I had an Asparagus starter from the nightly specials list- nicely steamed asparagus stalks with a couple of dips. There was a Hollandaise that was good, but a Garlic Aoli that was amazing. Presentation in mini glazed Terra cotta pots was cute and appropriate to Spring. For my main, I had a Lamb burger with a side of a sweet potato fries. Burger, bun and additions made a great meal. But, the most interesting part of the meal was the mushroom 'ketchup'. Looks a bit like a super thick gravy, but really very good. No overwhelming mushroom flavor, just a very nice blend of all the spices and flavors. Would love to come back the next I visit the UK.

The menu varies with a more restricted menu available 3pm to 6pm, but even the restricted menu has soup, Camembert, burger, sausage and mash, rump steak and Caesar Salad. Prices range from about £4.50 to £6.00 for starters, and £9.75 to £19.50 for mains. There are some interesting Deli Boards to share: so we tried the charcuterie one with chorizo, salami, honey roast ham, rustic bread and chutneys for £8.75. For the mains we had Caesar salad, free-range roast chicken, crispy bacon & anchovies for £10.50 and 28 day dry-aged Aberdeenshire 10oz Porterhouse steak, fat chips, corn on the cob and béarnaise sauce for £19.50. The food was all well prepared and tasty, and the service was good too.

Or loathe it, I could have saved myself a few bucks. Well this time my intoxication levels were below zero, and we pipped for the olives and ciabatta, with olive oil and balsamic to set the mood, to start. When it came. The wait was respectable , and the food slid in front of us, with good and friendly service. Though I must interject at this point to mention that I am glad I am not epileptic. The lights whilst waiting were strobe like, as several kids parties called for some one out back to flip the restaurant light switches on and off at fiendishly rhythmic intervals. To add to this I may be in need of a hearing aid, as someone surely six miles away was in control of the volume dial to happy birthday. Back to the food, good atmosphere, if you don't mind a lot of children banter. Four olives, and mushroom stalks in olive oil, poor, cant say much more than that to be honest. Sad face apparent. Beer arrives, attentive staff, happy face again. Order mains. i opted for a steak sandwich, which on the whole was a bit gristle ridden, and was more on the medium side than the well done, but c'est la vie. To be honest for over ten pounds, I was saddened, especially as the fries although crispy, really lacked any flavor. Not understanding this, really for a chain that charges a decent amount for food that could be bettered by MacDonald at a fraction of the cost. Bathrooms were clean, could do with updating. Never again!!

Gourmet Burger Kitchen - Harry curling up at my feet during his first outing in a restaurant. Really impressed with GBK's policy on service dogs in training.

Never in my life did I think I would be giving a UK restaurant a five star review. Normally when I…read moretravel I am desperate to try new places and never visit the same restaurant twice. Perhaps its because the alternatives are drearily subpar or the fact that you can't ask for more than a good burger but I've now been to GBK twice in two days and am considering completing the hat trick tomorrow. The burger quality is very good and despite the burger not being large (by American standards) it comes on a nicely toasted bun with a load of toppings. The burger cannot be picked up and eaten without being cut. Now, a good burger alone would be tempting but the options are various and delicious. I had a Habanero burger on my first visit and the sauce had a very nice kick to it, unlike other places that weaken the burn this was full of it. My second visit saw the consumption of a Blue Cheese burger and while my aorta said no-no-no my stomach said yes-yes-yes. Highly recommend.

What I particularly enjoy about GBK is that they are happy to turn any burger vegetarian, meaning…read morethese guys have by far the biggest range for people like my partner and me. Furthermore, all their meat is ethically sourced (red tractor rather than soil association though), which means a vegetarian out of humane reasons can sink their teeth into a chicken burger here with minimal qualms. Their smoked chilli Mayo, green goddess sauce, bottomless ginger and lemongrass fizz and skinny friend add the delicious details to an already tasty meal. The restaurant itself is nice and clean with an intentional diner atmosphere. The service has always been excellent. Seating outside is pleasant and not too noisy with a lovely view of a water fountain. However usually that isn't quite enough to get five stars from me. Generally we'd be looking at enthusiastic four stars. But our last visit really added that final star of excellence in my mind: You see, I am currently training a service dog and part of what makes that particularly hard, is that it is almost impossible to find places that allow you to practice. The special scents and excitement of a burger place are hard to recreate at home. Restaurants will often allow you to sit outside, but if you are not rearing a winter hardy breed, that is unhelpful in winter. Thus, imagine my surprise and delight when I called ahead to Milton Keynes GBK and was informed that they kept a special table specifically for service dogs in training. It turned out to be right next to the door, making emergency dashes easier and keeping us out of the way of other patrons. The staff was exemplary and ever so kind. The cooks cooed, but refused to touch him as otherwise they would have to disinfect both themselves and the kitchen, which made me feel rather pleased about the strictness of their hygiene rules. All in all it was an amazing experience and we will definitely be back for some more practice (and delicious burgers). In my mind going that extra mile for their local disabled community most certainly makes them deserving of that fifth star!

I don't typically like chain restaurants, but at least this is not a huge international chain. I ordered the double bacon, medium, with fries. I was thrilled when the fries arrived: I didn't realize they were the shoestring type, which are my favorite. And they were nicely cooked; crispy on the outside, but still fleshy on the inside. Many placed overcook this type of french fry and you end up with just a crisp instead of a chip. The burger was good. After picking it up, I realized I could never bite it without making a huge mess, so I took one of the patties off to eat last. The burger had good flavor, but the patties were more medium well instead of medium: they advertise that medium will have a little pink, but mine had no pink at all. I was very glad I didn't order the medium well, or it may have been overdone. The bacon was nice and crispy, but still tender: I didn't have to worry about taking a bite and pulling the entire piece of bacon out of the sandwich because you can't bite through it. The cheddar cheese was an unexpectedly nice touch. Back in the US, our standard cheese for burgers is American...mostly because it melts so well. But American cheese doesn't have much flavor on its own. This cheddar looked more like a cheese sauce because it melted completely, but the sharp, dry taste of the cheese contrasted nicely to the sweetness of the bacon. The pickles were not quite dill but also not quite sweet pickles: they were somewhere in between. I almost asked for more just to give them a taste on their own because I enjoyed them so much. The staff were wonderful; both of the servers I interacted with were fun, informative, and very helpful. As a tip to those who travel around the UK: I noticed there were cards on every table with the Jack of Diamonds. When I asked why, the staff told me that each location has a different playing card. If you visit all the locations and collect a full deck, then you get treats from Byron. Apparently there have only been a couple of people to successfully complete the deck, but it would be an interesting challenge!
