Update: Its been over a year since they installed these doors and i have to lower the stars. There were many issues that came up after what i thought was a great install. The doors are beautiful and well done i have to give them credit for the custom job. However the follow up was not great. I kept getting the run around and they promised to fix it many times and never came out and after 1 week of calls and text they stopped responding and just ignored me. First of all, the doors were super heavy, and they never installed them with a footing into the concrete. They bolted them to the stucco wall, without factoring, how heavy these doors were. After a couple of weeks due to the weight, these doors began to sag as when they bolted them to the wall they didn't even ensure that they were drilling into wood to hold the weight. And when they were installing one of the doors, they drilled so deep it went into my sons bedroom and made a hole in the drywall which I complained about and they said they would fix, but never came out to do it. I had to pay another $1000 to get somebody else here to correct their install; create a footing, replace the hinges for commercial ones, since the ones they installed, were very flimsy, considering the weight and adjust the doors to account for the weight. Like I said, the doors are beautiful but their install and follow up is bad. They are really nice people, but I would not have them install any project because if something goes bad, they will give you the round around. read more

Miguel and his son run a first-class business. After being scammed by a previous contractor who took my money and split, Miguel came out, measured and provided an estimate within a few days. During the entire project Miguel stayed in contact with updates and questions to ensure I was completely satisfied. Juanita, who runs the office is on top of things and makes sure all deadlines are met. She was great and super helpful. Their new CNC machine makes some of the strongest, attractive, custom gates I have ever seen with an average of 10 days turn around. That is unheard of! I highly recommend By Design Ornamentals. I have been chasing him to finish the job as well as provide me with the manual of the lock that I bought and he ghosted me completely. I seriously regret contacting this company. 2nd week of September 2020, I met with Miguel I informed him that I need to have my current single entry gate replaced with a double entry gate. I told him that I'll be having pool construction begin the 1st week of November so I'll need the double gate installed before then so the tractor will have the ability to enter and exit my backyard. He had 2 months to get this accomplished and said "no problem, it'll be done in 2 weeks". He measured the gate, so I paid him half upfront and the check was promptly cashed the next day. After that??? Nothing. A couple weeks go bye before I finally hear from him. He shows up to measure the gate (again) then leaves and says he needs to come back tomorrow to measure with a laser level. Almost a week goes bye before he finally comes back to measure (for the 3rd time). Following that, I get the "I'll install tomorrow" text from him over and over again. He finally shows up a few days before Halloween for the install...after canceling on me a few times (no call/no show). The day he shows up he didn't install the gate...instead, he told me he'll install the posts. No posts were installed...instead he measured a 4th time then left! He told me just before leaving that he would install everything on Halloween. Halloween comes and he goes dark...doesn't answer his phone or return texts, just silence. I finally hear from him on November 4th. All he says is "an emergency came up...I'll install tomorrow". Tomorrow comes...and guess what? He flakes out again! At this point I have literally less than a day to get my gate installed (the pool excavation is scheduled for the next day). I send the guys texts, call his cell phone, call his business phone, no answer, no response. The next day the pool guys show up but cannot get into my backyard. I had to then scramble and take down the old gate/fence myself in order to ensure my pool project goes on without delay. The good news is the pool guys can now get in my backyard to do their job, the bad news is I have no gate for my backyard at all anymore (hopefully my dogs don't run away). Here we are, almost a week later and the guy still hasn't responded to me. He literally took my money and then never provided the service I paid for...if that isn't fraud, I don't know what is. I have never had a more difficult experience working with any company like I have with this one. They caused so much undue stress for absolutely no reason. This is a family-run small business (mom, pop, and son) that specializes in many metalworking and metal fabrication. They have experience in: 1. Wrought-iron fence and railing fabrication 2. Metal signs 3. House numbers (~$10), cutouts (see metal turkey picture), trivets (~$20) 4. Repair and maintenance of fences and railings - they also work with multiple HOAs. Here is how I found them... Having previously replaced my kitchen sink as a DIY, my parents asked me to help them install a new sink. However, they purchased one that was too big for the cutout in their granite countertop, which is smaller than the standard size. I could not find online any sinks that were the right size with only 1 basin and at least 2 holes. So, we had 2 solutions - cut the granite (which several contractors warned us could crack) or cut the rails on the bottom of the drop-in sink. I called By Design and spoke to Juanita, who was super helpful and asked me to bring in the sink. They quoted me $90 for removing 2 of the rails, which took about an hour to complete. They did a great job and even polished the edges so that no one would cut their hand along any rough edges. After I took the sink home, I realized that because the cutout was curved around the edges, the sink still did not fit! I called Juanita again. So on a Friday night around 6PM, Juanita and her husband Miguel stayed late to wait for me to drive in with the sink so that an extra 1/2 inch could be cut off on a 3rd rail. I cannot say enough great things about By Design and the wonderful people who work there. They have a real pride in their craftsmanship and stand by their work. This couple Juanita and Miguel are very nice people when you meet them and when you speak to them. They will follow up with you initially a couple of times and then they will go MIA. After we paid them $3000 for our fence we had then had to chase them down text them multiple times and email them multiple times and leave multiple voice messages and they do not communicate in return. After several occasions of me reaching out to them and letting them know that we're going to have a problem if they don't return my phone calls and my text messages and communicate that we would probably end up having a very serious problem I heard from Miguel and I was told multiple lies. At first we were told that they were in a car accident and that Juanita was on a vacation and then when he got to my house then he changed his story and said that he was just shorthanded at his location in Mexico. He had also told my husband that he was in a car accident but then he mentioned nothing about a car accident when he was physically here installing the fence.He came on a Monday Tuesday and Wednesday and on Wednesday he told me that evening it was about three or 4 PM that he would be back in the morning on a Thursday the very next Thursday and he did not return and since then we have not heard anything from him and nor has the person that had helped him on the fence heard from him either. We are now at Day 17. Still no calls no text messages no voicemails not even on social media no emails nothing. Initially I was very concerned perhaps something could've happened to them you just never know maybe they're sick maybe their car broke down maybe someone passed away you just never know...so I take all that into consideration. Miguel had even left all his tools in my backyard all of them they're still here. however today, I looked up their license number and low and behold the state of California does not have that license number that is listed on the receipt that was given to me so I'm not really sure what to think about it at this point I'm not very happy, about the communication, I'm not happy about that the quality of the work at all. I'm so disappointed because I think that Miguel and Juanita are very nice people but friendly does not mean that they're going to do a great job when it comes to being a business. read more

If you are looking for a reliable, professional, customer service-oriented contractor to do some home improvements, look elsewhere! We have experienced nothing but delays and let downs since contacting this company for an estimate back in December 2020. We were advised it would be some time before the crew could do the demo and install of a partial 45' x 2' tall retaining wall in our backyard, which we were fine with because it wasn't a "rush" order, but were told that it would be a 2-day job, once it began (one for demo and one for install). After Miguel came out on December 28th, we constantly had to follow-up on his promises to deliver, which were never on time and always came with an excuse (red flags from day 1). Fast-forward through many follow-ups and on March 13th we finally had demo day! Unfortunately we hit a snag when the root of the old tree we'd previously removed was impeding the wall line and needed to be cut back before install; the job couldn't be finished that weekend. We were told Miguel's guys would be back that week to chainsaw the tree root, deliver and stage our product for a March 20th installation; we subsequently confirmed the date twice. Well, by Wednesday, March 17th, we hadn't gotten one word from Miguel, nor had he or his guys shown up to finish prep work, and he was not responsive to our calls or texts. He finally responded on March 17th saying he'd be by "tomorrow" (Thursday) with the materials and that we were scheduled for Saturday (March 20) installation. Needless to say, Thursday's drop-off day, as well as Saturday's install day, came and went with no word/no show again. When we finally got a hold of him the following week (March 24), he apologized and said he was sick. Fine. He got his guys out to cut back the chainsaw and delivered our materials that same day, now saying his crew could be to our house for install "by Wednesday" (March 31). All of this to say when the project began mid-March we told Miguel it needed to be completed before March 27th as we had a family gathering that weekend; initially this was not a problem for him he said. Alas, that Wednesday ALSO came and went with no call and no show from Miguel or his crew. The last date-stamped photo I've attached was taken on April 12, 2021, which is how our wall was left for a month by Miguel's crew. As I write this review on April 22, 2021, we have since hired another company to finish the work that this one could not, or would not (and in 2-days with half the crew, by the way). Miguel has completely stopped responding to any communication we attempted and went absolutely radio silent (to-date we have not heard a word since our "March 31st" install date). He's had plenty of opportunity to rectify the situation; I even held off on writing this in hopes he would. But instead he chose to ghost us at each and every opportunity. Do yourself a favor, read the reviews on this page and steer clear. Maybe it wasn't a job he wanted, or needed, but we were treated absolutely poorly and I wish I'd have come here first to know what we were getting ourselves into. read more

If I could give no star it would be more accurate. This business treated us like crap. In the beginning things were fine, but the lack of communication and integrity is overwhelming. It took 8 weeks to get our gates installed, 8! We paid our deposit on 8/27, gates were installed 10/21. Today I got a call from Juanita demanding final payment when I still have not received and email with invoice. She sent me original invoice for the deposit through email and I paid it through Zelle the same day. With the second call today I had enough and I decided to file a BBB complaint. It seems it's hard for them to admit they are in the wrong. From not coming to install and having to reschedule multiple times. For how we feel we got treated differently then our neighbors, because how Miguel put it, I thought you were gringos and offered to give us a better price when they came to measure the first time. So I guess they thought they could get away with not following the time line they gave us. Not sure. It's pretty upsetting. Hopefully the gates pass inspection and I can be done with this company. This is the main reason I filed the bbb complaint Incase it doesn't. I can actually go on but won't. I am looking into a consumer discrimination claim. As far as the gates go they look nice, weren't measured right so they had to add this bar to the bottom. So yeah so disappointed I didn't go elsewhere. On 10/17 when the gates were suppose to be installed, Miguel showed up with the gates and stated the installer canceled on him. Told my husband, that they will get installed tomorrow, if not the gates would be free. My husband asked him to record it since it was the second time they rescheduled. Miguel would not but it's on my security cameras. We are not and never tried to get out of paying. But the lies these people told are too much to be from a licensed contractor. We sent them a picture of a door we liked, they designed it and sent us the mock up, we approved it, and soon after we received pictures of the door. This door is a beast!! The security door is strong, it opens and closes quietly, and it looks absolutely beautiful on our home. We were also able to pick the color of the powder coating to match our home. They were very professional and very nice when they visited our home each time. Miguel initially showed some serious promise when I hired him to install a metal fence in Palm Springs, but on day two of the project, he shoved a bill in my face doubling what he agreed to work for and despite my agreeing to double his pay (and pay for all the materials), his steam ran out on day 4. He then became completely unresponsive leaving me with an unfinished fence. He yelled at me and was very unprofessional. Because of his unfinished work, I incurred several thousand dollars worth of wind damage so I had to hire another contractor to come out and fix it all -- costing me thousands more dollars! Unfortunately, Miguel is a sweet-talker so he'll make you think you made a good decision to hire him, but he'll quickly turn on you and demand up front payment before anythings even close to being finished. He also lied to me and said the motor mount was 2' deep when it was only 6" deep so I had to have it demolished and re-poured by someone that didn't cut corners. By Design Ornamentals came highly recommended by a local supplier, but my experience was far from ideal and from what I've read since, I'm not alone in feeling this way. Please keep in mind that if you are hiring him for custom metal work, he overcharges and gets most of what he 'makes' in Mexico for a fraction of the price by his 'bro'. He frequently abandons projects and cherry picks the most profitable jobs, so don't be surprised if when he starts excusing himself or simply goes cold-fish on you -- you won't be able to reach him, Juanita, or Miguel Jr. -- Disappointing and unprofessional. read more

My house experiences heavy winds and it broke my gate to the point where I couldn't close it nor move it. The wind bent the latches, ripped the bolts off and broke the hinges. After contacting many fence/gate companies this one was the only one to call me back and offer same day repair. They were all very professional, kind, and nice and worked fast. I sent them pictures, they quoted me over the phone and stuck to the quote and added extra reinforcement on the gate. The only negative was that my gate broke right before Christmas but at least my dogs can use the backyard again. I recommend them for gate or fence repair. read more
