UPDATE: Carlos called me personally to see how to win me over as a customer and we agreed to resume with the oil change with the already-paid amount. It is great to see a business owner with this much attention and care for customer satisfaction. Carlos can see the big picture. INITIAL REVIEW: I cannot speak for Carlos (shop owner) but his interim shop manager Miguel is a difficult individual to work with. I brought my 2010 Honda Civic because my car had shown 15% oil life just 15 days after I got an Oil Change outside. I asked Miguel to inspect my car and give me an answer for what happened. We agreed on the typical $120/hour rate to have it inspected. I get a call 1/2 hour later saying they couldn't find any leakage or damaged gaskets under the car but DID NOT GIVE ME AN EXPLANATION FOR WHERE THE OIL WENT besides "it was consumed". I hadn't driven the car any more unreasonably or left it out of sight. Miguel gave me 2 options of either getting an oil change with them ($65) + reduce inspection cost or charge me $60 for basically not telling me what happened to my oil... I tried to reason for something in the middle but Miguel wasn't willing to listen and eventually lost a customer. Too expensive for a ATF change. Overall my car wasn't able to reach my house. I called and told them why wasn't my car drivable. Since I did go into the shop with my car working and sadly leaving the shop with my car not working at all a red light. I had to push my car out the way of traffic. Frustrating!! Mechanic said that all they did was diagnose my car and checked my ATF level. I was charged $156 for the diagnose and they didn't even tell me what exactly was wrong since I been having transmission problems. They basically said I needed a ATF change and if that doesn't work I would need a whole new transmission...... after research I bought a diagnosis scanner and I scanned my car and the only problem was is that I need a new speed sensor..... lol $156 to the trash. Btw they were charging me around $680 for the ATF change and overall total of $800.Unbelievable!!! Sorry for the bad review but I wasn't satisfied with BYOC read more

I wanted to wait a couple of days before I wrote a review to make sure my AC was fixed and not just temporarily working. Back Story: 2014 Subaru Impreza Hatch base model I took my car into Subaru in San Jose off Capitol with an AC issue. When on it would randomly blow hot air, and when off it would randomly blow cold air. Long story short, I had to go back to Subaru twice to "fix" this issue. On the final visit, they assured me it wasn't my compressor and they fixed the problem. On my drive home, I experienced the same problem I was having to begin with. By this point, I was pretty frustrated and had wasted a bunch of my time for nothing. I took my car to get a quote at a local body shop. They quoted me the cost to fix. Low and behold it was my compressor, however, their charges were so erroneous I had to get a second opinion. I Yelped different auto shops and reached out to Eric at BYOC. I send him an email outlining my problem, frustration, as well as sending all the document of past work from Subaru along with the new quote. He was compassionate and understanding. Not only was the price he gave me about $600 less than the other place, but he also fixed my problem in only 4 hours of drop off. Super happy, my AC now blows cold air when on and stays off when off. We paid for another service center's diagnostic service ($200) to find the source of our car's oil leak and were informed that additional costly service (1500.00) would be required to finish finding the source of the leak. When we asked about the potential cost of the repair, we were told that we could not be given such an estimate without first paying for the additional service to finish finding the source of the problem. After that disappointing experience, we brought our car to BYOC to find the source of the leak and correct the problem. The service advisor at BYOC reviewed the report from the other service center and used it to prepare a thorough estimate of what the repair would cost us in the worst case. We decided to go ahead with the leak inspection. BYOC found the leaks quickly and completed the repairs for significantly less than the worst-case estimated price and even less than what the other service center was going to charge to find the leak without repairing it (less than 900 total price of diagnostic and repair at BYOC). Owner is responsive and answers our questions/checks on us via text. This review has been written several weeks after our experience, and our car is still running well, not leaking. We have verified this by putting cardboard under neath the car and it is still dry. We are completely satisfied. To boot, we dropped in, got our car repaired in a day! read more

The local Toyota dealership wanted $2495.00 for the timing belt replacement alone (that's for one belt and labor). I knew the dealership was going to be a rip off but I decided to call them first to benchmark a price. So hence - never take your vehicle to the, "Stealership". After making several phone calls in the north part of San Jose and Milpitas, I was recommended to contact Milpitas Garage. Thank you Carlos! Very informative and excellent customer service - no wonder he has several awards and recognitions on his shop wall. He didn't try to up sell me on their services nor scare me on this preventative maintenance schedule. Here's the facts: Timing belt replacement with water pump, tune-up, and labor = $783.00 This includes all the other belts: alternator and fan. Air filter not included because I'm running on K&N. Total time of completion: Two days. This leaves enough time for Milpitas Garage to shop for the OEM parts, make the repairs, and test your vehicle. I dropped my vehicle off on a Monday evening and it was ready by Tuesday after work. Clean up and attention to detail: This is a plus for me. Since Carlos had several areas of the engine apart, he was able to recommend a few change outs like the temperature sensor. This is a good sign that he's a trust worthy mechanic. Unlike some auto shops where they re-use or ignore parts in hopes it would fail for a return visit and an unexpected cost on the vehicle owner. Why four stars? During a surprise visit, I noticed they removed the air from my front tires. This condition could potentially deform the shape of my tires and add stress to my rims. I asked why this was done. According to the shop, a lowered vehicle it makes it easier for the mechanic to work on the engine. I have to disagree. I have already recommended them to my family for future timing belt PM's. Just remind them - do not remove the air from your front tires. Vehicle Facts: Read your vehicle's preventative maintenance schedule for timing belt replacement. This can be found in the vehicle's manual. You can also contact your local dealership for information. In my case, Toyota 4Runner is scheduled at 90,000 miles. 4Runners do not have a chain timing belt. It is rubber with strands of fiberglass. Some auto shops I contacted thought I had a chain belt. Have the water pump and temperature sensor replaced at the same time. This is a must because these parts work together with your timing belt. If an auto shop says differently - stop and take your vehicle to Milpitas Garage. Is it important to have your timing belt replaced? Yes. If the belt breaks, you're vehicle stops. Its better to spend money now for the preventative maintenance rather than later - towing and unexpected repair costs are expensive. In addition, your safety and responsibility comes first. read more

BYOC is amazing! I came here before when it was still Milpitas Garage. Their prices were always reasonable and service was top notch. And Eric taking over as BYOC has been no different. If anything, the service has somehow even gotten better! I came in for an inspection and was given a very thorough breakdown of what needed to be worked on/why and what needed to be prioritized since I couldn't afford all the repairs at once. When I came back to pick up my car, not only were the repairs done, Eric and his team also went above and beyond and fixed some items that I deemed too superficial to bother with as a kind gesture. I have gone almost 2 years without being able to open my driver side door all the way and having to suck in my gut every time I needed to get inside, so the fact that they took the time to fix it has really improved my quality of life. I am very impressed with "Milpitas Garage"!!! I was in Milpitas last week and my truck died on me, as the alternator stopped charging my battery and I lost all power. I called AAA and had them tow it to "Milpitas Garage", which I discovered on yelp of course! Carlos (the Owner) is the MAN! Like many other reviewers wrote, there is something very likable about him. He just seems very knowledgeable, yet very humble. He immediately recognized the fact that I was from out of town and he told me not to worry that they would get my truck taken care of that day, even though they seemed very busy with other vehicles. So with a dead battery in my truck, no iPhone wall charger, and a dead iPhone (probably due to yelping too much), I was sort of stuck with several hours to kill and no iPhone.... OMG, what to do??? Carlos recommended a Mexican Restaurant next door, but I had already had my sights on Koong's which was about a mile + away. I told Carlos' worker (younger guy with the dog behind the counter, didn't catch his name), that my iPhone was dead and I really wanted to go eat lunch a little ways away. So I told the Dog-Guy that I would like to walk over to the other side of the Railroad tracks which involves crossing at 237. He told me there was a pedestrian walkway, and get this.....he gave me his personal cell phone, so I could go, and so in case they needed to call me while I was away they could get a hold of me! AWESOME FOLKS!!! They did need to call me so it was a good thing I had his cell. Later after lunch I returned, hung out at the nearby Milpitas Library for another hour or so. TIP - If you don't have a Library card here, you can purchase a temporary 2 hour card to use their computers for $4. This is what I did, since I was hours without an iPhone/Internet and I had so much time to kill...haha! I had to take the car back b/c the toyota part failed. The part is covered under warranty, n/p there. However b/c there was a (get this) 30k discrepancy in mileage they charged me labor. That's right folks I typed thirty-THOUSAND! Ok, so 1st, it's my 68y.o. mom's car. And there is NO WAY that she drove 30-THOUSAND miles in 5 months. That's right, this part failed after 5 months (again it's covered). That's not my beef. What is, is, I was charged labor. Now if this is warranty work they should bill Toyota, not *me*. In addition they were going to charge me another labor charge to test it. I declined as I could do that myself, so when I went to pick-up the car I asked to check it, and Carlos acted as if we (me 48, my mom 68, and my 5y.o. son) were going to steal the car! He RAN out after my mom (3 knee replacements and can barely walk) to make sure she wasn't going to drive off. Which would not have mattered, as I was STILL THERE waiting to pay. Carlos, you must have a lot of business, b/c the way you treated me, you certainly do NOT need mine. I'm going to stick with Alvin's, and I suggest you do too. At least they wouldn't charge labor if it was WARRANTY work! Nor act like you're going to steal your own car! read more

My truck decided to give up on me on my way home from work on Friday night. Not knowing an auto mechanic to call and who's open on a Saturday was a problem but of course I had to Yelp it out. I came across Milpitas Garage who was just a couple miles from where my truck was. I called and spoke to Carlos just to make sure they were open. Carlos was quite friendly and told me to bring my truck over, he even recommended me to a towing company as well. I got my truck towed to Milpitas Garage and had Carlos assess the situation. I had a bad alternator! He quoted me a really fair, if not awesome rate on the parts and labor. But then I also told him to check my rear axle, which the tow truck guy pointed out there was something leaking. Carlos knew exactly what was going on, explained it to me and quoted me for that. Feast or famine on car repair I tell you but, the cost for the axle was quite decent too so I just had him take care of it. Since it was Saturday I told Carlos no rush as I have another car and will just check back on Monday. Fast forward a few days, as there was an issue with my axle and they had to order a special tool for the job. I got dropped off to the shop on Wednesday and Carlos shows me all the parts that were removed, which I thought was awesome. The final cost was just a few dollars more than the estimate because of the extra part, no biggie. Carlos also explained the the work will be guaranteed for 12-months...whoa, that's the first time in my life I've ever had an auto shop tell me that! On another note, my bank card was compromised earlier that day so I was going to pay by check...old school I know. Carlos doesn't take checks...and I don't blame him. I explained that I need to go to the bank to get my temporary card to pay him. Without going into detail, he made arrangements to get me to my bank to resolve the issue and back. His gesture of such generosity won my business hands down! For the record, he takes all major credit cards, ATM/debit cards and cash. Carlos provided such an honest job and such stellar service that when I was leaving, I subconsciously said, "See you again soon!" Hopefully not TOO soon! :) read more

This used to be Sam's Autocare and when Sam retired, he sold his business to Carlos. I started going to Sam's Autocare back in the 80s, when my dad used to take his cars there, so when Sam introduced me to Carlos a few years ago, I stayed with the business! I knew Sam was careful in making sure the new owner would be a great mechanic, truthful, and have reasonable prices as he did. Carlos has fixed my 2000 SUV thru out the years whether it's something big or small, he never disappoints. I even take my car there for oil changes! I hate those quick oil change businesses where they try to tack on extra service "your car needs!" Yeah sure uh huh! As a female, I'm not afraid that Carlos will try to screw me over with extra service I really don't need. My parents live a few hours away, but will bring their SUV out to Milpitas for Carlos to fix when needed. That's how much we like and trust him! I usually get prices that range from $12-15. $20 maximum. But he wanted to charge me $55! Must be smoking crack bro cause those are crack prices. Called Carlos to get a quote on battery issue I was experiencing. I drove to him within 10-15 minutes of our call. He took a look and knew it was just battery, nothing else, as there was no dashboard error signs showing when I jump start the car. His colleague diagnosed my issue and found the battery was pumping little to no energy to the systems and thus, prompted a quick battery replacement!
