Provençale Moules Frites (bottom) and Hanger Steak (top)
Stephen L.

Solid authentic Belgian food in a lively and fun environment. This place is known for their classic Moules Frites (which is basically just a bucket of mussels), so I had to order it - I got the Provençale Moules Frites ($34) which had some tomato, garlic, and basil in there. It was good but really nothing that special - just mussels with a bit of seasoning. I suppose the price is okay though considering the amount of mussels (2 lb bucket). They also come with fries on the side which were standard quality. I also tried the Hanger Steak, which was cooked to a nice medium and pretty tender. There was just the right amount of salt on there too. Not a very big portion size though for $34. The string beans and mashed potatoes that came with the steak were decent. For dessert, I got the BXL Waffle ($14), which was a satisfying end to the meal, as the waffle itself was drizzled with chocolate sauce and came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. They have a wide variety of beers and drinks, but I opted for a pear cider, which was actually delicious - very light and fruit if you are into that kind of drink. The inside of the restaurant has a cool atmosphere, with a bunch of blinking lights along the ceiling, upbeat music playing, TVs by the bar area showing European sports, and a chill European kind of vibe. It was actually somewhat empty on a Saturday night so no issues whatsoever getting a table. The staff are friendly, albeit a bit too attentive with checking up on us. There was a little mishap though, as our waitress accidentally threw away half of our mussels that we were sharing, thinking that they were empty shells. Thankfully, she handled the situation with grace and promptly asked the kitchen to prepare more mussels for us. Overall, I would give the food here 3.5 stars, but the environment boosts the rating up a bit to a solid 4 stars. If you are interested in trying some authentic Belgian cuisine with a fun atmosphere, then I would recommend BXL Zoute.

11/30/23: When you decide to visit a spot from an IG post. Worth it. From warmly greeted to amazing food and drinks this was one of the best last minute decisions. From the IG real I wanted that beef stew and fries. Folks it did not disappoint. What I envisioned came to fruition. OMG the dessert please ask for the dessert menu. The Belgium waffle with ice cream and whipped cream, you will thank me Great experience I would definitely return. Suggest reservations. It was as busy on Thursday night. Lively bar scene. Food , drinks Staff vibes A+ all around.

Early this week I had lunch here as I was craving for moules frites. BXL Zoute opened ten years ago and has become a neighborhood spot. There was a prix fixe which I skipped for the 2 pound kettle of mussels with endives and cream. The endives had been sliced thin. The mussels were ample but I was disappointed with the fries as they were ordinary ones. I far prefer shoestring fries which are tastier. For dessert I ordered the light and crispy Gauffre BXL (waffle) with a side of whipped cream but was given the one with the added berries Gauffre de Liège. Both were the same price of $13. Service here was friendly and quick. Quite a few regular customers dropped in to have beer on tap or a glass of wine. The atmosphere is convivial. The interior of this restaurant is quite large with flowers dotted here and there. Outdoor seating is in a covered area in front of the restaurant.

I came here on a Sunday evening with a party of 7. They have a AYCE mussel pot, comes with one order of fries, and a small beer, for $35! The AYCE mussel allows you to select any type of the 7 mussel flavor pots they have. Your first order is 2lb and each subsequent order is 1lb per order. It is worth noting that this AYCE is for Sunday and Mondays only. Conveniently we had 7 people and there were 7 diff flavor pot, so we did a "speed tasting" of all the flavors with each other. Afterwards, we each ordered our own mussel pot with the one we liked the best. My favorite two pots were the Grand-Mère (cream, bacon, onion), and the Provençale (tomato, garlic, basil). I liked the mussel pots for the most part. I loved the idea of the AYCE. The fries unfortunately were very salty. Luckily it wasn't the main star of the meal. Ambience was average. It was rather quiet when we went on a Sunday Evening. I think there 1-2 more other tables. Service was average too. They would check in once every so often. I'd come back here with friends who fancy the AYCE belgian mussels!

Every major city in the US needs more Belgian restaurants. Luckily, NYC has a few and both BXL Cafe (in Times Square) and BXL Zoute (in Flatiron) are great choices to fill your frites/moules/steak/amazing beer craving. We walked in just around 7:00 on a Saturday night after while wandering around Flatiron. The soft lighting and exposed brick walls added a charming atmosphere; the menu featuring classic Belgian dishes. We split an order of bitterballen (ragout filled fritters with spicy mustard) to start: each of those tiny balls were tasty and satisfying. Her filet mignon with garlicky green beans and truffle fries was incredibly flavourful and tender, while my carbonade flamande (chunks of beef in a rich beer based stew) chased away the bitter cold. A dense Liege waffle topped with whipped cream and berries marked a great end to the meal. The beer list isn't to be missed, though service was fairly relaxed.

Enjoyed a great bottle of wine, steak frites, and a delicious Caesar with my BFF after visiting galleries in Chelsea. The ambience was mellow, the music perfect, the bartender friendly yet unobtrusive. Other diners came and went; we were pleased that no one tried to hurry us out. A lovely, lovely place.

This place is unfortunately a bit small but there are tables to sit down in front plus a touch screen menu to order if you don't feel like interacting with the staff. There's also the option to get sauces which is a must if you crave something to mix those fries in. I think I waited about 10 or so minutes after placing my order and my Belgium Frites were ready. I ordered the Truffle Frites. They are drizzled with Truffle Oil and garnished with freshly grated Italian Parmesan Cheese & Savory Herbs. I also got The Roasted Garlic Aioli which consisted of crispy roasted garlic, simmering onion & spices with a touch of anchovy. A very dangerous combo but I promise you; it's delicious. My first reaction was seeing that the person who put my fries in a paper cone. He filled the entire cone and then filled partly a second paper cone and layered it on top so it did not spill. Amazing! I was in shock of how much fries you get for just the regular size. The Truffle Frites were pretty much what you'd expect. Hot to the touch and the bite, it's crispy on the exterior a slight soft chew when you take a bite. It's really hard to complain when you get fries made to order and it's exactly how you want it to be. Did I even mention that they are also open till late too? This might be a fever dream if this was near me. Unfortunately, I'm a bit too far from NYC to visit this place often. But when I'm in the area; this is a must visit for sure!

The fries were great but some crusty French bread would have been a good addition, to help soak up the flavorful broth. The Merguez sandwich was a miss. Despite the menu stating that it was served on a baguette (and picture on Yelp of other diners receiving the sandwich on a baguette), ours was served on ciabatta. Really, not the same thing. We did not say anything at the time but we would not have ordered it had we known. Total disappointment. Also, the person on our party that ordered this sandwich found the fries way too salty. Luckily, the attentive staff kept the water refills flowing. I doubt we would return to this restaurant in the future the next time we're in the area, despite the friendly and attentive service.

Wow, how have I not reviewed one of my favorite go-to spots in NYC yet!!??…read more I have been going to BXL Cafe since the mid-2000's and make a point of hitting it every single visit to the city. The first time, we stumbled into it during a snowstorm, seeking shelter after visiting Time Square with a group of friends, one of whom was in the city with us for his very last trip on this earth. He was very sadly dying of cancer and dreamed of being able to go to NYC one last time. May he be resting in peace. On my last night in the city, I suggested to clients of mine that we hit BXL Cafe and they were all willing and ready. Like every other visit, the service, drinks and food were all fantastic so I'm surprised by some of the 3-star reviews because this place is fantastic. This was a Thursday night and the place was absolutely mobbed. It was a bit of a squeeze getting to the table I reserved in the back where I joined my clients/friends of many years. Our server was awesome, very attentive, friendly, and put up with us trying to hook up our one single buddy at the table that night. She suggested we start with the croquettes and even though I had been raving about the mussels, some in our party ordered other things. No clue why! The mussels are always amazing. My clients/friends did enjoy what they ordered. The croquettes were very tasty; I believe my favorite was the ham croquettes. I didn't quite care for the shrimp croquettes, I mean, if I had to pick in the future. My go-to has always been the Thailandaise Mussels with coconut milk, lemon grass and curry. This has always been so awesome, I never stray from it. Sooooo good and a massive portion in a big 'ol black pot served with crusty bread and a big portion of fries. I guess my only complaint would be that while the fries are good and crispy, they aren't the traditional double fried in duck fat fries of true Belgian Moules Frites eateries. My favorite in this true Belgian way is the fries served at Wurstkuche in L.A. (of all places). These fries are absolutely heavenly and I'd suggest BXL (and The Back Abbey in Claremont, CA) set up a conference call with Wurstkuche so they can perfect theirs. Still, BXL Cafe is an absolutely wonderful stop and well, the beer on tap and by the bottle is always fantastic and fresh. Long live BXL Cafe! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

You could taste the beer in the beef stew but it wasn't too overpowering. Felt almost like a goulash. I was hoping for something with a bit more seasoning but overall, it was ok. The dish came with frites too which I was excited to try. They were crispy yet soft on the inside. I like my fries a little more skinny and crispy but these went well with the beef gravy on the side. Overall, the evening was pleasant but the food wasn't the best Belgian I've had, about a 3/5 for me. Just so so. Also, as a side note - They really need to work on their bathroom situation. There are 2 other Buvettes in Asia and one coming soon in London. Buvette does not do reservations. Buvette is a charming but tiny/cramped space, made more tiny within the last year by NYC's removal of pandemic-era street patios which greatly helped dining capacity. Buvette may sometimes have a few front sidewalk tables, and there's a tiny outdoor patio in the back. The tables and dishware are also tiny. There's a kitchen in the back, but some food is also prepared below the bar in front, where there seem to be some ovens. The food seems reliably consistent here. The menu is short but there are daily specials. I ordered a non-alcoholic ginger soda, crab tartine (a special), lobster a l'Americaine (lobster pot pie) and frites. The soda is always on the menu and is refreshing, with a nice snap of ginger. The crab tartine was fab, a fresh crab salad with avocado atop toast. The lobster pot pie was made in the under-bar oven, a small serving of lobster and veggies with a golden puff pastry topper. Delish. The frites were nicely crisp, served with an aioli. Winter Restaurant Week Review 1/6:…read more I went back to this popular Alsatian spot for Winter Restaurant Week a few days ago with a group, having gone there once before for Summer Restaurant Week, as per the previous review, and once otherwise to share a few plates during one of my usual group dinners. Compared to many other French spots, it is a bit more reasonably priced, at $45 instead of $60, and with no listed add-ons. The service was friendly enough, but we had a surprisingly quick meal for a French place, so I guess this Alsatian meal was more German than French, since we were in and out in around an hour. In terms of the daily offerings, as the menu online lists daily specials for the appetizer and main, the Soup Du Jour was vichyssoise, and the main was an Alsatian fish dish with green pesto and other things, which sounded unique, but I was in the mood for duck. I didn't bother with wine, though someone else had a glass, and for food, most of us stuck with the same dishes, except, I believe, someone got the trout instead of the choucroute. They gave us some crusty bread to begin with, which was warm and tasty. Most of us went with the Pétatou Gratine to start, consisting of a warm potato and Vermont goat cheese gratin, olive Niçoise, basil pesto, and a bouquet of mixed greens. The warm gratin was mildly salty taste with a mild goat cheese funk. and was pleasant. The olive and basil added some freshness. This was good, and a few of us used the remaining bread to soak up the remaining pesto. My main dish was the Choucroute De Canard with duck confit, duck sausage, steamed potatoes, Riesling braised sauerkraut, and natural duck jus. This version of Choucroute garnie was quite different from last year's offering, being entirely duck-focused, as per the word canard, rather than a mix of pork products. The sausage was mild, with a light snap and a pretty juicy interior. The best part was the confit, which was nicely crispy on the outside and very tender inside. The sauerkraut, as last year, is slightly sweeter than the typical German variety, as it is braised in Riesling and contains some juniper berries, which weren't the most pleasant to bite into. As last year, I was not a fan of the potatoes, as they were undercooked and still slightly hard. In general, I preferred it this year, as the duck was better than anything in last year's version, even if the dish was a bit less filling overall. For dessert, we all chose the Alsatian Brioche Mandiat with caramelized banana, coconut sorbet, and crème Anglaise. This was the highlight of the meal and was also a pastry I'd never had before. The laminated pastry dough had a light crisp and plenty of banana inside, with the sorbet being sweet but not too much. I expected the dish overall to be a bit too sweet from the combination, but thankfully it wasn't, as the buttery brioche presumably helped balance it. This was excellent, and I wouldn't mind buying a larger version for a party or something. If they charged $60 again, I probably would have reduced my rating to 4, especially given the service feeling a bit too rushed, even for my taste. However, at $45, I would still recommend them.
