, and Gardeners Arms really achieves that nicely. The decor is beautiful and wonderfully eclectic, lots of dark wood and fun portraits. A bunch of different kinds of seating (stools, bar stools, couches, chairs) that both provide lots of options and also makes the place feel like home. The staff was friendly as well. I ordered the chilli dog with cheese and it was everything I've ever wanted in a vegetarian hot dog. SO delicious. And the chips were quite good too. (: I also had a glass of Chardonnay which was very yummy. Hope I get to come back here before my trip is over! This place is awesome - especially if you're vegan! There's plenty of vegan options and it makes hanging out at the bar a lot of fun. There's burgers, hot dogs, chili, chikn patties, etc. We were visiting Oxford and happened to come on the night they had a steampunk themed concert in the back which made the night way more interesting! The costumes were so creative. The downside about this place is there's no hostess - you seat yourself. So it gets crowded at the front while you compulsively loom over tables to sit down. While reminding the people who came in after you that you were there first. Drink selection is great as well as food - it did not disappoint! read more

There are, confusingly, two pubs of this name in Oxford, within 5 minutes' walk of each other. The one in North Parade is an old fashioned back street local. This is in a lovely old building, built of red and blue bricks. Inside, it has two spacious rooms with wooden flooring and wooden tables, and a small and very nice beer garden at the rear. They do real ales: on my visit these included Brakspear's 'Rye Smile' and 'Oxford Gold', Jennings' Bitter, and Ringwood's 'Seventy Eight'. The main event here, however, is the food menu of entirely vegan or vegetarian food. It gets rave reviews from veggies, and I'm only sorry we didn't have time to try it on my visit. So disappointed by my meal here, as I guess I had built it up to mythic proportions after reading reviews. The burger was incredibly chewy and literally doused in the mayo I chose. (I love condiments and I normally have to ask for extra - but in this case the normal portion was ridiculous.) The fries were a huge portion and tasted so so... The best thing was the service, as the guy who served me was v nice and friendly. I just felt a bit robbed for paying a fair amount for a burger which was almost wrong in every way. Hooray vegetarian/vegan food! Boo for the worst vegan burger I think I've experienced in my life. I had one of the burger wraps (because the idea boggled my mind) and the wrap bread was dry and slightly chewy, the vegetables within the wrap sparse but at least I had typical chips to keep me full. Despite an unsatisfactory meal, I'll be back- my friends' food (the mushroom pastry thing and the chili) looked MUCH more enticing than my food. I was so excited to find this 100% vegetarian pub that also serves vegan food. I entered right when it opened and the bartender was pleasant. I asked him for recommendations because everything looked great. He suggested the parcel. It was a spinach, olive and mozzarella puff pastry parcel served on a bed of lemon rice with balsamic and basil oil dressed rocket leaves for £9.95. I was sooo happy to take his recommendation. It was beautiful and delicious. One of the best meals I had in Oxford. I also had a hoegaarden Belgium wheat beer which was a blessing in Oxford and enjoyable on a hot day in their nice garden area. Gardeners Arms is the quintessential British pub, complete with pull-taps and room temperature Guiness. They were out of the curry when we arrived at about 7:30pm, which was a total bummer because others have highly recommended it. We did not try the vegetarian burger but have heard good things. It's made from scratch with fresh ingredients, which is unusual for a veggie burger. Unfortunately we couldn't say the same about the vegan burger, which is bought frozen. We both opted for the mushroom pie, which was absolutely fantastic. This is a great stop for vegetarian options, especially if you're looking for an authentic British experience (most other British food is heavy meat / dairy). read more

Go for the Chilli Hot Dog with Cheese, yummmmy :-) All the food is vegetarian or vegan, so really exciting to be able to choose from the whole menu for once! The veggie burgers are amazing, I especially love the wraps with garlic mayo, although it is a bit anti-social as they are not shy with the toppings and sauces! Even better in my opinion is the Chilli Hot Dog with Cheese... it's the best and something that is quite difficult to find at other restaurants, so a real treat. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE & BLAND FOOD - DO NOT GO. The owner and his wife grunt and do not talk to you or typically make eye contact when you arrive. The food is bland, uninspired, and overpriced and portions are small. The last time I went the bar tender did not know the prices of several of the liqueurs he had on tap, and he and the owner of the pub scowled at me and made me feel like I was asking something out of the ordinary when I asked the price. Recently, I went into charge my mobile phone because it was dead, and I was far from home. The owner initially refused to let me charge it there. Then, after begrudgingly agreeing with a threatening look on his face, as I waited on the other side of this empty pub for it to charge, he came over and told me to "Move on" (after my phone was 5% charged). This is a bad pub with awful customer service and bland food run by an unfriendly woman and an apparently bullying, intimidating, and hostile man. The only thing I will give it credit for is the decor, which they've made some effort in (though it may predate their ownership and management.) North Oxford deserves better than this pub. This was my neighborhood pub when I lived in Oxford, so perhaps I'm a a bit biased, but I absolutely loved it. It is, in my mind, the epitome of what an English Pub should be. The beer and food are both excellent; the crowd is mellow and just right; the ambiance is distinctly ad-hoc and home-made; the service is sweet and rude in exactly the right the right proportions. After a few visits they'll be treating you like family, and vice versa. The pleasures of the Gardener's Arms are subtle, and best appreciated over multiple visits. If you're just in town for a day, there are more spectacular pubs in Oxford -- The Turf, The Bear and so forth -- which you're probably better off visiting. With one important exception: if you're vegetarian, then the pub food here is the best in town (and it's not a bad town for that, either!). In particular, the veggie-burgers are so addictive that they ought to be made illegal. Since moving to London, I've made the pilgrimage back for those veggie burgers several times -- and they still treat me like family, as always. read more

This great pub is hidden down the appropriately-named Plantation Road. It's got several rooms, including a lovely back room with amazingly comfy leather sofas, a shaggy dog that makes friends with everyone who enters, and some nice tables outside. It serves a good variety of traditional ales as well as the usual variety of pub drinks. Food is served most evenings and is all vegetarian. This is an odd little pub tucked away in Jericho and offers only vegetarian food. This is very useful when entertaining vegetarian friends. Writing as a carnivore, I've found the food in this place to be very good and the beer is quite excellent. Some careful choices of larger and always at least one good real ale. I love this place! I came to The Gardner's Arms twice while visiting a friend in Oxford and thoroughly enjoyed (and stuffed) myself on both occasions. The veggie burgers are so good that I ordered a double patty both times and have no regrets. They've got this charred, smoky taste that I didn't think was possible without meat. It's small, so not great for big groups, but what big group wants to hit up an alternative veggy pub, anyway? Go with a few close veggies, and maybe a few carnivorous allies, grab a pint of Top Hat, and order anything on the menu. This is a fantastic restaurant. As a vegetarian, its so great to get free run of the menu. There are very few veggie restaurants in Oxford so it makes a change. The burgers are fantastic, as are the calzones. Apparently even people who like meat like them. They also have a nice selection of beers and a nice chilled quiet atmosphere. Really nice pub, out of the way and fairly small, but with a garden at the back. Fantastic Veggie and Vegan food which is so tasty it evens keeps the confirmed meat eaters happy (and pleasantly suprised!) Good range of drinks and reasonable prices.
